    Social-ecological enabling conditions for payments for ecosystem services

    The concept of “enabling conditions” centers on conditions that facilitate approaches to addressing social and ecological challenges. Although multiple fields have independently addressed the concept of enabling conditions, the literature lacks a shared understanding or integration of concepts. We propose a more synthesized understanding of enabling conditions beyond disciplinary boundaries by focusing on the enabling conditions that influence the implementation of a range of environmental policies termed payments for ecosystem services (PES). Through an analysis of key literature from different disciplinary perspectives, we examined how researchers and practitioners refer to and identify enabling conditions within the context of PES. Through our synthesis, we identified 24 distinct enabling conditions organized within 4 broad themes: biophysical, economic, governance, and social-cultural conditions. We found that the literature coalesces around certain enabling conditions, such as strong ecosystem science and existing institutions, regardless of disciplinary background or journal audience. We also observed key differences in how authors perceive the direction of influence for property type, program objectives, and number of actors. Additionally, we noted an emphasis on the importance of the contextual nature of many enabling conditions that may cause certain conditions to have a disproportionate impact on successful implementation in some circumstances. Unraveling the relative importance of specific enabling conditions in diverse contexts remains a research frontier. Ultimately, no single disciplinary perspective is likely to provide all necessary insights for PES creation, and given the intertwined nature of enabling conditions, practitioners need to consider insights from multiple dimensions. Our work suggests opportunities to better connect diverse conversations through integration of concepts, a common vocabulary, and a synthetic framework

    Weak-anchoring effects in a thin pinned ridge of nematic liquid crystal

    A theoretical investigation of weak-anchoring effects in a thin two-dimensional pinned static ridge of nematic liquid crystal resting on a flat solid substrate in an atmosphere of passive gas is performed. Specifically, we solve a reduced version of the general system of governing equations recently derived by Cousins et al. [Proc. Roy. Soc. A}, 478(2259):20210849, 2022] valid for a symmetric thin ridge under the one-constant approximation of the Frank--Oseen bulk elastic energy with pinned contact lines to determine the shape of the ridge and the behaviour of the director within it. Numerical investigations covering a wide range of parameter values indicate that the energetically-preferred solutions can be classified in terms of the Jenkins--Barratt--Barbero--Barberi critical thickness into five qualitatively different types of solution. In particular, the theoretical results suggest that anchoring breaking occurs close to the contact lines. The theoretical predictions are supported by the results of physical experiments for a ridge of the nematic 4'-pentyl-4-biphenylcarbonitrile (5CB). In particular, these experiments show that the homeotropic anchoring at the gas--nematic interface is broken close to the contact lines by the stronger rubbed planar anchoring at the nematic--substrate interface. A comparison between the experimental values of and the theoretical predictions for the effective refractive index of the ridge gives a first estimate of the anchoring strength of an interface between air and 5CB to be (9.80±1.12)×106Nm1(9.80\pm1.12)\times10^{-6}\,{\rm N m}^{-1} at a temperature of (22±1.5)(22\pm1.5)^\circC

    Glavni je cilj provedenih istraživanja, empirijskog neeksperimentalnog u listopadu 2006. g., i kvalitativnog, provedenog metodom Delphi u travnju 2008. g., ispitivanje gledišta učitelja primarnog obrazovanja o uporabi jednog računala u razredu i o novoj obrazovnoj sredini Ñ učionici s jednim računalom. U rezultatima kvantitativnog istraživanja statistički je značajna na razini 1% varijabla posjedovanje računala u razredu, što znači da učitelji koji imaju računalo u razredu imaju pozitivnije gledište o njegovoj uporabi. Rezultati kvalitativnog istraživanja upozoravaju na potrebu prilagodbe obrazovnog sustava promijenjenom načinu življenja. Tradicionalni školski sustav nužno je transformirati u sustav novoga digitalnog doba, obilježenog inovacijama te nizom postupaka pretvorbe i redefinicije nastavnih programa koji su konzistentni s novim tehnologijama i pratećom multimedijom.The main goal of the empirical, non-experimental study conducted in October 2006, and of the qualitative study conducted by using the Delphi method in April 2008, was to examine the views of elementary-school teachers on the use of one computer in the classroom and on the new educational environment - the one-computer classroom. The results of the quantitative study show that the variable of having a computer in the classroom is statistically significant at the level of 1%, which means that teachers who have a computer in the classroom have a more positive view on its use. The results of the qualitative study indicate that there is a need to adjust the education system to a changed way of life. The traditional school system must be transformed into a new digital age system, marked by innovations and a number of processes of transforming and redefining teaching programmes to make them consistent with the new technologies and accompanying multimedia

    Geometagenomics illuminates the impact of agriculture on the distribution and prevalence of plant viruses at the ecosystem scale

    Disease emergence events regularly result from human activities such as agriculture, which frequently brings large populations of genetically uniform hosts into contact with potential pathogens. Although viruses cause nearly 50% of emerging plant diseases, there is little systematic information about virus distribution across agro-ecological interfaces and large gaps in understanding of virus diversity in nature. Here we applied a novel landscape-scale geometagenomics approach to examine relationships between agricultural land use and distributions of plantassociated viruses in two Mediterranean-climate biodiversity hotspots (Western Cape region of South Africa and Rhône river delta region of France). In total, we analysed 1725 geo-referenced plant samples collected over two years from 4.5 × 4.5 km2 grids spanning farmlands and adjacent uncultivated vegetation. We found substantial virus prevalence (25.8–35.7%) in all ecosystems, but prevalence and identified family-level virus diversity were greatest in cultivated areas, with some virus families displaying strong agricultural associations. Our survey revealed 94 previously unknown virus species, primarily from uncultivated plants. This is the first effort to systematically evaluate plant-associated viromes across broad agro-ecological interfaces. Our findings indicate that agriculture substantially influences plant virus distributions and highlight the extent of current ignorance about the diversity and roles of viruses in nature
