This contribution explores collaborative writing within an empirical studynow in its data analysis phase. It concerns didactic interventions carried outat the A. Rosmini primary school in Bressanone (BZ) where pupils write inthree languages (English, German and Italian) and where the use of collaborationis prevalent. The intention is to identify the characteristics and advantagesof collaboration which help to strengthen pupils’ writing skills. After highlighting how collaborative writing complements a process-basedapproach and brings with it various advantages, such as how it is an instrumentfor linguistic refinement and has authoritative pedagogical referencematrices (Don Milani and Mario Lodi), some examples of the pupils’ verbalreasoning are taken into consideration. It is concluded that collaborativewriting acts as a magnifying glass on the pupils’ work for the teacher, and forthe pupil themselves as an instrument of democratic education, as well asan opportunity for authentic language learning and personal growth.

Early childhood education and care 0–6: The state of the art of the national and international regulatory framework from an inclusive perspective

    Get PDF
This article presents a comprehensive review of the key documents and laws governing early childhood education in the 0-6 age range, which have contributed to the development of an integrated and unified system in Italy. The analysis of these materials reveals how international policies implemented since the 2000s have progressively shaped a multifaceted concept of inclusion. Moving beyond the notion of eliminating barriers and addressing injustice faced by children in difficulty, there has been a paradigm shift towards a holistic understanding of the child, emphasizing the harmonization of physical, social, and cognitive aspects. The legislative guidelines increasingly incorporate important “constants” such as the significance of early childhood education and care (ECER) in early identification of difficulties, the connection to family, community, and peer environments, and the need for high-quality initial and ongoing teacher training. These recommendations offer valuable insights for all stakeholders involved. While reviewing the milestones of Italian legislation, this study acknowledges the progress made and the challenges addressed, yet it also recognizes the importance of further implementation of certain recommendations

Abstract Objectives The early detection of bacteraemia and fungemia is of paramount importance to guide antimicrobial therapy in septic patients. In this study the 'time to detection' (TTD) value for the new blood culture system BacT/ALERT VIRTUO (VIRTUO) was evaluated in 1462 positive clinical bottles and compared with the TTD for 1601 positive clinical bottles incubated in the BacT/ALERT 3D system (BTA-3D). Methods The most representative microorganisms isolated from bottles incubated in both blood culture systems were divided into eight categories (in order of frequency): coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS), Escherichia coli, Enterobacteriaceae (other than E. coli ), Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus spp , viridans group streptococci, Pseudomonas aeruginosa , and Candida spp . Results The comparison of TTD values for the two blood culture systems strongly indicated that growth of the first five groups listed above was detected earlier with VIRTUO than with BTA-3D ( p Conclusions The new VIRTUO blood culture system can reduce the TTD for more than 75% of isolated microorganisms

Environmental Conditions along Tuna Larval Dispersion: Insights on the Spawning Habitat and Impact on Their Development Stages

Estimated larval backward trajectories of three Tuna species, namely, Atlantic Bluefin Tuna (Thunnus thynnus, Linnaeus, 1758), Bullet Tuna (Auxis Rochei, Risso, 1801) and Albacore Tuna (Thunnus alalunga, Bonnaterre, 1788) in the central Mediterranean Sea, were used to characterize their spawning habitats, and to assess the impact of changes due to the major environmental parameters (i.e., sea surface temperature and chlorophyll-a concentration) on larval development during their advection by surface currents. We assumed that the environmental variability experienced by larvae along their paths may have influenced their development, also affecting their survival. Our results showed that the Tuna larvae underwent an accelerated growth in favorable environmental conditions, impacting on the notochord development. In addition, further updated information on spawning and larval retention habitats of Atlantic Bluefin Tuna, Bullet and Albacore Tunas in the central Mediterranean Sea were delivered

Prolongation of incubation time improves clinical diagnosis of Mycobacterium xenopi infection and allows susceptibility testing of mycobacterial strains against multiple antibiotics.

