    Interstellar polarization and grain alignment: the role of iron and silicon

    We compiled the polarimetric data for a sample of lines of sight with known abundances of Mg, Si, and Fe. We correlated the degree of interstellar polarization PP and polarization efficiency (the ratio of PP to the colour excess E(BV)E(B-V) or extinction AVA_V) with dust phase abundances. We detect an anticorrelation between PP and the dust phase abundance of iron in non silicate - containing grains ]_\rm d, a correlation between PP and the abundance of Si, and no correlation between P/E(BV)P/E(B-V) or P/AVP/A_V and dust phase abundances. These findings can be explained if mainly the silicate grains aligned by the radiative mechanism are responsible for the observed interstellar linear polarization.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysic

    Outcome and mortality of hospital admission with COVID-19 for individuals with parkinsonian syndromes

    ObjectiveTo evaluate features of Parkinson’s disease (PD) and atypical Parkinson’s syndromes (APS) associated with poor outcome and mortality in people with COVID-19 in a hospital setting.BackgroundPrevious studies have demonstrated increased mortality of COVID-19 in people with PD. However, it is not known whether this is associated with disease-related factors (eg autonomic dysfunc- tion, dysphagia).MethodsAn online survey tool captured anonymised patient data from hospital admission records of people with PD and APS who tested positive for COVID-19 between February 2020 and July 2021. We will use Cox proportional hazards and linear regression models to evaluate which characteristics are associ- ated with mortality, increased care requirement and more severe COVID-19 infection. Models will be adjusted for known associations with poor outcome, such as co-morbidities, age and sex.ResultsData were collected from 556 admissions from 21 UK sites: 66.2% male; median (IQR) age 80 (11) years; median disease duration 5 (7) years. 19.2% were asymptomatic, 28.8% had mild symptoms and 52.5% required respiratory support. 38.3% died within 4 weeks of a positive COVID-19 test. Preliminary Kaplan-Meier curves suggest that co-existing dementia, marked motor fluctuations and more advanced Hoehn and Yahr stage may be associated with 28-day mortality. Full statistical analysis is in progress.ConclusionsIdentification of Parkinson’s features associated with poor in-hospital COVID-19 outcome will allow a more informed discussion relating to individual COVID-19 risk.</jats:sec

At present, there is emerging trend to use Fluorescence spectroscopy as a diagnostic as well as research tool in many fields of medical sciences.     Stromal cells differentially regulate neutrophil and lymphocyte recruitment through the endothelium

    Stromal fibroblasts modify the initial recruitment of leucocytes by endothelial cells (EC), but their effects on subsequent transendothelial migration remain unclear. Here, EC and dermal or synovial fibroblasts were cultured on opposite surfaces of 3-lm pore filters and incorporated in static or flow-based migration assays. Fibroblasts had little effect on tumour necrosis factor-a-induced transendothelial migration of neutrophils,but tended to increase the efficiency of migration away from the endothelium.Surprisingly, similar close contact between EC and fibroblasts strongly reduced lymphocyte migration in static assays, and nearly abolished stable lymphocyte adhesion from flow. Fibroblasts did not alter endothelial surface expression of adhesion molecules or messenger RNA for chemokines. Inhibition of attachment did not occur when EC-fibroblast contact was restricted by using 04-lm pore filters, but under these conditions pre-treatment with heparinase partially inhibited adhesion. In the 3-lm pore co-cultures, inhibition of metalloproteinase activity partially recovered lymphocyte adhesion, but addition of CXCL12 (SDF-1a) to the endothelial surface did not. Hence, the ability of EC to present activating chemokines for lymphocytes may have been enzymatically inhibited by direct contact with fibroblasts. To avoid contact, we cultured EC and fibroblasts on separate 3-lm pore filters one above the other. Here,fibroblasts promoted the transendothelial migration of lymphocytes. Fibroblasts generate CXCL12, but blockade of CXCL12 receptor had no effect on lymphocyte migration. While stromal cells can provide signal(s)promoting leucocyte migration away from the sub-endothelial space,direct cell contact (which might occur in damaged tissue) may cause disruption of chemokine signalling, specifically inhibiting lymphocyte rather than neutrophil recruitment

