Background: In type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) management, enhancing health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is as important as good metabolic control and prevention of secondary complications. This study aims to evaluate possible regional differences in HRQoL, demographic features and clinical characteristics of patients with T1DM in Brazil, a country of continental proportions, as well as investigate which variables could influence the HRQoL of these individuals and contribute to these regional disparities. Methods: This was a retrospective, cross-sectional, multicenter study performed by the Brazilian Type 1 Diabetes Study Group (BrazDiab1SG), by analyzing EuroQol scores from 3005 participants with T1DM, in 28 public clinics, among all geographical regions of Brazil. Data on demography, economic status, chronic complications, glycemic control and lipid profile were also collected. Results: We have found that the North-Northeast region presents a higher index in the assessment of the overall health status (EQ-VAS) compared to the Southeast (74.6 ± 30 and 70.4 ± 19, respectively; p < 0.05). In addition, North- Northeast presented a lower frequency of self-reported anxiety-depression compared to all regions of the country (North-Northeast: 1.53 ± 0.6; Southeast: 1.65 ± 0.7; South: 1.72 ± 0.7; Midwest: 1.67 ± 0.7; p < 0.05). These findings could not be entirely explained by the HbA1c levels or the other variables examined. Conclusions: Our study points to the existence of additional factors not yet evaluated that could be determinant in the HRQoL of people with T1DM and contribute to these regional disparities

The purpose of this study was to analyze the influence of a set of additives in mortar coating, using mixed lime mortar as reference. To achieve this objective an adequate proportion of mortar was dosed, using natural sand, CP II-F 32 cement and CH I hydraulic lime, via SANTOS (2014) methodology. Afterwards, based on the hydraulic lime proportion the additive mortar proportion was dosed, adding different proportions of additives: water retainer (R), air entraining agent (I) and plasticizer (P), as established by SIMPLEX methodology. With the appropriate proportions some tests were conducted: consistency, density in the fresh and hardened state, water retention, modulus of elasticity, tensile strength in flexion, compression, adherence, water absorption by immersion and by capillarity, porosity, adapted aging test, and analysis of the microstructure through a digital microscope. At the end of this study, it was evidenced that: entrained air and total porosity were directly influenced by the increase of the air entraining agent; the density in fresh and hardned state and open porosity were inversely influenced by the air entraining, and directly by the plasticizer; using only air entraining or plasticizer presented an unsatisfactory adherences result, the highest result were with 50%P + 50%R, being this result as high as the one of mixed mortar; the mechanical resistance were directly influenced by the use of plasticizer; and the cost of materials were directly influenced by water retainer, however it was cheaper than mixed mortars cost of materials. In the end, it was verified the possibility (technical and economical) of replacing the mixed mortar with the additive mortar (50%P + 50%R) as efficiente as the mixed mortar studied

The inhibitory activity of compounds 10–18 was determined against three cancer cell lines using the MTT colorimetric assay. The screening revealed that derivatives 16b and 17b exhibited significant cytotoxic activity against the gastric cancer cell line but was not active against a normal cell line, in contrast to doxorubicin, a standard chemotherapeutic drug in clinical use. Interestingly, no hemolytical activity was observed when the toxicity of 16b and 17b was tested against blood cells. The in silico and in vitro mechanistic evaluation indicated the potential of 16b as a lead for the development of novel anticancer agents against gastric cancer cells

The Neotropical region hosts 4225 freshwater fish species, ranking first among the world's most diverse regions for freshwater fishes. Our NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set is the first to produce a large-scale Neotropical freshwater fish inventory, covering the entire Neotropical region from Mexico and the Caribbean in the north to the southern limits in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. We compiled 185,787 distribution records, with unique georeferenced coordinates, for the 4225 species, represented by occurrence and abundance data. The number of species for the most numerous orders are as follows: Characiformes (1289), Siluriformes (1384), Cichliformes (354), Cyprinodontiformes (245), and Gymnotiformes (135). The most recorded species was the characid Astyanax fasciatus (4696 records). We registered 116,802 distribution records for native species, compared to 1802 distribution records for nonnative species. The main aim of the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set was to make these occurrence and abundance data accessible for international researchers to develop ecological and macroecological studies, from local to regional scales, with focal fish species, families, or orders. We anticipate that the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set will be valuable for studies on a wide range of ecological processes, such as trophic cascades, fishery pressure, the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation, and the impacts of species invasion and climate change.
