    Disability interactions in digital games: From accessibility to inclusion

    Digital games are a hugely popular activity enjoyed for the diverse experiences and relationships that they offer players. In 2019, games are more accessible to an increasingly diverse audience of disabled players through both new gaming technology and in-game options that allow people to tune their experiences. As a significant cultural medium, it is also challenging perceptions of disability in how characters are depicted. In this workshop, we aim to understand better the research challenges in making games for and with disabled players. We explore opportunities in games and disability through the lens of the new Disability Interaction (DIX) manifesto

    SketCHI 4.0 : hands-on special interest group on remote sketching in HCI

    Sketching is a physical activity: moving a stylus to create marks on paper or screen, from mind to visual output. But sketching can also translate to the virtual space. When we sketch collaboratively, we look for cues, exchange ideas, and annotate work via mark-making or comment. The digital medium has evolved to explore the potentials of sketching online, and this Special Interest Group aims to bring together researchers and practitioners interested in Sketching in HCI to explore the new virtual landscape of sketching, popularised by the constraints of the current world situation. We invite you to join our virtual group, discuss and share sketches, query the existing state-of-the-art, and help pave the way for the development of this medium in the virtual space with your imagery and ideation

    What we learn when designing with marginalised children

    Designing with marginalised children often produces detailed insights about their lives and communities. Whilst it is possible to extract methodological and artefact-centred knowledge from existing design cases, it can be difficult to utilise and build on some of the more complex and multifaceted issues that these generate, for instance, how researcher decisions inform design outcomes. In this workshop, we invite researchers to reflect on the insights design case studies with marginalized children offer to the larger Children-Computer Interaction (CCI) community. Our goals are to reflect on what kinds of insights are generated; what we as design researchers and practitioners would have wanted to know prior to undertaking such work, and; to identify ways of communicating these insights

    Circulating Endothelial Progenitor Cells in Kidney Transplant Patients

    Background: Kidney transplantation (RTx) leads to amelioration of endothelial function in patients with advanced renal failure. Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) may play a key role in this repair process. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of RTx and immunosuppressive therapy on the number of circulating EPCs. Methods: We analyzed 52 RTx patients (58613 years; 33 males, mean 6 SD) and 16 age- and gender-matched subjects with normal kidney function (57617; 10 males). RTx patients received a calcineurin inhibitor (CNI)-based (65%) or a CNI-free therapy (35%) and steroids. EPC number was determined by double positive staining for CD133/VEGFR2 and CD34/VEGFR2 by flow cytometry. Stromal cell-derived factor 1 alpha (SDF-1) levels were assessed by ELISA. Experimentally, to dissociate the impact of RTx from the impact of immunosuppressants, we used the 5/6 nephrectomy model. The animals were treated with a CNI-based or a CNI-free therapy, and EPCs (Sca+cKit+) and CD26+ cells were determined by flow cytometry. Results: Compared to controls, circulating number of CD34+/VEGFR2+ and CD133+/VEGFR2+ EPCs increased in RTx patients. There were no correlations between EPC levels and statin, erythropoietin or use of renin angiotensin system blockers in our study. Indeed, multivariate analysis showed that SDF-1 – a cytokine responsible for EPC mobilization – is independently associated with the EPC number. 5/6 rats presented decreased EPC counts in comparison to control animals. Immunosuppressive therapy was able to restore normal EPC values in 5/6 rats. These effects on EPC number were associated with reduced number of CD26+ cells, which might be related to consequent accumulation of SDF-1. Conclusions: We conclude that kidney transplantation and its associated use of immunosuppressive drugs increases the number of circulating EPCs via the manipulation of the CD26/SDF-1 axis. Increased EPC count may be associated to endothelial repair and function in these patients.

    Collaborative virtual environment to facilitate game design evaluation with children with ASC

    Involvement of children with autism spectrum conditions (ASC) in the design of new educational technology is becoming more prevalent. Despite potential barriers due to communication and ideation difficulties for children with ASC, adapted participatory design methods can successfully facilitate their direct involvement. Nonetheless, methods requiring face-to-face communication can still be difficult for children with ASC and research suggests that technology mediation could facilitate their contribution. This study explores the use of collaborative virtual environments (CVEs) as a medium through which students evaluated existing computer games and offered suggestions for game development. CVEs in which the users were represented by (a) avatars and (b) video-pods were compared to a face-to-face condition. Twelve typically developing (aged 8-9 years), 12 higher ability ASC (12-14) and 4 lower ability ASC children (12-14) participated. All student groups preferred the video-pod CVE and students with ASC were generally better able to contribute effectively through this medium than face-to-face
