conversation analytic evidence about the problems and roadblocks that can occur in
institutional interaction. Traditional training often relies on role-play, but that differs systematically from the actual events it is meant to mimic and prepare for. In contrast,
CARM uses animated audio- and video-recordings of real-time, actual encounters. CARM
provides a unique framework for discussing and evaluating, in slow motion, actual talk as
people do their jobs. It also provides an evidence base for making decisions about effective
practice and communication policy in organizations. This article describes CARM's
distinctive practices and its impact on professional development across different

Copyright @ 2008 BSA Publications Ltd.Perspectives on gender and identity that emphasize variability of performance, local context and individual agency have displaced earlier paradigms.These are now perceived to have supported gender stereotypes and language ideologies by emphasizing gender difference and homogeneity within genders. In a secondary analysis of health and illness narratives we explore the interaction of class and gender in individuals' constructions of gendered identity. High social class men perform gender in particularly varied ways and we speculate that this variable repertoire, including the use of what was once termed `women's language', is linked to a capacity to maintain social distinction and authority. Men's performance of conventional masculinity is often threatened by both the experience of illness and being interviewed about personal experience. Lower social class women in particular demonstrate an intensification of a pre-existing informal family and support group culture, marking successful members by awarding them the accolade of being `lovely'.ESR
The geodesic approximation for lump dynamics and coercivity of the Hessian for harmonic maps
The most fruitful approach to studying low energy soliton dynamics in field
theories of Bogomol'nyi type is the geodesic approximation of Manton. In the
case of vortices and monopoles, Stuart has obtained rigorous estimates of the
errors in this approximation, and hence proved that it is valid in the low
speed regime. His method employs energy estimates which rely on a key
coercivity property of the Hessian of the energy functional of the theory under
consideration. In this paper we prove an analogous coercivity property for the
Hessian of the energy functional of a general sigma model with compact K\"ahler
domain and target. We go on to prove a continuity property for our result, and
show that, for the CP^1 model on S^2, the Hessian fails to be globally coercive
in the degree 1 sector. We present numerical evidence which suggests that the
Hessian is globally coercive in a certain equivariance class of the degree n
sector for n>1. We also prove that, within the geodesic approximation, a single

Spectral-analysis-surface-waves-method in ground characterization
The prediction of train induced vibration levels in structures close to railway tracks before track construction starts is important in order to avoid having to implement costly mitigation measures afterwards. The used models require an accurate characterization of the propagation medium i.e. the soil layers. To this end the spectral analysis of surface waves (SASW) method has been chosen among the active surface waves techniques available. As dynamic source a modal sledge hammer has been used. The generated vibrations have been measured at known offsets by means of several accelerometers. There are many parameters involved in estimating the experimental dispersion curve and, later on, thickness and propagation velocities of the different layers. Tests have been carried out at the Segovia railway station. Its main building covers some of the railway tracks and vibration problems in the building should be avoided. In the paper these tests as well as the influence of several parameters on the estimated soil profile will be detailed

