    Relationships of Mental Disorders and Weight Status in the Korean Adult Population

    The purpose of this study was to evaluate the associations between weight status and mental disorders, including depressive disorder, anxiety disorder and alcohol use disorder. A total of nationally representative 6,510 subjects aged 18-64 yr was interviewed in face-to-face household survey. Response rate was 81.7%. Mental disorders were diagnosed using the Korean version of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (K-CIDI). The subjects reported their heights and weights. After adjusting for age and gender, the lifetime diagnosis of depressive disorder had a significant association with only the underweight group (odds ratio [OR], 1.68, 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.19-2.38). The association between underweight and depressive disorder was the strongest for subjects with a high education level (OR, 1.75, 95% CI, 1.2-2.56), subjects with a married/cohabiting status (OR, 1.94, 95% CI, 1.17-3.22) and smokers (OR, 2.58, 95% CI, 1.33-4.98). There was no significant association between obesity and depressive disorder in Korea. But there was a significant association between the underweight group and depressive disorder. The relationship between obesity and mental disorder in a Korean population was different from that in a Western population. These results suggest that the differences of traditional cultures and races might have an important effect on the associations between the weight status and mental disorders

    The same neuron may play different functional roles in the neural circuits to which it belongs. For example, neurons in the Tritonia pedal ganglia may participate in variable phases of the swim motor rhythms [1]. While such neuronal functional variability is likely to play a major role the delivery of the functionality of neural systems, it is difficult to study it in most nervous systems. We work on the pyloric rhythm network of the crustacean stomatogastric ganglion (STG) [2]. Typically network models of the STG treat neurons of the same functional type as a single model neuron (e.g. PD neurons), assuming the same conductance parameters for these neurons and implying their synchronous firing [3, 4]. However, simultaneous recording of PD neurons shows differences between the timings of spikes of these neurons. This may indicate functional variability of these neurons. Here we modelled separately the two PD neurons of the STG in a multi-neuron model of the pyloric network. Our neuron models comply with known correlations between conductance parameters of ionic currents. Our results reproduce the experimental finding of increasing spike time distance between spikes originating from the two model PD neurons during their synchronised burst phase. The PD neuron with the larger calcium conductance generates its spikes before the other PD neuron. Larger potassium conductance values in the follower neuron imply longer delays between spikes, see Fig. 17.Neuromodulators change the conductance parameters of neurons and maintain the ratios of these parameters [5]. Our results show that such changes may shift the individual contribution of two PD neurons to the PD-phase of the pyloric rhythm altering their functionality within this rhythm. Our work paves the way towards an accessible experimental and computational framework for the analysis of the mechanisms and impact of functional variability of neurons within the neural circuits to which they belong

    Radioactive effluents released from Korean nuclear power plants and the resulting radiation doses to members of the public

    Korean nuclear power plants (NPPs) periodically evaluate the radioactive gaseous and liquid effluents released from power reactors to protect the public from radiation exposure. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the release of radioactive effluents from Korean NPPs and the effects on the annual radiation doses to the public. The amounts of radioactive effluents released to the environment and the resulting radiation doses to members of the public living around NPPs were analyzed for the years 2011–2015 using the Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co., Ltd's annual summary reports of the assessment of radiological impact on the environment. The results show that tritium was the primary contributor to the activity in both gaseous and liquid effluents. The averages of effective doses to the public were approximately on the order of 10−3 mSv or 10−2 mSv. Therefore, even though Korean NPPs discharged some radioactive materials into the environment, all effluents were within the regulatory safety limits and the resulting doses were much less than the dose limits

    Pulmonary Metastasizing Low-Grade Endometrial Stromal Sarcoma: Case Report and Review of Diagnostic Pitfalls

    Pulmonary manifestations of benign metastasizing leiomyoma (BML) usually include multiple well-defined, round, bilateral nodules. Low-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma (LG-ESS) is a rare uterine tumor. A 70-year-old woman visited the clinic complaining of acute cough and dyspnea in April 2017. Chest computed tomography (CT) revealed pneumothorax and multiple pulmonary nodules. She had a history of hysterectomy for uterine leiomyoma 23 years ago. Biopsy revealed that the pulmonary masses were consistent with BML. However, the patient had two subsequent episodes of acute, recurrent respiratory distress, accompanied by massive pleural effusions and hydropneumothorax over the next two years. A chest CT performed for acute dyspnea revealed large and multiple hydropneumothoraces. The size and distribution of pulmonary masses were aggravated along with cystic changes and bilateral pleural effusions. Given this aggressive feature, additional immunohistochemical findings and gynecologic pathologist review confirmed the correct diagnosis to be LG-ESS. After initiating anti-estrogen therapy, the patient achieved a partial response, without recurrence of symptoms, for 28 months. Metastatic LG-ESS responds well to anti-hormonal therapy. If the clinical pattern of a disease is different than expected, the possibility of a correction in the diagnosis should be considered

    Preparation and Characterization of Pazopanib Hydrochloride-Loaded Four-Component Self-Nanoemulsifying Drug Delivery Systems Preconcentrate for Enhanced Solubility and Dissolution

    The aim of this study was to develop a four-component self-nanoemulsifying drug delivery system (FCS) to enhance the solubility and dissolution of pazopanib hydrochloride (PZH). In the solubility test, PZH showed a highly pH-dependent solubility (pH 1.2 > water >> pH 4.0 and pH 6.8) and was solubilized at 70 °C in the order Kollisolv PG (5.38%, w/w) > Kolliphor RH40 (0.49%) > Capmul MCM C10 (0.21%) and Capmul MCM C8 (0.19%), selected as the solubilizer, the surfactant, and the oils, respectively. In the characterization of the three-component SNEDDS (TCS) containing Kolliphor RH40/Capmul MCM C10, the particle size of dispersion was very small (95% at 120 min) at four different pHs with 1% polysorbate 80, whereas the raw PZH and Kollisolv PG solution showed a pH-dependent poor dissolution rate (about 40% at 120 min), specifically at pH 6.8 with 1% polysorbate 80. In conclusion, PZH-loaded FCS in this work demonstrated enhanced solubility and a consistent dissolution rate regardless of medium pH

    Effects of the Surface Roughness on Optical Properties of CdS Thin Films

    The effects of surface roughness on the optical properties of CdS thin film was investigated using RMS roughness measurements. CdS thin films for a window layer of the CdTe thin film solar cell were grown on ITO glass by a chemical bath deposition method with varying thiourea (CS(NH2)2) mole concentration. The surface roughness of the CdS thin film was measured by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). After obtaining the correlation factor between the RMS roughness and the difference in the diffused transmittance and the spectral transmittance by using the integrating sphere, we investigated the effect of surface morphology on the transmittance in all CdS thin films. It is obtained that the higher RMS value the specimen has, the more difference between the diffused transmittance and the spectral transmittance is measured.     Fast and low-temperature reduction of graphene oxide films using ammonia plasma

    Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) has been produced using an ammonia (NH3) plasma reduction method. Simultaneous nitrogen doping during the reduction process enabled a rapid and low-temperature restoration of the electrical properties of the rGO. The chemical, structural, and electrical properties of the rGO films were analyzed using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and conductivity measurements. The oxygen functional groups were efficiently removed, and simultaneous nitrogen doping (6%) was carried out. In addition, the surface of the rGO film was flattened. Consequently, the rGO films exhibited electrical properties comparable to those prepared via other reduction methods
