In this paper the results of an analysis on the beliefs held by basic-education teaching staff regarding bullying are analyzed; to carry out the analysis, the three public high schools with the highest incidence of ‘bullying’ by students in Sonora were selected; these results were from a previous study by Valdés et al., in 2013. From these schools, 15 teaching staff (from a total of 45) were interviewed; the remainder answered a survey with open questions. Teachers defined ‘bullying’ as direct violence involving students or other stakeholders. The staff considered the factors associated with bullying as non-systemic; in their opinion, the family and social context were the explanation for the phenomenon. They placed the responsibility for ‘bullying’ on other actors and considered the intervention strategies to be isolated. The conclusion is that the beliefs of teachers regarding ‘bullying’ reduce the scope for action against this problem within the educational environment

Association Between Primary Care Provider Status and Preventive Health Care Among People Who Inject Drugs

Introduction: People who inject drugs (PWID) are at increased risk for preventable, communicable infections, such as hepatitis B. Preventive care, such as hepatitis B vaccination, is often delivered through primary care providers (PCPs). However, PWID may not have access to PCPs and, therefore, may receive preventive care through other sites. We aimed to characterize PCP and preventive care use among PWID in Maine. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study of PWID hospitalized with infections associated with injection drug use in Maine from January 2019 to May 2020. Descriptive analyses were used to identify characteristics of participants, rates of screening, and vaccination of participants with and without PCPs. Logistic regression analyses were performed to explore the relationship between PCP status and delivery of preventive services for PWID. Hepatitis B vaccination was an outcome of interest. Results: Of 101 participants, 68 (67%) had a PCP. Overall rates of hepatitis C (93%) and HIV (85%) screening were high and did not differ based on PCP status. More participants with PCPs had previously received a hepatitis B vaccination (62% of those with PCPs, 33% of those without PCPs; P = .006). Only half of those with PCPs recalled receiving a hepatitis B vaccination through a PCP office. Having a PCP was predictive of having received the hepatitis B vaccination (adjusted odds ratio, 3.59; 95% CI, 1.27-7.58; P = .014). Conclusions: Many PWID in Maine engage with PCPs and preventive care. Results from this study call for enhanced delivery of preventive services and linkages to care for PWID

This research article presents the results of a research that aimed to analyze the motives and expectations of teachers from a public university in northwestern Mexico when participating in the internationalization of the curriculum through Englishmedium instruction (EMI). The analysis is based on the variables such as discipline, seniority, type of contract and frequency of teaching in English. A mixed methodology was employed to analyze quantitative and qualitative data, collected through a digital instrument addressed to a total of 42 teachers who were accredited to teach subjects in English, and 36 complete questionnaires were answered. The results allow us to conclude that most professors from all disciplines agree that their main reason for participating in internationalization through EMI is “to support institutional initiatives”; in contrast, “receiving economic incentives from institutional programs” was a reason for participation with marked differences according to discipline and type of contract. The qualitative analysis concludes the existence of positive conceptions around this type of education, as it is favorable for the university and a possible source of economic remuneration. Although teachers express an intrinsic motivation towards training and teaching in English, the lack of equal economic incentives could be a cause of limited teacher participation. Paraneoplastic Autoimmunity in Thymus Tumors

    Get PDF
Autoimmune phenomena are more frequent in thymic epithelial tumors (TET) than in any other human tumor. Mysthenia gravis (MG) is by far the most common autoimmune disease in thymoma patients. MG is characterized by muscle weakness due to autoantibodies against the acetylcholine receptor (AChR), and CD4 +AChR-specific T cells play a pivotal role for the production of these autoantibodies. About 10% of MG patients have a thymoma and, interestingly, only such thymomas exhibit an MG association that maintains thymuslike morphological and functional features with respect to the homing and differentiation of immature T cells. Since AChR protein is not expressed in thymomas, the specificity of the autoimmunity in thymoma-associated MG is thought to be determined by nonreceptor proteins with AChR epitopes. Such proteins are overexpressed in cortical-type MG-associated thymomas, and medullary thymomas express these proteins at barely detectable levels. Aside from this quantitative difference, the pathogenesis of anti-AChR autoimmunity might be qualitatively different in these thymoma subtypes. Our findings suggest that an antigen-specific abnormal Tcell selection by cortical-type TET may contribute to the pathogenesis of paraneoplastic MG. In contrast, an abnormal (intratumorous) activation of autoreactive T cells may be operative in medullary thymomas

SynBio2Easy – a biologist-friendly tool for batch operations on SBOL designs with Excel inputs

Practical delivery of Findable, Accessible, Reusable and Interoperable principles for research data management requires expertise, time resource, (meta)data standards and formats, software tools and public repositories. The Synthetic Biology Open Language (SBOL2) metadata standard enables FAIR sharing of the designs of synthetic biology constructs, notably in the repository of the SynBioHub platform. Large libraries of such constructs are increasingly easy to produce in practice, for example, in DNA foundries. However, manual curation of the equivalent libraries of designs remains cumbersome for a typical lab researcher, creating a barrier to data sharing. Here, we present a simple tool SynBio2Easy, which streamlines and automates operations on multiple Synthetic Biology Open Language (SBOL) designs using Microsoft Excel® tables as metadata inputs. The tool provides several utilities for manipulation of SBOL documents and interaction with SynBioHub: for example, generation of a library of plasmids based on an original design template, bulk deposition into SynBioHub, or annotation of existing SBOL component definitions with notes and authorship information. The tool was used to generate and deposit a collection of 3661 cyanobacterium Synechocystis plasmids into the public SynBioHub repository. In the process of developing the software and uploading these data, we evaluated some aspects of the SynBioHub platform and SBOL ecosystem, and we discuss proposals for improvement that could benefit the user community. With software such as SynBio2Easy, we aim to deliver a user-driven tooling to make FAIR a reality at all stages of the project lifecycle in synthetic biology research.