Increased Single-Lift Thicknesses for Unbound Aggregate Base Courses
A study was conducted to evaluate the feasibility of compacting unbound aggregate base courses in thicker lifts than currently permitted by state departments of transportation (DOTs). At present, the majority of states allow a maximum lift thickness of 8 inches or less. This project constructed and tested full-scale test sections using a variety of material types. Two test pads were constructed in an aggregate quarry in Texas utilizing crushed limestone. Three crushed granite test sections were built as part of a road widening project in Georgia, and two test pads were constructed of uncrushed and partially crushed gravel with loess fines at a gravel production facility near Memphis, Tennessee. Single-lift thicknesses varied from 6 inches to 21 inches. Moisture contents and densities were evaluated using the Nuclear Density Gauge (NDG). Nondestructive seismic testing, using the Spectral-Analysis-of-Surface-Waves (SASW) technique, was used to evaluate stiffness profiles within the compacted lifts. Cyclic plate load tests were accomplished by means of the Rolling Dynamic Deflectometer (RDD), modified for this static application. Results showed that compaction targets could be attained for lifts up to 21 inches thick. Density and stiffness results for 13-inch thick lifts in the Georgia tests were equal to, or better than, the results for the base placed in two lifts, a 7-inch lift followed by a 6-inch lift. Higher moisture contents during compaction yielded lower shear wave velocity and Young’s modulus values. Seismic results show that the upper 3 inches of the final test pads had lower stiffness values, presumably from lower effective stresses near the surface and possibly from some disturbance caused by the compaction equipment. Disaster Recovery Manual (2010)
The Syracuse University Library Disaster Recovery Plan for library materials outlines procedures for salvaging a wide variety of library materials in the event of a disaster of minor emergency. We have designed this plan to help library staff cope with and recover materials from minor emergencies that typically involve 500 or less items. The majority of these emergencies will be caused by interior flooding due to leaky pipes (or water coming in from other vulnerable areas in library buildings) or from patron mishaps. The resultant wet books and other objects, such as photographs, microfilm, and sound recordings, can usually be dried on location and returned to service with minimal effort. Please note that this document takes effect after the safety and security of library staff and patrons has been secured.

Impact echo data from bridge deck testing: Visualization and interpretation
Accurate assessment of the condition of bridges leads to their economic management. Ultrasonic seismic methods can be successfully used for this purpose through evaluation of changes in material characteristics and detection of the development of defects and zones of deterioration. The impact echo (IE) method is of special benefit in evaluation of corrosion-induced deck delamination, due to the method's nondestructive nature, speed of evaluation, and ability to detect delaminated zones at various stages of deterioration: from initial to progressed and developed. The traditional approach in condition assessment of bridge decks by IE on the basis of review of individual test point records and a new automated approach based on three-dimensional (3-D) data visualization are presented. The developed 3-D visualization platform allows both the advanced presentation and interpretation of IE data. The data presentation is provided as 3-D translucent visualizations of reflectors in a bridge deck section and horizontal and vertical cross sections through all distinctive zones, including a zone of delamination. The associated interpretation platform allows both (a) the overall assessment of the condition of the deck, through cumulative distributions and histograms of reflection intensity, and (b) identification of deteriorated zones of the deck for repair or rehabilitation in an efficient and intuitive way. Reconstructing mass profiles of simulated galaxy clusters by combining Sunyaev-Zeldovich and X-ray images
We present a method to recover mass profiles of galaxy clusters by combining
data on thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (tSZ) and X-ray imaging, thereby avoiding to
use any information on X-ray spectroscopy. This method, which represents a
development of the geometrical deprojection technique presented in Ameglio et
al. (2007), implements the solution of the hydrostatic equilibrium equation. In
order to quantify the efficiency of our mass reconstructions, we apply our
technique to a set of hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy clusters. We propose
two versions of our method of mass reconstruction. Method 1 is completely
model-independent, while Method 2 assumes instead the analytic mass profile
proposed by Navarro et al. (1997) (NFW). We find that the main source of bias
in recovering the mass profiles is due to deviations from hydrostatic
equilibrium, which cause an underestimate of the mass of about 10 per cent at
r_500 and up to 20 per cent at the virial radius. Method 1 provides a
reconstructed mass which is biased low by about 10 per cent, with a 20 per cent
scatter, with respect to the true mass profiles. Method 2 proves to be more
stable, reducing the scatter to 10 per cent, but with a larger bias of 20 per
cent, mainly induced by the deviations from equilibrium in the outskirts. To
better understand the results of Method 2, we check how well it allows to
recover the relation between mass and concentration parameter. When analyzing
the 3D mass profiles we find that including in the fit the inner 5 per cent of
the virial radius biases high the halo concentration. Also, at a fixed mass,
hotter clusters tend to have larger concentration. Our procedure recovers the
concentration parameter essentially unbiased but with a scatter of about 50 per
