Employee engagement in the interpersonal context

    Get PDF
2016 Summer.Includes bibliographical references. To advance the theoretical understanding and research on engagement, I examined how engagement spreads within the interpersonal context. I developed and tested a theoretical framework built upon Kahn’s (1990) conceptualization of employee engagement, Byrne’s (2015) newly proposed mechanism of engagement contagion, and research on team dynamics. The study sample included students (N = 148) working in teams on a semester-long course project. Through the measurement of engagement levels and individual differences related to emotional and cognitive contagion, I assessed two potential mechanisms for the transmission of engagement. Results showed that emotional contagion (as assessed with emotional contagion susceptibility) is not a significant predictor of change in affective engagement scores between two time points. Further, although cognitive contagion (as assessed with perceptions of shared mental models) significantly predicted change in cognitive engagement scores, students reporting higher levels of this construct experienced small changes in cognitive engagement. Based on these findings, recommendations for future research are discussed

The present disclosure describes systems and methods that can capture multiple images from multiple optical paths on a single image sensor. More particularly, the multiple optical paths can be directed to the single image sensor, and the image sensor can be partitioned into one or more separate regions to capture the multiple images. An assembly of optical path folding elements can be configured to select one or more images from the multiple optical paths, and allow the selected images to be imaged on a corresponding partitioned region of the single image sensor. The system can actuate the assembly of optical path folding elements to select one or more images to be captured and/or achieve optical image stabilization of the one or more captured images. Keywords associated with the present disclosure include: computing systems (e.g., smartphone, smartwatch, mobile phone, mobile computer, laptop, headset, wearabale); camera; augmented reality; virtual reality; image capture; optical path; folding element; optical image stabilization; image sensor

    Get PDF

WACCM-D Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model with D-region ion chemistry

    Get PDF
Energetic particle precipitation (EPP) and ion chemistry affect the neutral composition of the polar middle atmosphere. For example, production of odd nitrogen and odd hydrogen during strong events can decrease ozone by tens of percent. However, the standard ion chemistry parameterization used in atmospheric models neglects the effects on some important species, such as nitric acid. We present WACCM-D, a variant of the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model, which includes a set of lower ionosphere (D-region) chemistry: 307 reactions of 20 positive ions and 21 negative ions. We consider realistic ionization scenarios and compare the WACCM-D results to those from the Sodankylä Ion and Neutral Chemistry (SIC), a state-of-the-art 1-D model of the D-region chemistry. We show that WACCM-D produces well the main characteristics of the D-region ionosphere, as well as the overall proportion of important ion groups, in agreement with SIC. Comparison of ion concentrations shows that the WACCM-D bias is typically within ±10% or less below 70 km. At 70–90 km, when strong altitude gradients in ionization rates and/or ion concentrations exist, the bias can be larger for some groups but is still within tens of percent. Based on the good agreement overall and the fact that part of the differences are caused by different model setups, WACCM-D provides a state-of-the-art global representation of D-region ion chemistry and is therefore expected to improve EPP modeling considerably. These improvements are demonstrated in a companion paper by Andersson et al

    No full text
In Brazil, the relevance of plants for public health is reflected in the existence of the PNPMF and ANVISA regulations aimed at plant drugs and herbal medicines. Among them, the monographs of medicinal plants of the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia establish the quality requirements, being fundamental in the elaboration, production and quality control of medicinal plants. The objective of these policies is to guarantee the safe and rational use of medicinal plants and also the appreciation of Brazilian sociobiodiversity. So, this work aims to analyze how the 6th Edition of the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia reflects not only the biological diversity, but also the cultural diversity of the country by the traditional use of plant species native that are included in it. A searching of native Brazilian plant species cited in the monographs of medicinal plants in the 6th Edition of the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia was carried out, and only 25 native species were found out of the 106 cited. From the Flora and Funga do Brasil databases of the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro, World Flora Online, Plants of the World Online and Tropicos, the scientific nomenclature of the cited native species was also verified, finding 10 names with erros. Following the selection of species, a bibliographic survey was carried out on the traditional use of these species in Brazil based on ethnobotanical studies that cite some traditional use for each species published in the last 10 years. With this search, a database was created with the following information compiled by species: updated scientific names, popular names, uses, used parts, information provider community and classification (as mentioned in the article), state of federation in which the community is located and articles on the species were cited. Considering the results and the fact that Brazil has the greatest biodiversity in the world and a great wealth of knowledge about the management and use of medicinal plants, it is clear that the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia presents gaps related to the representation of diversity, not only biological, but also cultural from the country. Thus, a greater attention should be given to the area of Botany and Ethnobotany in the constitution of public policies in order to fill existing gaps and fulfill its objectives. The importance of databases such as the present study is highlighted as a tool for the protection of traditional knowledge and the country's genetic heritage.223 p

This paper may be called for at the end of Session G if time permits.Author Institution: Department of Chemistry, University of California; Department of Chemistry, University of CaliforniaThe first twenty energy levels and wave functions for an oscillator with potential energy V=ax4V = ax^{4} have been obtained by diagonalizing a 100×100100 \times 100 Hamiltonian matrix in the representation of the harmonic oscillator. These wave functions have been used to calculate the matrix elements of x,x2,x3,x4x, x^{2}, x^{3}, x^{4}, and x5x^{5} in the representation of the quartic oscillator. Application of these results to the calculations of energy levels and matrix elements for mixed harmonic-quartic oscillators and double-minimum potential wells will be discussed
