A set of exactly solvable Ising models with half-odd-integer spin
We present a set of exactly solvable Ising models, with half-odd-integer
spin-S on a square-type lattice including a quartic interaction term in the
Hamiltonian. The particular properties of the mixed lattice, associated with
mixed half-odd-integer spin-(S,1/2) and only nearest-neighbour interaction,
allow us to map this system either onto a purely spin-1/2 lattice or onto a
purely spin-S lattice. By imposing the condition that the mixed
half-odd-integer spin-(S,1/2) lattice must have an exact solution, we found a
set of exact solutions that satisfy the {\it free fermion} condition of the
eight vertex model. The number of solutions for a general half-odd-integer
spin-S is given by . Therefore we conclude that this transformation is
equivalent to a simple spin transformation which is independent of the
coordination number
Femtosecond photonic viral inactivation probed using solid-state nanopores
We report on detection of virus inactivation using femtosecond laser radiation by measuring the
conductance of a solid state nanopore designed for detecting single particles. Conventional methods
of assaying for viral inactivation based on plaque forming assays require 24–48 h for bacterial growth.
Nanopore conductance measurements provide information on morphological changes at a single
virion level. We show that analysis of a time series of nanopore conductance can quantify the detection
of inactivation, requiring only a few minutes from collection to analysis. Morphological changes were
verified by dynamic light scattering. Statistical analysis maximizing the information entropy provides
a measure of the log reduction value. This work provides a rapid method for assaying viral inactivation
with femtosecond lasers using solid-state nanopores.First author draf
The spatial distribution of leprosy in four villages in Bangladesh: An observational study
BACKGROUND: There is a higher case-detection rate for leprosy among spatially proximate contacts such as household members and neighbors. Spatial information regarding the clustering of leprosy can be used to improve intervention strategies. Identifying high-risk areas within villages around known cases can be helpful in finding new cases. METHODS: Using geographic information systems, we created digital maps of four villages in a highly endemic area in northwest Bangladesh. The villages were surveyed three times over four years. The spatial pattern of the compounds--a small group of houses--was analyzed, and we looked for spatial clusters of leprosy cases. RESULTS: The four villages had a total population of 4,123. There were 14 previously treated patients and we identified 19 new leprosy patients during the observation period. However, we found no spatial clusters with a probability significantly different from the null hypothesis of random occurrence. CONCLUSION: Spatial analysis at the microlevel of villages in highly endemic areas does not appear to be useful for identifying clusters of patients. The search for clustering should be extended to a higher aggregation level, such as the subdistrict or regional level. Additionally, in highly endemic areas, it appears to be more effective to target complete villages for contact tracing, rather than narrowly defined contact groups such as households
Generalized Transformation for Decorated Spin Models
The paper discusses the transformation of decorated Ising models into an
effective \textit{undecorated} spin models, using the most general Hamiltonian
for interacting Ising models including a long range and high order
interactions. The inverse of a Vandermonde matrix with equidistant nodes
is used to obtain an analytical expression of the transformation. This
kind of transformation is very useful to obtain the partition function of
decorated systems. The method presented by Fisher is also extended, in order to
obtain the correlation functions of the decorated Ising models transforming
into an effective undecorated Ising models. We apply this transformation to a
particular mixed spin-(1/2,1) and (1/2,2) square lattice with only nearest site
interaction. This model could be transformed into an effective uniform spin-
square lattice with nearest and next-nearest interaction, furthermore the
effective Hamiltonian also include combinations of three-body and four-body
interactions, particularly we considered spin 1 and 2.Comment: 16 pages, 4 figure
Inbreeding levels in Northeast Brazil: Strategies for the prospecting of new genetic disorders
A new autosomal recessive genetic condition, the SPOAN syndrome (an acronym for spastic paraplegia, optic atrophy and neuropathy syndrome), was recently discovered in an isolated region of the State of Rio Grande do Norte in Northeast Brazil, in a population that was identified by the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) as belonging to the Brazilian communities with the highest rates of “deficiencies” (Neri, 2003), a term used to describe diseases, malformations, and handicaps in general. This prompted us to conduct a study of consanguinity levels in five of its municipal districts by directly interviewing their inhabitants. Information on 7,639 couples (corresponding to about 40% of the whole population of the studied districts) was obtained. The research disclosed the existence of very high frequencies of consanguineous marriages, which varied from about 9% to 32%, suggesting the presence of a direct association between genetic diseases such as the SPOAN syndrome, genetic drift and inbreeding levels. This fact calls for the introduction of educational programs for the local populations, as well as for further studies aiming to identify and characterize other genetic conditions. Epidemiological strategies developed to collect inbreeding data, with the collaboration of health systems available in the region, might be very successful in the prospecting of genetic disorders
