    Using KWL (Know Want Learn) Reading Strategy to Teach Reading Comprehension: A Case in One Public Senior High School in Palembang

    KWL reading strategy is one of the strategies to improve the ability of comprehending reading text, especially expository texts. The study was conducted to find out whether or not there was a significant difference in the students’ reading achievement in comprehending expository texts between the students who were taught by using KWL Reading Strategy and those who were not. It used one of the quasi-experimental designs--pretest-posttest non-equivalent control group design. There were 79 students of SMA N 4 Palembang participating in this study. In selecting the sample, purposive sampling technique was used. The data were gathered through the use of reading comprehension test. T-test analyses namely paired sample t-test and independent sample test were applied to examine the hypotheses. The results of t-test revealed that there was significant improvement in students’ reading comprehension after the intervention. KWL reading strategies helped students to comprehend the expository text and gave a positive influence to the students’ improvement. Furthermore, teachers could apply this strategy as a variation in teaching reading in his/her class to avoid students’ boredom

    Students’ English Proficiency: The Case of One Madrasah in Jambi City

    This present study aimed to find out the senior high school students’ English proficiency. The study employed descriptive quantitative design. It took place at Madrasah Aliyah Labor Kota Jambi. There were 104 students of Madrasah Aliyah Labor purposefully selected in the study. The data were collected through English proficiency test for basic users namely Key English Test (KET). Descriptive statistics was employed to analyze the data. The result of this study revealed that four students (3.8%) were categorized as beginners (level A1) while the rest (96.2%) were not included in the entry level of Common European of Reference for Languages (CEFR) as their scores were lower than those of the beginner level. Moreover, based on the result of reading and writing test in KET analyzed by using the criteria used at school, the students scored low in both sessions

    Instructional Media and English: Using Macromedia Flash to Teach EFL Writing

    The objectives of this study were to find out whether or not (1) Macromedia Flash enhanced students’ writing competence, and (2) there was significant difference between the students taught by using Macromedia Flash and those who were not. This study employed quasi experimental design, pretest and posttest nonequivalent groups. There were 39 students of one of junior high schools in Jambi participating in this study. They were grouped in two different classes. The experimental group consisted of 20 students while the other 19 students were in control group. The data were collected by using writing test. Students’ paragraphs writing scores in pretest and posttest were analyzed through the use of paired sample and independent sample t-test statistical analysis. The findings showed that first, based on the result of paired sample t-test, there was significant improvement of the students’ writing competence after the intervention. Second, with regard to the result of independent sample t test, there was significant difference of students’ writing competence in experimental group and control group

    PENGARUH TINGKAT PENGGUNAAN EM4 (Effective Microorganisms-4) PADA FERMENTASI LIMBAH PADAT BIOETANOL TERHADAP KANDUNGAN PROTEIN DAN SERAT KASAR

    Upaya penggunaan bahan bakar nabati atau yang sering disebut bioetanol sebagai pengganti bahan bakar minyak fosil sedang ditingkatkan. Selain lebih ramah lingkungan, mampu diproduksi secara terus menerus, juga bahan yang digunakan untuk membuat bioetanol sangat banyak terdapat di alam termasuk bermacammacam limbah. Salah satu bahan baku pembuatan bioetanol yang sudah banyak digunakan adalah singkong. Proses pembuatan bioetanol menghasilkan limbah baik padat ataupun cair. Keberadaan limbah padat bioetanol biasanya dimanfaatkan untuk pakan ternak. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kandungan protein dan menurunkan serat kasar limbah padat bioetanol sehingga bisa dijadikan pakan yang lebih baik untuk pertumbuhan hewan ternak. Limbah bioetanol difermentasi dengan EM4 (Effective Microorganisms 4). Rancangan yang digunakan adalah rancangan acak lengkap pada faktorial 5 x 2 dengan 5 kali pengulangan. Faktor pertama adalah perlakuan EM-4, yaitu A=0%, B=0.25%, C=0.5%, D=0.75%, dan E=1%. Masing-masing unit percobaan menggunakan 250 g sampel limbah. Faktor kedua adalah lamanya fermentasi yaitu selama 4 hari dan 8 hari.Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa perlakuan terbaik yaitu penambahan EM-4 sebanyak 1% yang difermentasi selama 4 hari adalah yang terbaik, dengan kandungan protein 3.53% dan kandungan serat kasar 13.19%

