    The effect of compression shock heating in collision welding

    This work discusses the origin of temperature rise during the collision welding process. The different physical irreversible and reversible mechanisms which act as heat sources are described: isentropic compression work, shock dissipation, plasticity, and phase transitions. The temperature increase due to these effects is quantified in a continuum mechanics approach, and compared to predictions of atomistic molecular dynamics simulations. Focusing on a single impact scenario of 1100 aluminium at 700 m/s, our results indicate that shock heating and plastic work only effect a temperature rise of 100 K, and that the effects of phase change are not significant. This temperature rise cannot explain welding. In consequence, the relevant mechanism which effects bonding in collision welding must be due to the jet, which is only formed at oblique impact angles

    High-mobility group box 1 protein, receptor for advanced glycation end products and nucleosomes increases after marathon

    Background: Prolonged and strenuous exercise has been linked to potential exercise-induced myocardial damages. One potential key to unmask the discussed underlying mechanisms of this subclinical cardiac damage could be markers of immunogenic cell damage (ICD). We investigated the kinetics of high-mobility group box 1 protein (HMGB1), soluble receptor for advanced glycation end products (sRAGE), nucleosomes, high sensitive troponin T (hs-TnT) and high sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) before and up to 12 weeks post-race and described associations with routine laboratory markers and physiological covariates. Methods: In our prospective longitudinal study, 51 adults (82% males; 43 ± 9 years) were included. All participants underwent a cardiopulmonary evaluation 10-12 weeks pre-race. HMGB1, sRAGE, nucleosomes, hs-TnT and, hs-CRP were analysed 10-12 weeks prior, 1-2 weeks before, immediately, 24 h, 72 h, and 12 weeks post-race. Results: HMGB1, sRAGE, nucleosomes and hs-TnT increased significantly from pre- to immediately post-race (0.82-2.79 ng/mL; 1132-1388 pg/mL; 9.24-56.65 ng/mL; 6-27 ng/L; p < 0.001) and returned to baseline within 24-72 h. Hs-CRP increased significantly 24 h post-race (0.88-11.5 mg/L; p < 0.001). Change in sRAGE was positively associated with change in hs-TnT (rs = 0.352, p = 0.011). Longer marathon finishing time was significantly associated with decreased levels of sRAGE [-9.2 pg/mL (ÎČ = -9.2, SE = 2.2, p < 0.001)]. Conclusion: Prolonged and strenuous exercise increases markers of ICD immediately post-race, followed by a decrease within 72 h. An acute marathon event results in transient alterations of ICD, we assume that this is not solely driven by myocyte damages

In the northern hemisphere, voles and lemmings tend to show population cycles with regular fluctuations in numbers. In the southern hemisphere, small rodents tend to have large amplitude outbreaks with less regular intervals. In the light of vast research and debate over almost a century, we here discuss the driving forces of these different rodent population dynamics. We highlight ten questions directly related to the various characteristics of relevant populations and ecosystems that still need to be answered. This overview is not intended as a complete list of questions but rather focuses on the most important issues that are essential for understanding the generality of small rodent population dynamics.Peer reviewe

    Bottom-up effects of plant diversity on multitrophic interactions in a biodiversity experiment

    Biodiversity is rapidly declining1, and this may negatively affect ecosystem processes, including economically important ecosystem services. Previous studies have shown that biodiversity has positive effects on organisms and processes4 across trophic levels. However, only a few studies have so far incorporated an explicit food-web perspective. In an eight-year biodiversity experiment, we studied an unprecedented range of above- and below-ground organisms and multitrophic interactions. A multitrophic data set originating from a single long-term experiment allows mechanistic insights that would not be gained from meta-analysis of different experiments. Here we show that plant diversity effects dampen with increasing trophic level and degree of omnivory. This was true both for abundance and species richness of organisms. Furthermore, we present comprehensive above-ground/below-ground biodiversity food webs. Both above ground and below ground, herbivores responded more strongly to changes in plant diversity than did carnivores or omnivores. Density and richness of carnivorous taxa was independent of vegetation structure. Below-ground responses to plant diversity were consistently weaker than above-ground responses. Responses to increasing plant diversity were generally positive, but were negative for biological invasion, pathogen infestation and hyperparasitism. Our results suggest that plant diversity has strong bottom-up effects on multitrophic interaction networks, with particularly strong effects on lower trophic levels.     Diversity Promotes Temporal Stability across Levels of Ecosystem Organization in Experimental Grasslands