A heuristic approach for new-item cold start problem in recommendation of micro open education resources
© Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2018. The recommendation of micro Open Education Resources (OERs) suffers from the new-item cold start problem because little is known about the continuously published micro OERs. This paper provides a heuristic approach to inserting newly published micro OERs into established learning paths, to enhance the possibilities of new items to be discovered and appear in the recommendation lists. It considers the accumulation and attenuation of user interests and conform with the demand of fast response in online computation. Performance of this approach has been proved by empirical studies
Conjugation with L, L-diphenylalanine Self-Assemblies Enhances In Vitro Antitumor Activity of Phthalocyanine Photosensitizer
We present the synthesis and characterization of new peptide conjugates obtained by hierarchical co-assembly of L,L-diphenylalanine (FF) and zinc phthalocyanine complexes (ZnPc) in water. Self-assembly capabilities under defined conditions were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, and photophysical properties were evaluated using UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. AFM observations demonstrated that these ZnPcs form different highly ordered arrays on the crystalline faces of the FF microplates and that surface roughness significantly changes with the presence of differently substituted phthalocyanine units. XRD assays showed that the overall molecular packing of the conjugates is organized according to a hexagonal symmetry, with ZnPcs hosted in the interstices of the peptide phase. In vitro photodynamic studies were conducted on human breast cancer MCF-7 cells to investigate both cellular uptake and cytotoxicity. It was shown that FF self-assemblies are not toxicity and enhance accumulation of ZnPc in MCF-7 cells, improving apoptotic cell death upon irradiation. Our findings demonstrate enhancement of ZnPc antitumor efficiency by FF conjugates and a proof-of-concept for new photosensitizer carriers based on peptide conjugates
Palynofacies classification of submarine fan depositional environments: Outcrop examples from the Marnoso-Arenacea Formation, Italy
Basin floor fans contain some of the largest deep-water hydrocarbon accumulations discovered, however they also demonstrate extremely complex stratigraphic architecture, understanding of which is crucial for maximum recovery. Here we develop a new method, based upon palynofacies analysis, for the distinction of the different depositional environments that are commonly associated with basin floor fans. Previous studies and our sedimentological analysis allow good confidence in the discrimination of the different depositional environments of the outcropping Marnoso-Arenacea Formation fan system. One hundred and thirty-five samples were collected from mudstones in conjunction with sedimentary logging of 871 m of outcrops. Six lithofacies associations are described and interpreted to represent lobe axis, lobe fringe, fan fringe, contained interlobe, basin plain, and starved high depositional sub-environments. Palynofacies of these elements demonstrate turbidites to be rich in terrestrial organic matter, with sixteen categories of matter recognised. The abundances and proportions of particles varies between sub-environments, with lobe axis deposits containing the largest, densest particles, with a transition to ever smaller and lighter particles moving toward the basin plain. Fuzzy C-means statistical analysis was used to explore this trend. Distribution of organic matter is not random, but is dominated by hydrodynamic sorting and sequential fall-out of particles as turbidity currents passed across the basin. This allows a palynofacies classification scheme to be constructed to assist the identification of depositional environments of submarine fans, which may be combined with subsurface data to assist reservoir characterisation
Effects of Elsholtzia splendens and Cirsium japonicum on premenstrual syndrome
Premenstrual syndrome is a common chronic disorder in most women of reproductive age. The main symptoms are depression, anxiety, tension, feeling out of control, and mastalgia. In premenstrual syndrome, the effects of aromatic edible Elsholtzia splendens and Cirsium japonicum were investigated for over 3 months in 30 women participants in their twenties. In the Elsholtzia splendens capsule treated group, scores of depression and anxiety were significantly lower than those in the Cirsium japonicum capsule treated group. Moreover, instability of the premenstrual assessment form was significantly decreased in the Elsholtzia splendens capsule treated group. Our results suggest that Elsholtzia splendens could be an effective plant material in relieving symptoms of premenstrual syndrome
