Regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) involves inducing water stress during specific fruit growth phases by irrigating at less than full evapotranspiration. The objectives of this research were to study the effects of RDI perfomed at stage II of fruit growth and postharvest, on productivity of clingstone peaches, fruit quality as well as photosynthetic rate and midday leaf water potential. The research was conducted in a commercial clingstone peach (Prunus persica L. Batch cv. A-37) orchard in Greece. Trees were irrigated by means of microsprinklers and their frequency was determined using local meteorological station data and the FAO 56 Pennman-Monteith method. Photosynthetic rate was measured by a portable infrared gas analyzer. Midday leaf water potential was measured by the pressure chamber technique. During the years 2005 and 2006, the treatment RDII with irrigation applied at growth stage II of the peach tree did not affect productivity, fresh and dry mass of fruits. RDII reduced preharvest fruit drop in comparison to the control. RDII as well as the combined treatment RDII plus RDIP with irrigation applied at postharvest, at both years reduced shoot length of the vigorous shoots inside the canopy. RDII in comparison to the control increased the soluble solids content of the fruits and the ratio soluble solids/acidity. However it did not affect fruit acidity and fruit firmness. RDII as well as RDII plus RDIP in 2006 increased 'double' fruits and fruits with open cavity in comparison to the control and RDIP. Water savings were considerable and associated with the climatic conditions of each year.

Koristili smo sljedeće MeSH uvjete; aneurizma abdominalne aorte; incizijska hernija; ingvinalna hernija; incizijska hernija i radiologija, zatvaranje abdominalnih rana, također je korištena „snow-falling“ potraga s navedenim ključnim riječima. Kao mjesto uboda odaberite aponeurozu samo 5 do 8 mm od ruba rane, u razmaku 4 do 5 mm.Objectives: To study the relation of incisional hernias after abdominal aortic surgery and to study the recommendations for prevention of incisional hernias in general. Methods: An extensive search in Pub-Med was conducted. We used the following MeSH terms; abdominal aortic aneurysm; incisional hernia; inguinal hernia; incisional hernia and radiology, abdominal wound closure, we also did a “snow-falling” search with the above terms. Results: Still today there is not unanimity concerning the relation of aortic or aortoiliac pathology and incisional or inguinal hernias although the majority of studies suggest that there is a possible increase in the prevalence of incisional hernias after aortic surgery. Conclusions: In order to lessen the possibilities of incisional hernias suture length to wound length ration should be more that 4:1. Sutures should be tied without excessive tension and to use either a slowly absorbable or nonabsorbable suture material. Use a suture USP 2/0 mounted on a small needle. Place stitches in the aponeurosis only and 5 to 8mm from the wound edge and 4 to 5 mm apart

Tau protein is essential for stress-induced brain pathology

Exposure to chronic stress is frequently accompanied by cognitive and affective disorders in association with neurostructural adaptations. Chronic stress was previously shown to trigger Alzheimer's-like neuropathology, which is characterized by Tau hyper-phosphorylation and missorting into dendritic spines followed by memory deficits. Here, we demonstrate that stress-driven hippocampal deficits in wild-type mice are accompanied by synaptic missorting of Tau and enhanced Fyn/GluN2B-driven synaptic signaling. In contrast, mice lacking Tau [Tau knockout (Tau-KO) mice] do not exhibit stress-induced pathological behaviors and atrophy of hippocampal dendrites or deficits of hippocampal connectivity. These findings implicate Tau as an essential mediator of the adverse effects of stress on brain structure and function. We thank Dr. Peter Davies (Albert Einstein College) for the PHF1 antibody. Clinical and preclinical studies firmly support the involvement of the inflammation in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Despite acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AChEI) being widely used in AD patients, there is no conclusive evidence about their impact on the inflammatory response.Funding was received from a program co-financed by the European Social Fund and the Greek State (GSRT LS5-3808)info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Respiratory eukaryotic virome expansion and bacteriophage deficiency characterize childhood asthma

Asthma development and exacerbation is linked to respiratory virus infections. There is limited information regarding the presence of viruses during non-exacerbation/infection periods. We investigated the nasopharyngeal/nasal virome during a period of asymptomatic state, in a subset of 21 healthy and 35 asthmatic preschool children from the Predicta cohort. Using metagenomics, we described the virome ecology and the cross-species interactions within the microbiome. The virome was dominated by eukaryotic viruses, while prokaryotic viruses (bacteriophages) were independently observed with low abundance. Rhinovirus B species consistently dominated the virome in asthma. Anelloviridae were the most abundant and rich family in both health and asthma. However, their richness and alpha diversity were increased in asthma, along with the co-occurrence of different Anellovirus genera. Bacteriophages were richer and more diverse in healthy individuals. Unsupervised clustering identified three virome profiles that were correlated to asthma severity and control and were independent of treatment, suggesting a link between the respiratory virome and asthma. Finally, we observed different cross-species ecological associations in the healthy versus the asthmatic virus-bacterial interactome, and an expanded interactome of eukaryotic viruses in asthma. Upper respiratory virome "dysbiosis" appears to be a novel feature of pre-school asthma during asymptomatic/non-infectious states and merits further investigation

Endolysosomal degradation of Tau and its role in glucocorticoid-driven hippocampal malfunction

Emerging studies implicate Tau as an essential mediator of neuronal atrophy and cognitive impairment in Alzheimer's disease (AD), yet the factors that precipitate Tau dysfunction in AD are poorly understood. Chronic environmental stress and elevated glucocorticoids (GC), the major stress hormones, are associated with increased risk of AD and have been shown to trigger intracellular Tau accumulation and downstream Tau-dependent neuronal dysfunction. However, the mechanisms through which stress and GC disrupt Tau clearance and degradation in neurons remain unclear. Here, we demonstrate that Tau undergoes degradation via endolysosomal sorting in a pathway requiring the small GTPase Rab35 and the endosomal sorting complex required for transport (ESCRT) machinery. Furthermore, we find that GC impair Tau degradation by decreasing Rab35 levels, and that AAV-mediated expression of Rab35 in the hippocampus rescues GC-induced Tau accumulation and related neurostructural deficits. These studies indicate that the Rab35/ESCRT pathway is essential for Tau clearance and part of the mechanism through which GC precipitate brain pathology.work was supported by NIH grants R01NS080967and R21MH 104803 to C.L.W., Portuguese Foundation for Science & Technology (FCT) PhD fellowships to J. Get PDF
[EN] We present an optimized differential receiver in silicon with a minimized footprint and balanced zero-biased Ge photodiodes. The receiver integrates a delay-line with a 2 ¿ 4 multimode interferometer 90° hybrid and two balanced photodiodes for differential quadrature phase-shift keying demodulation. Two receivers are tested, for 10 and 20 Gb/s operation, and well opened eye-diagrams and symbol constellations are obtained with error vector magnitude values as low as 12.5% and 19.57%, respectively. The results confirm the potential of integrated silicon receivers to become key building blocks for future passive optical access networks based on advanced modulation formats. © 1989-2012 IEEE.This work was supported in part by the European Community’s Seventh Framework Program under Grant 224312 HELIOS.Aamer, M.; Sotiropoulos, N.; Brimont, ACJ.; Fedeli, J.; Marris-Morini, D.; Cassan, E.; Vivien, L....