    The diversity–stability hypothesis states that current losses of biodiversity can impair the ability of an ecosystem to dampen the effect of environmental perturbations on its functioning. Using data from a long-term and comprehensive biodiversity experiment, we quantified the temporal stability of 42 variables characterizing twelve ecological functions in managed grassland plots varying in plant species richness. We demonstrate that diversity increases stability i) across trophic levels (producer, consumer), ii) at both the system (community, ecosystem) and the component levels (population, functional group, phylogenetic clade), and iii) primarily for aboveground rather than belowground processes. Temporal synchronization across studied variables was mostly unaffected with increasing species richness. This study provides the strongest empirical support so far that diversity promotes stability across different ecological functions and levels of ecosystem organization in grasslands

    Unagreement is an illusion

The final version is available from Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11049-015-9311-yThis paper proposes an analysis of unagreement, a phenomenon involving an apparent mismatch between a definite third person plural subject and first or second person plural subject agreement observed in various null subject languages (e.g. Spanish, Modern Greek and Bulgarian), but notoriously absent in others (e.g. Italian, European Portuguese). A cross-linguistic correlation between unagreement and the structure of adnominal pronoun constructions suggests that the availability of unagreement depends on whether person and definiteness are hosted by separate heads (in languages like Greek) or bundled on a single head (i.e. pronominal determiners in languages like Italian). Null spell-out of the head hosting person features high in the extended nominal projection of the subject leads to unagreement. The lack of unagreement in languages with pronominal determiners results from the interaction of their syntactic structure with the properties of the vocabulary items realising the head encoding both person and definiteness. The analysis provides a principled explanation for the cross-linguistic distribution of unagreement and suggests a unified framework for deriving unagreement, adnominal pronoun constructions, personal pronouns and pro

    Preventive Antibacterial Therapy in Acute Ischemic Stroke: A Randomized Controlled Trial

    BACKGROUND: Pneumonia is a major risk factor of death after acute stroke. In a mouse model, preventive antibacterial therapy with moxifloxacin not only prevents the development of post-stroke infections, it also reduces mortality, and improves neurological outcome significantly. In this study we investigate whether this approach is effective in stroke patients. METHODS: Preventive ANtibacterial THERapy in acute Ischemic Stroke (PANTHERIS) is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 80 patients with severe, non-lacunar, ischemic stroke (NIHSS>11) in the middle cerebral artery (MCA) territory. Patients received either intravenous moxifloxacin (400 mg daily) or placebo for 5 days starting within 36 hours after stroke onset. Primary endpoint was infection within 11 days. Secondary endpoints included neurological outcome, survival, development of stroke-induced immunodepression, and induction of bacterial resistance. FINDINGS: On intention-to treat analysis (79 patients), the infection rate at day 11 in the moxifloxacin treated group was 15.4% compared to 32.5% in the placebo treated group (p = 0.114). On per protocol analysis (n = 66), moxifloxacin significantly reduced infection rate from 41.9% to 17.1% (p = 0.032). Stroke associated infections were associated with a lower survival rate. In this study, neurological outcome and survival were not significantly influenced by treatment with moxifloxacin. Frequency of fluoroquinolone resistance in both treatment groups did not differ. On logistic regression analysis, treatment arm as well as the interaction between treatment arm and monocytic HLA-DR expression (a marker for immunodepression) at day 1 after stroke onset was independently and highly predictive for post-stroke infections. INTERPRETATION: PANTHERIS suggests that preventive administration of moxifloxacin is superior in reducing infections after severe non-lacunar ischemic stroke compared to placebo.     Plasma extracellular vesicle tau and TDP-43 as diagnostic biomarkers in FTD and ALS

    Minimally invasive biomarkers are urgently needed to detect molecular pathology in frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Here, we show that plasma extracellular vesicles (EVs) contain quantifiable amounts of TDP-43 and full-length tau, which allow the quantification of 3-repeat (3R) and 4-repeat (4R) tau isoforms. Plasma EV TDP-43 levels and EV 3R/4R tau ratios were determined in a cohort of 704 patients, including 37 genetically and 31 neuropathologically proven cases. Diagnostic groups comprised patients with TDP-43 proteinopathy ALS, 4R tauopathy progressive supranuclear palsy, behavior variant FTD (bvFTD) as a group with either tau or TDP-43 pathology, and healthy controls. EV tau ratios were low in progressive supranuclear palsy and high in bvFTD with tau pathology. EV TDP-43 levels were high in ALS and in bvFTD with TDP-43 pathology. Both markers discriminated between the diagnostic groups with area under the curve values &gt;0.9, and between TDP-43 and tau pathology in bvFTD. Both markers strongly correlated with neurodegeneration, and clinical and neuropsychological markers of disease severity. Findings were replicated in an independent validation cohort of 292 patients including 34 genetically confirmed cases. Taken together, the combination of EV TDP-43 levels and EV 3R/4R tau ratios may aid the molecular diagnosis of FTD, FTD spectrum disorders and ALS, providing a potential biomarker to monitor disease progression and target engagement in clinical trials.</p
