Study of controlled diffusion stator blading. 1. Aerodynamic and mechanical design report
Pratt & Whitney Aircraft is conducting a test program for NASA in order to demonstrate that a controlled-diffusion stator provides low losses at high loadings and Mach numbers. The technology has shown great promise in wind tunnel tests. Details of the design of the controlled diffusion stator vanes and the multiple-circular-arc rotor blades are presented. The stage, including stator and rotor, was designed to be suitable for the first-stage of an advanced multistage, high-pressure compressor

The successful nucleation of bismuth germanate, B12GeO20 on a high quality seed and the growth of regions of single crystals of the same orientation of the seed are reported. Lead germanate, Pb5Ge3O11 was also identified as a ferroelectric crystal with large electrooptic and nonlinear optic constants. DOI: 10.1080/03004430802352087The number of men in teaching has always been small, particularly in early childhood, but those that do come into teaching usually do so for the same reasons as women, namely enjoyment of working with children, of wanting to teach and wanting to make a difference to children's lives. However, in two separate studies, the authors have shown that on beginning teacher training in 1998, and at the point of leaving the profession in 2005, men and women tend to emphasise different concerns. This article will explore those differences and seek possible explanations for how men's views of teaching might be changing over time.Peer reviewe

Analytical models for high-temperature corrosion of silica refractories in glass-melting furnaces
Corrosion of refractory silica brick used to line the crown of many glass-melting furnaces is a serious problem in furnaces using oxygen-fuel rather than air-fuel mixtures. To better understand and to quantify this process analytical models are utilized to evaluate the importance of four potential rate-limiting processes: a) gas-phase transport of NaOH to the crown surface; b) diffusion of sodium-containing reactants through a liquid product layer that forms on the brick face; c) gas-phase diffusion of NaOH into refractory pores; and d) chemical-kinetic limitations at the silica grain surface. Predictions are compared with reported corrosion rates and product compositions previously determined by post-mortem analysis of refractory samples. It is concluded that corrosion occurs largely by reaction and removal of material from the exposed brick face, rather than by transport of reactants into the porous bricks. The observed presence of corrosion products deep within the brick pores is shown to be consistent with capillary suction of high-viscosity liquid products from the hot face into the interior. The results further suggest that mechanisms (b) and (c) do not substantially limit the rate of corrosion, but that mechanisms (a) and (d) may both be important. Comparison of measurements with equilibrium predictions of corrosion-product composition indicate that the corrosion reactions are likely to be close to equilibrium at the conditions and lifetimes typical of full-scale furnaces, but that significant departures from equilibrium may occur in short-duration tests. Although computed corrosion rates based on mass transport through a gas boundary layer are somewhat greater than those observed, the results are very sensitive to the gas-phase concentration of NaOH and to the refractory temperature, both of which contain significant uncertainties
Coupled-channels analysis of the O+Pb fusion barrier distribution
Analyses using simplified coupled-channels models have been unable to
describe the shape of the previously measured fusion barrier distribution for
the doubly magic O+Pb system. This problem was investigated by
re-measuring the fission excitation function for O+Pb with
improved accuracy and performing more exact coupled-channels calculations,
avoiding the constant-coupling and first-order coupling approximations often
used in simplified analyses. Couplings to the single- and 2-phonon states of
Pb, correctly taking into account the excitation energy and the phonon
character of these states, particle transfers, and the effects of varying the
diffuseness of the nuclear potential, were all explored. However, in contrast
to other recent analyses of precise fusion data, no satisfactory simultaneous
description of the shape of the experimental barrier distribution and the

Analytic Metaphysics versus Naturalized Metaphysics: The Relevance of Applied Ontology
The relevance of analytic metaphysics has come under criticism: Ladyman & Ross, for instance, have suggested do discontinue the field. French & McKenzie have argued in defense of analytic metaphysics that it develops tools that could turn out to be useful for philosophy of physics. In this article, we show first that this heuristic defense of metaphysics can be extended to the scientific field of applied ontology, which uses constructs from analytic metaphysics. Second, we elaborate on a parallel by French & McKenzie between mathematics and metaphysics to show that the whole field of analytic metaphysics, being useful not only for philosophy but also for science, should continue to exist as a largely autonomous field
