Testing a model of antecedents and consequences of defensive pessimism and self-handicapping in school physical education
There has been very limited research on the use of self-worth protection strategies in the achievement context of school physical education (PE). Thus, this study aimed to examine some antecedents and consequences of defensive pessimism and self-handicapping. The sample comprised 534 (females n = 275; males n = 259) British pupils recruited from two schools who responded to established questionnaires. Results of structural equation modelling analysis indicated that self-handicapping and defensive pessimism were positively predicted by fear of failure and negatively predicted by competence valuation. In addition, defensive pessimism was negatively predicted by physical self-concept. In turn, defensive pessimism negatively predicted enjoyment in PE and intentions to participate in future optional PE programs. Self-handicapping did not predict enjoyment or intentions. Results from multi-sample structural equation modelling showed the specified model to be largely invariant across males and females. The findings indicate that although both strategies aim to protect one’s self-worth, some of their antecedents and consequences in PE may differ
Investigating the Physiological and Psychosocial Responses of Single- and Dual-Player Exergaming in Young Adults
Objective: This study investigated the effect of acute exergaming on the physiological and psychosocial responses of young adults and the modulatory effect of a single- or dual-player game play situation. Materials and Methods: Thirty-six participants (19 male; 21.7 ± 3.8 years; 23.65 ± 3.17 kg/m(2)) each completed two 30-minute exergame sessions in a randomized order (single and dual player) while wearing an Actiheart(®) to estimate energy expenditure. Positive and negative affect, subjective vitality, and indices of intrinsic motivation were assessed directly after each gaming bout. Results: There was no significant difference in energy expenditure or psychosocial outcomes between conditions. Although males expended more energy than females in both single- (z = −2.124, P = 0.033) and dual-player situations (z = −2.679, P = 0.007), females reported significantly greater vitality (z = −2.219, P = 0.026) and effort/importance than males (z = −2.001, P = 0.045). Conversely, males reported a greater negative affect (z = −2.872, P = 0.004) and pressure/tension (z = −3.295, P = 0.001). A linear mixed effects model revealed that energy expenditure during exergaming was a significant predictor of interest and enjoyment (P = 0.001) and effort and importance (P = 0.001). This relationship between energy expenditure and psychosocial variables was not modulated by sex or order of gameplay (single or dual player first). Conclusion: The present results suggest that females have a more positive psychosocial response to exergaming relative to males, highlighting exergames such as Wii™ boxing as a potential avenue for future interventions seeking to address the low physical activity levels that characterize the young adult population
Economic Backwardness and Social Tension
We propose that relative economic backwardness contributes to the build-up of social tension and non-violent and violent conflict. We test our hypothesis using data on organized mass movements and armed civil conflict. The findings show that greater economic backwardness is consistently linked to a higher probability of onset of violent and especially non-violent forms of civil unrest. We provide evidence that the relationship is causal in instrumental variables estimations using new instruments, including mailing speeds and telegram charges around 1900. The magnitude of the effect of backwardness on social tension increases in the two-stage least-squares estimations
Autonomy support, basic need satisfaction and the optimal functioning of adult male and female sport participants: A test of basic needs theory
Grounded in Basic Needs Theory (BNT; Ryan and Deci, American Psychologist, 55, 68–78, 2000a), the present study aimed to: (a) test a theoretically-based model of coach autonomy support, motivational processes and well-/ill being among a sample of adult sport participants, (b) discern which basic psychological need(s) mediate the link between autonomy support and well-/ill-being, and (c) explore gender invariance in the hypothesized model. Five hundred and thirty nine participants (Male = 271;Female = 268; Mage = 22.75) completed a multi-section questionnaire tapping the targeted variables. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) analysis revealed that coach autonomy support predicted participants’ basic need satisfaction for autonomy, competence and relatedness. In turn, basic need satisfaction predicted greater subjective vitality when engaged in sport. Participants with low levels of autonomy were more susceptible to feeling emotionally and physically exhausted from their sport investment. Autonomy and competence partially mediated the path from autonomy support to subjective vitality. Lastly, the results supported partial invariance of the model with respect to gender
