The effect of corporate and business strategies on the post-acquisition changes to a management control system: a case study of a successful Brazilian experience

A great number of merger and acquisitions (M&A) have taken place in the last decades, but studies have shown that many of them turn out to be unsuccessful transactions from the perspective of value generation. The post-acquisition management control system (MCS) has been pointed out in the literature as key both for strategy implementation and for the success of these transactions. The objective of the research herein described was to analyse the effect of the corporate and business strategies on the changes to an acquired company’s MCS. The analysis supports three major conclusions: (1) changes to the acquired company’s MCS were derived from the new results-oriented strategy introduced by the acquirer with the intent of turning the acquired company in the world leader in its industry within 10 years; (2) the implementation of such strategy implied modifications in production, financial and quality controls; and (3) there is a strong link between the post-acquisition MCS and the success of the new strategy introduced by the acquirer in the acquired company. The results of this field study expand the knowledge on the topic, contributing to reducing the research gap in the management literature

VIÉS DE CONFIRMAÇÃO NA TOMADA DE DECISÕES DE INOVAÇÃO

Potential innovators need to overcome many challenges. One such challenge is confirmation bias in decision-making. Human evolution has programmed the brain to act quickly in the face of a threat in the environment. In this way, thinking and (instantaneously) acting rationally is almost impossible for most people. This causes several negative effects on decision-making, notably cognitive biases. For example, an entrepreneur who wants to launch a new product on the market tends to convince herself/himself that her/his product is innovative, ignoring evidence to the contrary, this being a confirmation bias. An innovative analysis of the causes and consequences of the confirmation bias in innovation decision-making is the main goal of this article. Potential innovators need to overcome many challenges. COVID-19 symptoms at hospital admission vary with age and sex: results from the ISARIC prospective multinational observational study

Background: The ISARIC prospective multinational observational study is the largest cohort of hospitalized patients with COVID-19. We present relationships of age, sex, and nationality to presenting symptoms. Methods: International, prospective observational study of 60 109 hospitalized symptomatic patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 recruited from 43 countries between 30 January and 3 August 2020. Logistic regression was performed to evaluate relationships of age and sex to published COVID-19 case definitions and the most commonly reported symptoms. Results: ‘Typical’ symptoms of fever (69%), cough (68%) and shortness of breath (66%) were the most commonly reported. 92% of patients experienced at least one of these. Prevalence of typical symptoms was greatest in 30- to 60-year-olds (respectively 80, 79, 69%; at least one 95%). They were reported less frequently in children (≤ 18 years: 69, 48, 23; 85%), older adults (≥ 70 years: 61, 62, 65; 90%), and women (66, 66, 64; 90%; vs. men 71, 70, 67; 93%, each P < 0.001). The most common atypical presentations under 60 years of age were nausea and vomiting and abdominal pain, and over 60 years was confusion. Regression models showed significant differences in symptoms with sex, age and country. Interpretation: This international collaboration has allowed us to report reliable symptom data from the largest cohort of patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19. Adults over 60 and children admitted to hospital with COVID-19 are less likely to present with typical symptoms. Nausea and vomiting are common atypical presentations under 30 years. Confusion is a frequent atypical presentation of COVID-19 in adults over 60 years. Women are less likely to experience typical symptoms than men

<p class="ResumoAbstract"><span lang="EN-US">The aim of this study was to compare the influence of acute static stretching on maximal muscle strength (1RM). The non-probabilistic sample consisted of 30 subjects split into two groups: static stretching (SS= 15) and without stretching group (WS= 15). Muscle strength evaluation (1RM) was conducted with a Dynamometer model 32527pp400 Pound push / pull devices coupled in knee extension (KE) and bench press (BP). The Wilcoxon test for intragroup comparisons and the Kruskal-Wallis test for comparisons between groups (<em>p</em>&lt; 0.05) were selected. There were no significant differences (<em>p</em>&gt; 0.05) between the SS and WS in exercise KE and BP. Therefore, it can be concluded that there was no reduction in the performance of 1RM performing the exercises KE and BP when preceded by static stretching.</span></p