    Effect of skin tone on the accuracy of the estimation of arterial oxygen saturation by pulse oximetry: a systematic review

    BACKGROUND: Pulse oximetry-derived oxygen saturation (SpO2) is an estimate of true arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2). The aim of this review was to evaluate available evidence determining the effect of skin tone on the ability of pulse oximeters to accurately estimate SaO2. METHODS: Published literature was screened to identify clinical and non-clinical studies enrolling adults and children when SpO2 was compared with a paired co-oximetry SaO2 value. We searched literature databases from their inception to March 20, 2023. Risk of bias (RoB) was assessed using the QUADAS-2 tool. Certainty of assessment was evaluated using the GRADE tool. RESULTS: Forty-four studies were selected reporting on at least 222 644 participants (6121 of whom were children) and 733 722 paired SpO2-SaO2 measurements. Methodologies included laboratory studies, prospective clinical, and retrospective clinical studies. A high RoB was detected in 64% of studies and there was considerable heterogeneity in study design, data analysis, and reporting metrics. Only 11 (25%) studies measured skin tone in 2353 (1.1%) participants; the remainder reported participant ethnicity: 68 930 (31.0%) participants were of non-White ethnicity or had non-light skin tones. The majority of studies reported overestimation of SaO2 by pulse oximetry in participants with darker skin tones or from ethnicities assumed to have darker skin tones. Several studies reported no inaccuracy related to skin tone. Meta-analysis of the data was not possible. CONCLUSIONS: Pulse oximetry can overestimate true SaO2 in people with darker skin tones. The clinical relevance of this bias remains unclear, but its magnitude is likely to be greater when SaO2 is lower.     Measurements of the production of high transverse momentum direct photons by a 515 GeV/c piminus beam and 530 and 800 GeV/c proton beams in interactions with beryllium and hydrogen targets are presented. The data span the kinematic ranges of 3.5 < p_T < 12 GeV/c in transverse momentum and 1.5 units in rapidity.     Magnetic Fields via Polarimetry: Progress of Grain Alignment Theory

    Most astrophysical systems, e.g. stellar winds, the diffuse interstellar medium, molecular clouds, are magnetized with magnetic fields that influence almost all of their properties. One of the most informative techniques of magnetic field studies is based on the use of starlight polarization and polarized emission arising from aligned dust. How reliable the interpretation of the polarization maps in terms of magnetic fields is the issue that the grain alignment theory addresses. Although grain alignment is a problem of half a century standing, recent progress achieved in the field makes us believe that we are approaching the solution of this mystery. I review basic physical processes involved in grain alignment and discuss the niches for different alignment mechanisms. I show why mechanisms that were favored for decades do not look so promising right now, while the radiative torque mechanism ignored for more than 20 years looks so attractive. I define the observational tests and outline the circumstances when grain alignment theory predicts that new yet untapped information of magnetic field structure is available through polarimetry.     UV Circular Polarisation in Star Formation Regions : The Origin of Homochirality?

    Ultraviolet circularly polarised light has been suggested as the initial cause of the homochirality of organic molecules in terrestrial organisms, via enantiomeric selection of prebiotic molecules by asymmetric photolysis. We present a theoretical investigation of mechanisms by which ultraviolet circular polarisation may be produced in star formation regions. In the scenarios considered here, light scattering produces only a small percentage of net circular polarisation at any point in space, due to the forward throwing nature of the phase function in the ultraviolet. By contrast, dichroic extinction can produce a fairly high percentage of net circular polarisation (∼10%) and may therefore play a key role in producing an enantiomeric excessPeer reviewe

    Evidence for Parton kT Effects in High pT Particle Production

    Inclusive pizero and direct-photon cross sections in the kinematic range 3.5 < pT < 12 GeV/c with central rapidities are presented for 530 and 800 GeV/c proton beams and a 515 GeV/c pi- beam incident on beryllium targets. Current Next-to-Leading-Order perturbative QCD calculations fail to adequately describe the data for conventional choices of scales. Kinematic distributions from these hard scattering events provide evidence that the interacting partons carry significant initial-state parton transverse momentum (kT). Incorporating these kT effects phenomenologically greatly improves the agreement between calculations and the measured cross sections.Comment: 11 pages including 6 pages of figures with caption
