Numerical Construction of LISS Lyapunov Functions under a Small Gain Condition
In the stability analysis of large-scale interconnected systems it is
frequently desirable to be able to determine a decay point of the gain
operator, i.e., a point whose image under the monotone operator is strictly
smaller than the point itself. The set of such decay points plays a crucial
role in checking, in a semi-global fashion, the local input-to-state stability
of an interconnected system and in the numerical construction of a LISS
Lyapunov function. We provide a homotopy algorithm that computes a decay point
of a monotone op- erator. For this purpose we use a fixed point algorithm and
provide a function whose fixed points correspond to decay points of the
monotone operator. The advantage to an earlier algorithm is demonstrated.
Furthermore an example is given which shows how to analyze a given perturbed
interconnected system.Comment: 30 pages, 7 figures, 4 table
Gelation of cereal β-glucan at low concentrations
Viscosity of cereal beta-glucan during digestion is considered to be a vital factor for its health effects. Thus, studies on solution properties and gelation are essential for understanding the mechanisms of the beta-glucan functionality. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the dissolution temperature on gelation of cereal beta-glucan at low concentrations that are relevant for food products. The rheological properties of oat and barley beta-glucans (OBG and BBG) using three dissolution temperatures (37 degrees C, 57 degrees C and 85 degrees C) at low concentration (1.5% and 1%, respectively) were studied for 7 days. Additionally, the beta-glucans were oxidised with 70 mM H2O2 and 1 mM FeSO4 x 7H(2)O as a catalyst, to evaluate the consequence of oxidative degradation on the gelation properties. The study showed that dissolution at 85 degrees C did not result in gelation. The optimal dissolution temperature for gelation of OBG was 37 degrees C and for gelation of BBG 57 degrees C. At these temperatures, also the oxidised OBG and BBG gelled, although the gel strength was somewhat lower than in the non-oxidised ones. Gelation was suggested to require partial dissolution of beta-glucan, which depended on the molar mass and aggregation state of the beta-glucan molecule. Therefore, the state of beta-glucan in solution and its thermal treatment history may affect its technological and physiological functionality. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.Peer reviewe
Singularly Perturbed Monotone Systems and an Application to Double Phosphorylation Cycles
The theory of monotone dynamical systems has been found very useful in the
modeling of some gene, protein, and signaling networks. In monotone systems,
every net feedback loop is positive. On the other hand, negative feedback loops
are important features of many systems, since they are required for adaptation
and precision. This paper shows that, provided that these negative loops act at
a comparatively fast time scale, the main dynamical property of (strongly)
monotone systems, convergence to steady states, is still valid. An application
is worked out to a double-phosphorylation ``futile cycle'' motif which plays a
central role in eukaryotic cell signaling.Comment: 21 pages, 3 figures, corrected typos, references remove
Alterations of nocturnal activity in rats following subchronic oral administration of the neurotoxin 1-trichloromethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-β-carboline
1-Trichloromethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-β-carboline (TaClo) is neurotoxic when administered to the brain and alters motor behaviour following intraperitoneal administration. We have assessed the long-term effects of oral TaClo administration on nocturnal motor behaviour in rats. Two groups of rats received TaClo orally at a dose of either 0.2 or 0.4 mg/kg twice daily for 7 weeks. The control group was given saline. No change in locomotor activity was observed 4–9 days after the end of the 7-week administration of TaClo. In addition, the spontaneous motor activity was altered dose-dependently 9 months after oral TaClo administration, with an increase in the low-dose TaClo group and a decrease in the high-dose group. Oral administration of TaClo in rats may be useful in investigating the hypothesis that in Parkinson’s disease, an unknown pathogenic factor crossing the intestinal mucosa barrier can induce neurodegenerative processes eventually affecting the entire brain
Reaction pathways during oxidation of cereal β-glucans
