Protest movements in colonial East Africa : aspects of early African response to European rule
Concepts of protest in Africa, like historical concepts elsewhere, have undergone considerable change through the last half century, and it is possible at present to distinguish three schools of thought. These are the colonialist school, the nationalist, and, for want of a more specific term, the revisionist.

Ferroelectric Nanotubes
We report the independent invention of ferroelectric nanotubes from groups in
several countries. Devices have been made with three different materials: lead
zirconate-titanate PbZr1-xTixO3 (PZT); barium titanate BaTiO3; and strontium
bismuth tantalate SrBi2Ta2O9 (SBT). Several different deposition techniques
have been used successfully, including misted CSD (chemical solution
deposition) and pore wetting. Ferroelectric hysteresis and high optical
nonlinearity have been demonstrated. The structures are analyzed via SEM, TEM,
XRD, AFM (piezo-mode), and SHG. Applications to trenching in Si dynamic random
access memories, ink-jet printers, and photonic devices are discussed.
Ferroelectric filled pores as small as 20 nm in diameter have been studied
Soft and flexible poly(ethylene glycol) nanotubes for local drug delivery
Nanotubes are emerging as promising materials for healthcare applications but the selection of clinically relevant starting materials for their synthesis remains largely unexplored. Here we present, for the first time, the synthesis of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) based nanotubes via the photopolymerization of poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate and other diacrylate derivatives within the pores of anodized aluminum oxide templates. Template-assisted synthesis allowed the manufacture of a diverse set of polymeric nanotubes with tunable physical characteristics including diameter (∼200–400 nm) and stiffness (405–902 kPa). PEG nanotubes were subjected to cytotoxicty assessment in cell lines and primary stem cells and showed excellent cytocompatability (IC50 > 120 μg ml−1). Nanotubes were readily drug loaded but released the majority of the drug over 5 days. Direct administration of drug loaded nanotubes to human orthotopic breast tumors substantially reduced tumor growth and metastasis and outperformed i.v. administration at the equivalent dose. Overall, this nanotube templating platform is emerging as a facile route for the manufacture of poly(ethylene glycol) nanotubes
The LISA PathFinder DMU and Radiation Monitor
The LISA PathFinder DMU (Data Management Unit) flight model was formally
accepted by ESA and ASD on 11 February 2010, after all hardware and software
tests had been successfully completed. The diagnostics items are scheduled to
be delivered by the end of 2010. In this paper we review the requirements and
performance of this instrumentation, specially focusing on the Radiation
Monitor and the DMU, as well as the status of their programmed use during
mission operations, on which work is ongoing at the time of writing.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, prepared for the Proceedings of the 8th

X20CoCrWMo10-9//Co3O4: a Metal-Ceramic Composite with Unique Efficiency Values for Water-Splitting in Neutral Regime
Water splitting allows the storage of solar energy into chemical bonds
(H2+O2) and will help to implement the urgently needed replacement of limited
available fossil fuels. Particularly in neutral environment electrochemically
initiated water splitting suffers from low efficiency due to high
overpotentials caused by the anode. Electro-activation of X20CoCrWMo10-9, a
Co-based tool steel resulted in a new composite material
(X20CoCrWMo10-9//Co3O4) that catalyzes the anode half-cell reaction of water
electrolysis with a so far unequalled effectiveness. The current density
achieved with this new anode in pH 7 corrected 0.1 M phosphate buffer is over a
wide range of overpotentials around 10 times higher compared to recently
developed, up-to-date electrocatalysts and represents the benchmark performance
advanced catalysts show in regimes that support water splitting significantly
better than pH 7 medium. X20CoCrWMo10-9//Co3O4 exhibited electrocatalytic
properties not only at pH 7, but also at pH 13, which is much superior to the
ones of IrO2-RuO2, single-phase Co3O4- or Fe/Ni- based catalysts. Both XPS and
FT-IR experiments unmasked Co3O4 as the dominating compound on the surface of
the X20CoCrWMo10-9//Co3O4 composite. Upon a comprehensive dual beam FIB-SEM
(focused ion beam-scanning electron microscopy) study we could show that the
new composite does not exhibit a classical substrate-layer structure due to the
intrinsic formation of the Co-enriched outer zone. This structural
particularity is basically responsible for the outstanding electrocatalytic OER
performance

Ulcerative colitis-risk loci on chromosomes 1p36 and 12q15 found by genome-wide association study.
Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the colon that presents as diarrhea and gastrointestinal bleeding. We performed a genome-wide association study using DNA samples from 1,052 individuals with ulcerative colitis and preexisting data from 2,571 controls, all of European ancestry. In an analysis that controlled for gender and population structure, ulcerative colitis loci attaining genome-wide significance and subsequent replication in two independent populations were identified on chromosomes 1p36 (rs6426833, combined P = 5.1 x 10(-13), combined odds ratio OR = 0.73) and 12q15 (rs1558744, combined P = 2.5 x 10(-12), combined OR = 1.35). In addition, combined genome-wide significant evidence for association was found in a region spanning BTNL2 to HLA-DQB1 on chromosome 6p21 (rs2395185, combined P = 1.0 x 10(-16), combined OR = 0.66) and at the IL23R locus on chromosome 1p31 (rs11209026, combined P = 1.3 x 10(-8), combined OR = 0.56; rs10889677, combined P = 1.3 x 10(-8), combined OR = 1.29)
