Static magneto optical birefringence of New Electric Double Layered Magnetic Fluids

    Get PDF
Magnetic birefringence measurements are performed under a static eld on Electric Double Layered Magnetic Fluids based on copper and zinc ferrite nanostructures. The optical birefringence is related to a single-particle e ect and well described by a Langevin model which includes a lognormal distribution of particles. By the eld-induced birefringence level, these new magnetic fluids are comparable to usual ones, a result which could o er a new way for biological applications

The creation of the Family Health Support Centers (NASF) definitively marks the performance of multidisciplinary teams within the scope of the Unified Health System (SUS). The present study aims to compare the quality of life of non-users and users of NASF through the SF36 generic questionnaire. This is a cross-sectional quantitative study, in which the questionnaires were applied to two groups of thirty users, divided between participants and non-participants of NASF activities, in a medium-sized municipality of Minas Gerais. The results showed that only in the domain Limitation by Physical Aspects (LF) significant differences were found for p <0,001. It’s concluded that the NASF should direct its multidisciplinary activities so that all the aspects that interfere in the quality of life the individuals have positive impact.

Hydrogels and cell based therapies in spinal cord injury regeneration

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a central nervous system- (CNS-) related disorder for which there is yet no successful treatment. Within the past several years, cell-based therapies have been explored for SCI repair, including the use of pluripotent human stem cells, and a number of adult-derived stem and mature cells such as mesenchymal stem cells, olfactory ensheathing cells, and Schwann cells. Although promising, cell transplantation is often overturned by the poor cell survival in the treatment of spinal cord injuries. Alternatively, the therapeutic role of different cells has been used in tissue engineering approaches by engrafting cells with biomaterials. The latter have the advantages of physically mimicking the CNS tissue, while promoting a more permissive environment for cell survival, growth, and differentiation. The roles of both cell- and biomaterial-based therapies as single therapeutic approaches for SCI repair will be discussed in this review. Moreover, as the multifactorial inhibitory environment of a SCI suggests that combinatorial approaches would be more effective, the importance of using biomaterials as cell carriers will be herein highlighted, as well as the recent advances and achievements of these promising tools for neural tissue regeneration. The authors would like to acknowledge the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (Grant no. Remote boundary-scan testing through micro-webservers

The IEEE 1149.1 standard test access port and boundary-scan architecture [1] was approved in1990 in response to the need for coping with shrinking sizes due to advanced packaging andmounting technologies, and also with the increasing complexity of modern microelectronicdevices. Boundary-scan test (BST) was quickly adopted by all industry sectors, including testequipment manufacturers, CAD tool providers, and microcircuit designers and manufacturers. Many tools and integrated solutions are now available on the market to support BST, but theyare essentially dedicated to production test environments. The work presented in this documentaddresses the development of a network of low-cost distributed BST controllers, based onmicro-webserver boards

Flies as possible vectors of inflammatory trachoma transmission in a Brazilian municipality

Trachoma is a keratoconjunctivitis caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, considered an important leading cause of preventable blindness in the world. This study aimed at verifying if flies can be the vectors for trachoma in our municipality. Flies were assessed in the households of children diagnosed with inflammatory trachoma at the municipality of Botucatu, Sao Paulo State, Brazil. Fly traps were placed in the backyard of the houses during 24 h, in each of the four weather seasons, over a period of one year. The collected dipterans were taxonomically classified and the presence of Chlamydia trachomatis in the flies was evidenced by using the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). During the studied period, 2,188 flies were collected, mainly during the summer and the spring. The most common identified fly was Musca domestica. All fly samples were negative for Chlamydia trachomatis but several other different bacteria were identified in these flies. The authors concluded that flies are probably not the vectors for trachoma in the studied area. Further studies should be conducted to evaluate other possible factors responsible for the maintenance of the disease in our environment

Introduction: Dental composites must have sufficient physical and mechanical properties in order to withstand the challenging scenario found in oral cavity. Objective: this article aims to evaluate the mechanical resistance of two nanoparticulate resins: conventional and bulk-fill. Material and methods: 40 specimens were made according the terms of ADA no 27 and divided into 2 groups containing 20 samples for each group, G1 (Bulk-Fill) and G2 (Z350). Then, laboratory tests were performed to assess the resistance to diametrical traction and flexural resistance in a universal testing machine Instron 5667. Results: For the resistance to diametrical traction, the Bulk-Fill group presented higher values compared to the Z350 (p <0.05). As for flexural strength, resins showed similar mechanical behavior (p = 0.159). Conclusion: The bulk-fill resin demonstrated greater mechanical resistance when compared to conventional resin. Keywords: Composite resins. Dental Materials. Tensile Strength. Quanto à resistência flexural as resinas apresentaram comportamento mecânico semelhante (p=0,159). Nessa perspectiva, a resina bulk-fill demonstrou maior resistência mecânica quando comparada à resina convencional. Palavras-chave: Resinas compostas. Materiais Dentários. Resistência à Tração