Objectives: Mycobacterium xenopi is a nontuberculous mycobacterium (NTM) whose clinical diagnosis and drug susceptibility studies are frequently hampered by poor in vitro growth. Extending the culture incubation time from 42 days (common-standard) to 56 days could improve the likelihood of diagnosis and provide strains for phenotypic drug susceptibility profiling of this poorly studied but clinically relevant mycobacterium. Methods: Time-to-positivity of mycobacterial cultures incubated for 56 days were analysed and compared. Clinical mycobacteriosis was defined by ATS/IDSA criteria. In vitro susceptibility of M. xenopi isolates was tested by broth microdilution. Results: Of 3852 mycobacteria-positive cultures (26 different mycobacterial species),M. xenopi required by far the longest growth time in culture, exceeding the 42 days commonly used in routine diagnostics in 41.2% of cases versus 4.7% for other NTM and 2.0% for Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (P < 0.001). Prolonging the incubation time to 56 days had a great impact on M. xenopi diagnosis, as 56.3% (27/48) of patients would have not fulfilled the ATS/IDSA criteria at an incubation limited to 42 days. All 40 M. xenopi isolates from patients with clinical mycobacteriosis were fully susceptibility to macrolides and rifamycins in vitro and to moxifloxacin, amikacin and linezolid. Conclusion: These results indicate that a significant percentage (56.3%) of positive culture forM. xenopi would have incorrectly been reported as negative to clinicians without prolonging the incubation time to 56 days. Moreover, 56.3% of patients with M. xenopi disease would have missed the diagnosis along with an appropriate germ-based antimycobacterial treatment, otherwise fully effective

Intensity of medical care in internal medicine: impact on outcomes from a trend analysis over six years

In large acute medical wards treating heterogenous and complex patients intensity of patient care should be graduated according to clinical severity. We conducted a retrospective observational study on all unselected admissions (8838) to the internal medicine ward of the Santa Chiara Hospital of Trento from 2012 to 2017. During 2012 and 2013, a standard organizational model (SMC) was in place, while an organizational model for intensity of medical care (IMC) was introduced in 2014. In SMC, patient admission was performed according to bed availability only. In IMC, patients were allocated to three different ward settings (high, medium and post-acute care) based on the stratification of clinical instability. The National Early Warning Score (NEWS) was used for the stratification, together with the clinical judgment. The implementation of the IMC model led to a decrease of mortality and urgent transfers for clinical deterioration to Intensive Care Unit and to an increase of admissions from Intensive Care Unit and from regional spoke hospitals. Redesigning delivery processes based on IMC can play a pivotal role in improving patient outcomes and bed management

© 2022 Ricci et al. This article is available under a CreativeCommons License (Attribution 4.0 International, as described at https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/).Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 (Lp1) sequence type (ST) 23 is one of the most commonly detected STs in Italy where it currently causes all investigated outbreaks. ST23 has caused both epidemic and sporadic cases between 1995 and 2018 and was analysed at genomic level and compared with ST23 isolated in other countries to determine possible similarities and differences. A core genome multi-locus sequence typing (cgMLST), based on a previously described set of 1,521 core genes, and single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) approaches were applied to an ST23 collection including genomes from Italy, France, Denmark and Scotland. DNAs were automatically extracted, libraries prepared using NextEra library kit and MiSeq sequencing performed. Overall, 63 among clinical and environmental Italian Lp1 isolates and a further seven and 11 ST23 from Denmark and Scotland, respectively, were sequenced, and pangenome analysed. Both cgMLST and SNPs analyses showed very few loci and SNP variations in ST23 genomes. All the ST23 causing outbreaks and sporadic cases in Italy and elsewhere, were phylogenetically related independent of year, town or country of isolation. Distances among the ST23s were further shortened when SNPs due to horizontal gene transfers were removed. The Lp1 ST23 isolated in Italy have kept their monophyletic origin, but they are phylogenetically close also to ST23 from other countries. The ST23 are quite widespread in Italy, and a thorough epidemiological investigation is compelled to determine sources of infection when this ST is identified in both LD sporadic cases and outbreaks.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