The Cuprous-Cupric Complex in Hydrochloric Acid Solution
In the process described by Diehl and Brouns (1) for the direct determination of copper in bronze by electrodeposition from hydrochloric acid solution using hydroxylammonium chloride as anodic depolarizer and controlling the cathode potential automatically (3), the sample of bronze is dissolved in hydrochloric acid by the dropwise addition of nitric acid or of hydrogen peroxide. Subsequently the solution is diluted and electrolyzed, the cathode reaction being· first the reduction of cupric ion to the chlorocuprous ion, CuCl3==, and then the deposition of copper. The time of electrolysis can be materially shortened if the first reduction is effected chemically, by the addition of hydrocxylammonium chloride or of stannous chloride. If the reducing agent be added to the solution before it is diluted, that is, to a fairly concentrated hydrochloric acid solution, the solution turns dark brown or black, the color being due to some material in solution which disappears on dilution. It became of interest to learn more of this dark colored solution, particularly since it was observed that a small amount of antimony did or did not deposit with the copper depending on whether the reduction was made before or after the dilution
An NLO QCD analysis of inclusive cross-section and jet-production data from the ZEUS experiment
The ZEUS inclusive differential cross-section data from HERA, for charged and
neutral current processes taken with e+ and e- beams, together with
differential cross-section data on inclusive jet production in e+ p scattering
and dijet production in \gamma p scattering, have been used in a new NLO QCD
analysis to extract the parton distribution functions of the proton. The input
of jet data constrains the gluon and allows an accurate extraction of
\alpha_s(M_Z) at NLO;
\alpha_s(M_Z) = 0.1183 \pm 0.0028(exp.) \pm 0.0008(model)
An additional uncertainty from the choice of scales is estimated as \pm
0.005. This is the first extraction of \alpha_s(M_Z) from HERA data alone.Comment: 37 pages, 14 figures, to be submitted to EPJC. PDFs available at

High-E_T dijet photoproduction at HERA
The cross section for high-E_T dijet production in photoproduction has been
measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 81.8
pb-1. The events were required to have a virtuality of the incoming photon,
Q^2, of less than 1 GeV^2 and a photon-proton centre-of-mass energy in the
range 142 < W < 293 GeV. Events were selected if at least two jets satisfied
the transverse-energy requirements of E_T(jet1) > 20 GeV and E_T(jet2) > 15 GeV
and pseudorapidity requirements of -1 < eta(jet1,2) < 3, with at least one of
the jets satisfying -1 < eta(jet) < 2.5. The measurements show sensitivity to
the parton distributions in the photon and proton and effects beyond
next-to-leading order in QCD. Hence these data can be used to constrain further
the parton densities in the proton and photon.Comment: 36 pages, 13 figures, 20 tables, including minor revisions from

Measurement of event shapes in deep inelastic scattering at HERA
Inclusive event-shape variables have been measured in the current region of
the Breit frame for neutral current deep inelastic ep scattering using an
integrated luminosity of 45.0 pb^-1 collected with the ZEUS detector at HERA.
The variables studied included thrust, jet broadening and invariant jet mass.
The kinematic range covered was 10 < Q^2 < 20,480 GeV^2 and 6.10^-4 < x < 0.6,
where Q^2 is the virtuality of the exchanged boson and x is the Bjorken
variable. The Q dependence of the shape variables has been used in conjunction
with NLO perturbative calculations and the Dokshitzer-Webber non-perturbative
corrections (`power corrections') to investigate the validity of this approach.Comment: 7+25 pages, 6 figure
Inclusive jet cross sections and dijet correlations in photoproduction at HERA
Inclusive jet cross sections in photoproduction for events containing a
meson have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated
luminosity of . The events were required to have a
virtuality of the incoming photon, , of less than 1 GeV, and a
photon-proton centre-of-mass energy in the range . The measurements are compared with next-to-leading-order (NLO) QCD
calculations. Good agreement is found with the NLO calculations over most of
the measured kinematic region. Requiring a second jet in the event allowed a
more detailed comparison with QCD calculations. The measured dijet cross
sections are also compared to Monte Carlo (MC) models which incorporate
leading-order matrix elements followed by parton showers and hadronisation. The
NLO QCD predictions are in general agreement with the data although differences
have been isolated to regions where contributions from higher orders are
expected to be significant. The MC models give a better description than the
NLO predictions of the shape of the measured cross sections.Comment: 43 pages, 12 figures, charm jets ZEU
