    Cyr61 Expression is associated with prognosis in patients with colorectal cancer

    BACKGROUND: Cysteine-rich 61 (Cyr61), a member of the CCN protein family, possesses diverse functionality in cellular processes such as adhesion, migration, proliferation, and survival. Cyr61 can also function as an oncogene or a tumour suppressor, depending on the origin of the cancer. Only a few studies have reported Cyr61 expression in colorectal cancer. In this study, we assessed the Cyr61 expression in 251 colorectal cancers with clinical follow up. METHODS: We examined Cyr61 expression in 6 colorectal cancer cell lines (HT29, Colo205, Lovo, HCT116, SW480, SW620) and 20 sets of paired normal and colorectal cancer tissues by western blot. To validate the association of Cyr61 expression with clinicopathological parameters, we assessed Cyr61 expression using tissue microarray analysis of primary colorectal cancer by immunohistochemical analysis. RESULTS: We verified that all of the cancer cell lines expressed Cyr61; 2 cell lines (HT29 and Colo205) demonstrated Cyr61 expression to a slight extent, while 4 cell lines (Lovo, HCT116, SW480, SW620) demonstrated greater Cyr61 expression than HT29 and Colo205 cell lines. Among the 20 cases of paired normal and tumour tissues, greater Cyr61 expression was observed in 16 (80%) tumour tissues than in normal tissues. Furthermore, 157 out of 251 cases (62.5%) of colorectal cancer examined in this study displayed strong Cyr61 expression. Cyr61 expression was found to be associated with pN (p = 0.018). Moreover, Cyr61 expression was associated with statistically significant cancer-specific mortality (p = 0.029). The duration of survival was significantly lesser in patients with Cyr61 high expression than in patients with Cyr61 low expression (p = 0.001). These results suggest that Cyr61 expression plays several important roles in carcinogenesis and may also be a good prognostic marker for colorectal cancer. CONCLUSIONS: Our data confirmed that Cyr61 was expressed in colorectal cancers and the expression was correlated with worse prognosis of colorectal cancers

    Lung function, coronary artery calcification, and metabolic syndrome in 4905 Korean males

    SummaryBackgroundImpaired lung function is an independent predictor of cardiovascular mortality. We assessed the relationships of lung function with insulin resistance (IR), metabolic syndrome (MetS), systemic inflammation and coronary artery calcification score (CACS) measured by computed tomography (CT) scan an indicator of coronary atherosclerosis.MethodsWe identified 4905 adult male patients of the Health Promotion Center in Samsung Medical Center between March 2005 and February 2008 and retrospectively reviewed the following data for these patients: pulmonary function, CT-measured CACS, anthropometric measurement, fasting glucose, insulin, lipid profiles, serum C-reactive protein (CRP) and homeostatic model assessment (HOMA-IR). MetS was defined according to the AHA/NHLBI criteria.ResultsWhen the subjects were divided into four groups according to quartiles of FVC or FEV1 (% pred), serum CRP level, HOMA-IR, prevalence of MetS and CACS significantly increased as the FVC or FEV1 (% pred) decreased. The odds ratios (ORs) for MetS in the lowest quartiles of FVC and FEV1 (% pred) were 1.85 (95% CI, 1.49–2.30; p<0.001) and 1.47 (95% CI, 1.20–1.81; p<0.001) respectively. The ORs for the presence of coronary artery calcification in the lowest quartiles of FVC and FEV1 (% pred) were 1.31 (95% CI, 1.09–1.58; p=0.004) and 1.22 (95% CI, 1.02–1.46; p=0.029) respectively. Obesity, CRP, HOMA-IR, and the presence of coronary artery calcium were independent risk predictors for impaired lung function.ConclusionMetabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, coronary atherosclerosis, and systemic inflammation are closely related to the impaired lung function

    The performance of bio-chemical sensing devices has been greatly improved by the development of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) based sensors. Advancements in micro- and nano-fabrication technologies have led to a variety of structures in SPR sensing systems being proposed. In this review, SPR sensors (from typical Kretschmann prism configurations to fiber sensor schemes) with micro- or nano-structures for local light field enhancement, extraordinary optical transmission, interference of surface plasmon waves, plasmonic cavities, etc. are discussed. We summarize and compare their performances and present guidelines for the design of SPR sensors

