    Study of a Solar Sensor for use in Space Vehicle Orientation Control Systems

    The solar sensor described herein may be used for a variety of space operations requiring solar orientation. The use of silicon solar cells as the sensing elements provides the sensor with sufficient capability to withstand the hazards of a space environment. A method of arranging the cells in a sensor consists simply of mounting them at a large angle to the base. The use of an opaque shield placed between the cells and perpendicular to the base enhances the small-angle sensitivity while adding slightly to the bulk of the sensor. The difference in illumination of these cells as the result of an oblique incidence of the light rays from the reference source causes an electrical error signal which, when used in a battery-bridge circuit, requires a minimum of electrical processing for use in a space-vehicle orientation control system. An error which could occur after prolonged operation of the sensor is that resulting from asymmetrical aging of opposite cells. This could be periodically corrected with a balance potentiometer. A more routine error in the sensor is that produced by reflected earth radiation. This error may be eliminated over a large portion of the operation time by restricting the field of view and, consequently, the capture capability. A more sophisticated method of eliminating this error is to use separate sensors, for capture and fine pointing, along with a switching device. An experimental model has been constructed and tested to yield an output sensitivity of 1.2 millivolts per second of arc with a load resistance of 1,000 ohms and a reference light source of approximately 1,200 foot-candles delivered at the sensor

    The Semantic Integration Portal is a demonstration of the potential capabilities of Semantic Web applications in a knowledge-rich context. Source data is taken from different online terrorist incident aggregators and marked up according to ontologies specific to those domains. Unlike other semantic web techniques, which scrape the internet for raw data and then mark-up against a standard ontology, the approach here is to allow each data source to have its own domain-specific ontology. This allows the data producers the opportunity to mark up their data in their own way, producing RDF data according to their own ontologies without the need to conform to a standard. A variety of semantic integration techniques can then be applied to these ontologies, both automatic and interactive, allowing data from both sets to be viewed in a suitable application, in this case the mspace browser. Future iterations of the semantic integration portal aim to introduce more automated ontology-mapping techniques, aligning data from a variety of diverse sources with less need for human intervention

    Carrier Recombination and Generation Rates for Intravalley and Intervalley Phonon Scattering in Graphene

    Electron-hole generation and recombination rates for intravalley and intervalley phonon scattering in Graphene are presented. The transverse and the longitudinal optical phonon modes (E2gE_{2g}-modes) near the zone center (Γ\Gamma-point) contribute to intravalley interband carrier scattering. At the zone edge (K(K)K(K')-point), only the transverse optical phonon mode (A1A'_{1}-mode) contributes significantly to intervalley interband scattering with recombination rates faster than those due to zone center phonons. The calculated recombination times range from less than a picosecond to more than hundreds of picoseconds and are strong functions of temperature and electron and hole densities. The theoretical calculations agree well with experimental measurements of the recombination rates of photoexcited carriers in graphene.Comment: 6 pages, 9 figure

    Analysis of a 290-Year Net Accumulation Time Series from Mt. Logan, Yukon

    A 102.5-m mechanically continuous firn and ice core sequence retrieved from the Northwest Col of Mt. Logan (latitude 60°30\u27N; longitude 140°35\u27W; site location 5340 m a.s.l.) in the Yukon Territory, Canada, has been analyzed continuously for stable isotopes, pH and liquid electrolytic conductivity. Specific sections of the core have been analyzed for total β-activity (0-22 m) and trace ion concentrations (across major volcanic events) in order to date the core. In the lower half of the core, nitrate and some other ionic species are used to identify annual increments except between AD 1693 and AD 1720 and between AD 1729 and AD 1735 where only average annual increments are given. Annual increments were converted to water equivalents, then corrected for ice flow thinning as well as for origin, since a significant net accumulation gradient exists across the borehole site. The time series was subjected to cross correlation analysis, using instrumental data for the last 80 years, and to spectral analyses, using a 250-year sequence

    Research and Development of Automated Eddy Current Testing for Composite Overwrapped Pressure Vessels

    Eddy current testing (ET) was used to scan bare metallic liners used in the fabrication of composite overwrapped pressure vessels (COPVs) for flaws which could result in premature failure of the vessel. The main goal of the project was to make improvements in the areas of scan signal to noise ratio, sensitivity of flaw detection, and estimation of flaw dimensions. Scan settings were optimized resulting in an increased signal to noise ratio. Previously undiscovered flaw indications were observed and investigated. Threshold criteria were determined for the system software's flaw report and estimation of flaw dimensions were brought to an acceptable level of accuracy. Computer algorithms were written to import data for filtering and a numerical derivative filtering algorithm was evaluated
