Munich (pp. 36-38) The report outlines the outcome of scientific monitoring of the educational and continuing educational counselling centre in Munich with regard to the effectiveness of counselling in the field of continuing education. Results prove the high contentment level among those seeking advice even after a longer time interval. Looking back, the respondents were still motivated to actively take their education in hand; some participate in further education.Für Bildungsinteressierte stellt die Unübersichtlichkeit des Bildungsmarkts -insbesondere des Weiterbildungsangebots- eine große Herausforderung dar.

(DIPF/Orig.)The authors of the present article explore the question of what kinds of biographical and life phase-related aspects have an effect on older people’s interests in learning and education after they finish gainful employment and what the consequences are for adult education. To this end, they rely on data from the current research project “Competencies in Later Life” (CiLL), which is being carried out by a research association consisting of the German Institute for Adult Education and the Ludwig Maximilian University Munich. The authors describe, among others, five groups of older learners in connection with their life situations and media use. The CiLL project aims at expanding the sample for the national PIAAC survey in Germany to include adults between the ages of 65 and 80. This should help to survey competence profiles of adults beyond the normal age of employment and to discuss them against the backdrop of socio-demographic and educational science categories. For the effectiveness and efficiency of continuing education offerings for older people to increase in the future, they will have to be better suited to the target groups and be designed to motivate the learners. The purpose of this study was to investigate the ultrastructure of the membrana limitans interna (internal limiting membrane, ILM) and to evaluate alterations to the retinal cell layers after membrane peeling with vital dyes. Twenty-five patients (25 eyes) who underwent macular hole surgery were included, whereby 12 indocyanine green (ICG)- and 13 brilliant blue G (BBG)-stained ILM were analyzed using light, transmission electron and scanning electron microscopy. Retinal cell fragments on the ILM were identified in both groups using immunohistochemistry. Comparing ICG- and BBG-stained membranes, larger cellular fragments were observed at a higher frequency in the BBG group. Thereby, the findings indicate that ICG permits an enhanced separation of the ILM from the underlying retina with less mechanical destruction. A possible explanation might be seen in the known photosensitivity of ICG, which induces a stiffening and shrinkage of the ILM but also generates retinal toxic metabolite

This study intends to describe the alimentary habits of the Curitiba citizens older than 17 years old, belonging to the social classes A, B and C (Critério Brasil), to identify segmentation patterns starting from characteristic psicografics and behaviory. A cross sectional descriptive conclusive research was accomplished with a sample of 280 interviews. Using frequencies analyses to identify the main victuals consumed in each meal, standing out the differences among the behavior in the days of week and weekends. The adoption of the multivaried procedures, cluster analysis and variance analysis, allowed to identify three groups of consumers withdifferent alimentary habits: "the gluttons", that eat everything without any special care with the feeding; "the unworried" ones, that eats sandwiches during lunch time, consume beverages alcoholics and smokes more than the members of the other groups and "the healthy" ones, that prefers salads and grilled meats and is more worried about the health. Key Words: Consume habits; alimentation; Curitiba citizens. We aimed to compare the effectiveness of standardized and individualized acupuncture treatment in patients with chronic low back pain. A single-center randomized controlled single-blind trial was performed in a general medical practice in Germany run by a Chinese-born medical doctor trained in western and Chinese medicine. One hundred and fifty outpatients with chronic low back pain were randomly allocated to two groups (78 standardized and 72 individualized acupuncture). Patients received either standardized acupuncture or individualized acupuncture. Treatment encompassed between 10 and 15 treatments based on individual symptoms with two treatments per week. The main outcome measure was the area under the curve (AUC) summarizing eight weeks of daily rated pain severity measured with a visual analogue scale (0 mm = no pain, 100 mm = worst imaginable pain). No significant differences between groups were observed for the AUC (individualized acupuncture mean: 1768.7 (95% CI, 1460.4; 2077.1); standardized acupuncture 1482.9 (1177.2; 1788.7); group difference, 285.8 (−33.9; 605.5) P=0.080). In this single-center trial, individualized acupuncture was not superior to standardized acupuncture for patients suffering from chronic pain. As a next step, a multicenter noninferiority study should be performed to investigate whether standardised acupuncture treatment for chronic low back pain might be applicable in a broader usual care setting. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov NCT00758017

Purpose: Surgical site infection (SSI) occurs in up to 25% of patients after elective laparotomy. We aimed to determine the effect of SSI on healthcare costs and patients' quality of life. Methods: In this post hoc analysis based on the RECIPE trial, we studied a 30-day postoperative outcome of SSI in a single-center, prospective randomized controlled trial comparing subcutaneous wound irrigation with 0.04% polyhexanide to 0.9% saline after elective laparotomy. Total medical costs were analyzed accurately per patient with the tool of our corporate controlling team which is based on diagnosis-related groups in Germany. Results: Between November 2015 and May 2018, 456 patients were recruited. The overall rate of SSI was 28.2%. Overall costs of inpatient treatment were higher in the group with SSI: median 16.685 euro; 19.703 USD (IQR 21.638 euro; 25.552 USD) vs. median 11.235 euro; 13.276 USD (IQR 11.564 euro; 13.656 USD); p < 0.001. There was a difference in surgery costs (median 6.664 euro; 7.870 USD with SSI vs. median 5.040 euro; 5.952 USD without SSI; p = 0.001) and costs on the surgical ward (median 8.404 euro; 9.924 USD with SSI vs. median 4.690 euro; 5.538 USD without SSI; p < 0.001). Patients with SSI were less satisfied with the cosmetic result (4.3% vs. 16.2%; p < 0.001). Overall costs for patients who were irrigated with saline were median 12.056 euro; 14.237 USD vs. median 12.793 euro; 15.107 USD in the polyhexanide group (p = 0.52). Conclusion: SSI after elective laparotomy increased hospital costs substantially. This is an additional reason why the prevention of SSI is important. Overall costs for intraoperative wound irrigation with saline were comparable with polyhexanide

Body Matters:Exploration of the Human Body as a Resource for the Design of Technologies for Meditation

Much research on meditation has shown its significant benefits for wellbeing. In turn, there has been growing HCI interest for the design of novel interactive technologies intended to facilitate meditation in real-time. In many of these systems, physiological signals have been mapped onto creative audiovisual feedback, however, there has been limited attention to the experiential qualities of meditation and the specific role that the body may play in them. In this paper, we report on workshops with 24 experts exploring the bodily sensations that emerge during meditation. Through material speculation, participants shared their lived experience of meditation and identified key stages during which they may benefit from additional aid, often multimodal. Findings emphasize the importance of recreating mindful physical sensations during moments of mind-wandering; in particular for supporting the regulation of attention through a range of embodied metaphors and haptic feedback, tailored to key transitions in the meditation process