    Changes in Clinical and Legal Autopsy Rates in Korea from 2001 to 2015

    Background: The autopsy is the medical examination of a deceased person that mainly provides information on the cause and manner of death. Two types are conducted in Korea: clinical and legal, depending on its purpose. Despite this procedure&apos;s importance, autopsy rates have been decreasing worldwide. The aim of this study was to determine the nationwide autopsy rate in Korea and compare it with that in other countries. Methods: We collected data of autopsies performed between 2001 and 2015 by searching previously published literature on autopsy statistics and by requesting data from the relevant institutions. We calculated the autopsy rate by using mortality data from Statistics Korea; furthermore, we investigated the type of autopsy performed by institution as well as by geographical region. Results: The total autopsy rate in Korea increased from 2.16% in 2001 to 2.60% in 2015. In terms of autopsy types, however, clinical autopsy rates decreased from 0.17% in 2001 to 0.03% in 2015, while legal autopsy rates increased from 1.99% to 2.57% during the same period. Moreover, the clinical autopsy rate tended to decrease throughout the period, while the legal autopsy rate fluctuated between 2001 and 2010 but steadily increased thereafter. Conclusion: The autopsy rate in Korea is lower compared to that of the advanced countries. These findings implicate the need for nationwide policy to promote both clinical and legal autopsy, which remain crucial parts of medical science and public health.Y

    Titrating the correction angle in modified Harada-Ito procedure in over 15 degree extorsion

    The modified Harada-Ito procedure is known to have excyclotropia correction effect of about 5 to 10 degrees in a unilateral surgery. Although Metz and Lerner proposed adjustable technique, it is based on patients' subjective reports in the adjustment session. Here we propose simple calculation formula to titrate the correction angle of modified Harada-Ito procedure. Furthermore, by resecting the superior oblique tendon, we could achieve correction of more than 15-degree extorsion

    Re-orienting narratives of moral injury towards positive development: The experiences of emerging adults with child welfare histories

    This paper is the second in a series of papers from a mixed methods study examining moral injury in childhood and adolescence as described by emerging adults with histories of child welfare involvement. This paper focuses on the ways emerging adults may alleviate their moral injury, grow and develop. Twenty -eight emerging adults (18–26 years) who reported exposure to morally injurious events during childhood or adolescence on a modified version of the Moral Injury Events Scale (MIES; Nash et al., 2013) participated in life story interviews. Life story analyses of psychosocial contexts considered resiliency, especially any re-orientation of participants’ narratives of moral injury away from the anomie, guilt, shame, and rage characteristic of moral injury, and towards themes such as hope, forgiveness, and gratitude. In addition, psychosocial-spiritual contexts that may support these shifts in meaning were explored through thematic analyses. Findings indicate that supportive relationships, especially with caring adults, engagement with spirituality, and access to prosocial activities provide foster youth with opportunities to re-orient their moral injury narratives, and provide a foundation on which to build towards recovery. Implications for policy, practice and research are discussed

    Neural diseases including injury by endogenous factors, traumatic brain injury, and degenerative neural injury are eventually due to reactive oxygen species (ROS). Thus ROS generation in neural tissues is a hallmark feature of numerous forms of neural diseases. Neural degeneration and the neural damage process is complex, involving a vast array of tissue structure, transcriptional/translational, electrochemical, metabolic, and functional events within the intact neighbors surrounding injured neural tissues. During aging, multiple changes involving physical, chemical, and biochemical processes occur from the molecular to the morphological levels in neural tissues. Among many recommended therapeutic candidates, melatonin also plays a role in protecting the nervous system from anti-inflammation and efficiently safeguards neuronal cells via antioxidants and other endogenous/exogenous beneficial factors. Therefore, given the wide range of mechanisms responsible for neuronal damage, multi-action drugs or therapies for the treatment of neural injury that make use of two or more agents and target several pathways may have greater efficacy in promoting functional recovery than a single therapy alone