Oxidation of cereal beta-glucans may affect their stability in food products. Generally, polysaccharides oxidise via different pathways leading to chain cleavage or formation of oxidised groups within the polymer chain. In this study, oxidation pathways of oat and barley beta-glucans were assessed with different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) or ascorbic acid (Asc) with ferrous iron (Fe2+) as a catalyst. Degradation of beta-glucans was evaluated using high performance size exclusion chromatography and formation of carbonyl groups using carbazole-9-carbonyloxyamine labelling. Furthermore, oxidative degradation of glucosyl residues was studied. Based on the results, the oxidation with Asc mainly resulted in glycosidic bond cleavage. With H2O2, both glycosidic bond cleavage and formation of carbonyl groups within the beta-glucan chain was found. Moreover, H2O2 oxidation led to production of formic acid, which was proposed to result from Ruff degradation where oxidised glucose (gluconic acid) is decarboxylated to form arabinose. A Characterization of Scale Invariant Responses in Enzymatic Networks
An ubiquitous property of biological sensory systems is adaptation: a step
increase in stimulus triggers an initial change in a biochemical or
physiological response, followed by a more gradual relaxation toward a basal,
pre-stimulus level. Adaptation helps maintain essential variables within
acceptable bounds and allows organisms to readjust themselves to an optimum and
non-saturating sensitivity range when faced with a prolonged change in their
environment. Recently, it was shown theoretically and experimentally that many
adapting systems, both at the organism and single-cell level, enjoy a
remarkable additional feature: scale invariance, meaning that the initial,
transient behavior remains (approximately) the same even when the background
signal level is scaled. In this work, we set out to investigate under what
conditions a broadly used model of biochemical enzymatic networks will exhibit
scale-invariant behavior. An exhaustive computational study led us to discover
a new property of surprising simplicity and generality, uniform linearizations
with fast output (ULFO), whose validity we show is both necessary and
sufficient for scale invariance of enzymatic networks. Based on this study, we
go on to develop a mathematical explanation of how ULFO results in scale
invariance. Our work provides a surprisingly consistent, simple, and general
framework for understanding this phenomenon, and results in concrete
experimental predictions
A hisztériával kapcsolatos diskurzusok tanulságai a szomatizációs jelenségek és a betegségmagatartás megértéséhez = The relevance of discourses about hysteria in the understanding of somatization phenomena and illness behaviour
A parabolic approach to the control of opinion spreading
We analyze the problem of controlling to consensus a nonlinear system
modeling opinion spreading. We derive explicit exponential estimates on the
cost of approximately controlling these systems to consensus, as a function of
the number of agents N and the control time-horizon T. Our strategy makes use
of known results on the controllability of spatially discretized semilinear
parabolic equations. Both systems can be linked through time-rescalin
Molecular Identification of Bacteria in Tracheal Aspirate Fluid from Mechanically Ventilated Preterm Infants
BACKGROUND: Despite strong evidence linking infections to the pathogenesis of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), limitations of bacterial culture methods have precluded systematic studies of airway organisms relative to disease outcomes. Application of molecular bacterial identification strategies may provide new insight into the role of bacterial acquisition in the airways of preterm infants at risk for BPD. METHODS: Serial (within 72 hours, 7, 14, and 21 days of life) tracheal aspirate samples were collected from 10 preterm infants with gestational age ≤34 weeks at birth, and birth weight of 500-1250 g who required mechanical ventilation for at least 21 days. Samples were analyzed by quantitative real time PCR assays for total bacterial load and by pyrosequencing for bacterial identification. RESULTS: Subjects were diagnosed with mild (1), moderate (3), or severe (5) BPD. One patient died prior to determination of disease severity. 107,487 sequences were analyzed, with mean of 3,359 (range 1,724-4,915) per sample. 2 of 10 samples collected <72 hours of life contained adequate bacterial DNA for successful sequence analysis, one of which was from a subject exposed to chorioamnionitis. All other samples exhibited bacterial loads >70copies/reaction. 72 organisms were observed in total. Seven organisms represented the dominant organism (>50% of total sequences) in 31/32 samples with positive sequences. A dominant organism represented>90% of total sequences in 13 samples. Staphylococcus, Ureaplasmaparvum, and Ureaplasmaurealyticum were the most frequently identified dominant organisms, but Pseudomonas, Enterococcus, and Escherichia were also identified. CONCLUSIONS: Early bacterial colonization with diverse species occursafter the first 3 days of life in the airways of intubated preterm infants, and can be characterized by bacterial load and marked species diversity. Molecular identification of bacteria in the lower airways of preterm infants has the potential to yield further insight into the pathogenesis of BPD