    This study examines EFL Learners' Self-Efficacy in Public Speaking Class while enrolled in online classes. The researchers conducted quantitative survey research. The study was carried out in September 2022, and data was gathered through the use of a questionnaire. Paradewari's (2017) research was used to create the questionnaire. The survey included 70 students from the English Education Study Program at Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin State Islamic University in Jambi. The questionnaire is a closed questionnaire with 20 questions that will be used to collect data more efficiently. The study's findings indicate that students have high self-efficacy after completing public speaking classes, and they are comfortable speaking in front of large groups of people. Furthermore, self-efficacy affects not only public speaking courses but also other courses

    EFL Students’ Needs and Achievement: A Study at an Islamic University in Jambi

    This study aims to respond the regulation of teaching and learning English in higher education. Since there is no clear regulation of what supposed to be taught, some institutions decide different requirement for the teaching and learning English. This study focused on analyzing and evaluating the students’ actual needs in learning English. A quantitative study was conducted toward 113 non-English department students who have taken English subject in an Islamic University in Jambi. This study explored both of the students’ actual needs and experiences of their learning English in the classroom. The results indicate that having the four skills as a part of teaching and learning English in the classroom is important for the students. The students also mentioned that completing their study is not the only reason to learn English. They believe that learning English is a golden key to be a part of world class community.  In spite of mastering reading as the main focus of learning process, the students still face difficulties in understanding the ideas in English since they have limited vocabulary and grammar. They also stated that it is hard for them to get the meaning of what they read because they do not know how the sentences are put together.  As the results, it is suggested that the process of teaching and learning English must be revisite

    THE EFFECT OF PROBLEM BASED LEARNING TECHNIQUE ON STUDENTS’ SPEAKING SKILL AT STATE JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL 22 JAMBI

    This research was aims to found the significant effect and differences of Problem Based Learning technique on students’ Speaking Skill. The researcher was conducted on students of classes VIII A as experimental class and VIII B as control class at State Junior High School 22 Jambi. It can be seen in paired and independent sample T-test. The result of average students’ speaking skill score from the same group who taught by using Problem Based Learning technique got score 0.000 which can be seen from criteria of hypothesis if the score lower than 0.05 it means Ha is accepted. So, it can definite that there is significant effect of Problem Based Learning technique on students’ speaking skill. Meanwhile, the result of independent sample t-test showed that the Mean of differences was 13.800 and the significant 2-tailed ≤ 0.05 (0.000 ≤ 0.05). so, the researcher can conclude that Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. It’s mean that there is significant differences of PBL in control and experimental class on students’ speaking skill at State Junior High School 22 Jambi

    The purpose of this study was to elaguratethe implementation of the Merdeka Belajar Curriculum by English teachers in class X SMK Negeri 1 Jambi city. The approach used in this research is a qualitative approach using case studies. in the process of collecting data the author uses observation, interviews, and documentation. The subjects of this study were three English teachers, and the students who had implemented the Merdeka Belajar Curriculum , as well as the Principal of SMK Negeri 1 Jambi City. The findings of this study indicate that the implementation of the Merdeka Belajar Curriculum by English teachers in class X SMK Negeri 1 Jambi is good from the lesson plan aspect. This is based on the finding during of observations in the classroom, were in was found that the learning module was good

    The aims of this study were 1) to describe the types of subject-verb agreement error on students’ writing, 2) To find out the most error of subject-verb agreement on students’ writing at the third grade of Islamic Senior High School Nurul Iman Jambi City. This research was descriptive qualitative research, while the technique of collecting data was documentation and analyzed with Surface Strategy Taxonomy. This research revealed that 1) students’ did all types of subject verb agreement errors, 2) the most type of errors in subject verb agreement was misformation with the accuracy 21 errors. Based on the findings of this research, researcher recommended to the teacher to added and combined learning strategy effectively and creatively especially in writing paragraph
