A Spectroscopic Survey of a Sample of Active M Dwarfs
A moderate resolution spectroscopic survey of Fleming's sample of 54 X-ray
selected M dwarfs with photometric distances less than 25 pc is presented.
Radial and rotation velocities have been measured by fits to the H-alpha
profiles. Radial velocities have been measured by cross correlation. Artificial
broadening of an observed spectrum has produced a relationship between H-alpha
FWHM and rotation speed, which we use to infer rotation speeds for the entire
sample by measurement of the H-alpha emission line. We find 3 ultra-fast
rotators (UFRs, vsini > 100km/s), and 8 stars with 30 < vsini < 100 km/s. The
UFRs have variable emission. Cross-correlation velocities measured for
ultra-fast rotators (UFRs) are shown to depend on rotation speed and the
filtering used. The radial velocity dispersion of the sample is 17 km/s. A new
double emission line spectroscopic binary with a period of 3.55 days has been
discovered, and another known one is in the sample. Three other objects are
suspected spectroscopic binaries, and at least six are visual doubles. The only
star in the sample observed to have significant lithium is a known TW Hya
Association member, TWA 8A. These results show that there are a number of young
(< 10^8 yr) and very young (< 10^7 yr) low mass stars in the immediate solar
neighbourhood. The H-alpha activity strength does not depend on rotation speed.
Our fast rotators are less luminous than similarly fast rotators in the
Pleiades. They are either younger than the Pleiades, or gained angular momentum

Chemical data assimilation estimates of continental U.S. ozone and nitrogen budgets during the Intercontinental Chemical Transport Experiment-North America
Global ozone analyses, based on assimilation of stratospheric profile and ozone column measurements, and NOy predictions from the Real-time Air Quality Modeling System (RAQMS) are used to estimate the ozone and NOy budget over the continental United States during the July-August 2004 Intercontinental Chemical Transport Experiment-North America (INTEX-A). Comparison with aircraft, satellite, surface, and ozonesonde measurements collected during INTEX-A show that RAQMS captures the main features of the global and continental U.S. distribution of tropospheric ozone, carbon monoxide, and NOy with reasonable fidelity. Assimilation of stratospheric profile and column ozone measurements is shown to have a positive impact on the RAQMS upper tropospheric/lower stratosphere ozone analyses, particularly during the period when SAGE III limb scattering measurements were available. Eulerian ozone and NOy budgets during INTEX-A show that the majority of the continental U.S. export occurs in the upper troposphere/lower stratosphere poleward of the tropopause break, a consequence of convergence of tropospheric and stratospheric air in this region. Continental U.S. photochemically produced ozone was found to be a minor component of the total ozone export, which was dominated by stratospheric ozone during INTEX-A. The unusually low photochemical ozone export is attributed to anomalously cold surface temperatures during the latter half of the INTEX-A mission, which resulted in net ozone loss during the first 2 weeks of August. Eulerian NOy budgets are shown to be very consistent with previously published estimates. The NOy export efficiency was estimated to be 24%, with NOx + PAN accounting for 54% of the total NOy export during INTEX-A. Copyright 2007 by the American Geophysical Union
Formation and Evolution of Planetary Systems: Cold Outer Disks Associated with Sun-like stars
We present the discovery of debris systems around three solar mass stars
based upon observations performed with the Spitzer Space Telescope as part of a
Legacy Science Program, ``the Formation and Evolution of Planetary Systems''
(FEPS). We also confirm the presence of debris around two other stars. All the
stars exhibit infrared emission in excess of the expected photospheres in the
70 micron band, but are consistent with photospheric emission at <= 33 micron.
This restricts the maximum temperature of debris in equilibrium with the
stellar radiation to T < 70 K. We find that these sources are relatively old in
the FEPS sample, in the age range 0.7 - 3 Gyr. Based on models of the spectral
energy distributions, we suggest that these debris systems represent materials
generated by collisions of planetesimal belts. We speculate on the nature of
these systems through comparisons to our own Kuiper Belt, and on the likely
planet(s) responsible for stirring the system and ultimately releasing dust
through collisions. We further report observations of a nearby star HD 13974 (d
=11 pc) that is indistinguishable from a bare photosphere at both 24 micron and
70 micron. The observations place strong upper limits on the presence of any

The Luminosity and Mass Functions of Low-Mass Stars in the Galactic Disk: I. The Calibration Region
We present measurements of the luminosity and mass functions of low-mass
stars constructed from a catalog of matched Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and
2 Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) detections. This photometric catalog contains
more than 25,000 matched SDSS and 2MASS point sources spanning ~30 square
degrees on the sky. We have obtained follow-up spectroscopy, complete to J=16,
of more than 500 low mass dwarf candidates within a 1 square degree sub-sample,
and thousands of additional dwarf candidates in the remaining 29 square
degrees. This spectroscopic sample verifies that the photometric sample is
complete, uncontaminated, and unbiased at the 99% level globally, and at the
95% level in each color range. We use this sample to derive the luminosity and
mass functions of low-mass stars over nearly a decade in mass (0.7 M_sun > M_*
> 0.1 M_sun). We find that the logarithmically binned mass function is best fit
with an M_c=0.29 log-normal distribution, with a 90% confidence interval of
M_c=0.20--0.50. These 90% confidence intervals correspond to linearly binned
mass functions peaking between 0.27 M_sun and 0.12 M_sun, where the best fit MF
turns over at 0.17 M_sun. A power law fit to the entire mass range sampled
here, however, returns a best fit of alpha=1.1 (where the Salpeter slope is
alpha = 2.35). These results agree well with most previous investigations,
though differences in the analytic formalisms adopted to describe those mass
functions can give the false impression of disagreement. Given the richness of
modern-day astronomical datasets, we are entering the regime whereby stronger
conclusions can be drawn by comparing the actual datapoints measured in
different mass functions, rather than the results of analytic analyses that

Bridging the gap: probationer educational psychologists' use of computer mediated conferencing
Twelve educational psychologists in training on the M.Sc. course at the University of Strathclyde were provided with e-mail and on-line computer conferencing facilities with the aim of developing critical thinking and transferable information technology skills. A follow-up 6 months after the end of the course revealed that the use of computer-mediated conferencing increased the amount of and improved the structure of exchanges between educational psychologists in training, which helped them to bridge the gap between the course and the commencement of their probationary period. The findings from this case study highlight the importance of computer-mediated conferencing for the training of educational psychologists. The implications for educational psychology services are also discussed
