For the preparation of this review was conducted a comprehensive literature search in Medline , Scopus and Google Scholar data to learn more about the HIV disease in the elderly. It is important to understand the effects that the virus in the body and the combination thereof with the changes that occur due to aging. Pharmacologic therapies used today are very effective, but in this age sector must take extra care with the risks, side effects, polypharmacy and comorbidities that may actually arise. HIV is a disease that affects the person integrally and has important implications for the functional and physical, psychological and social environment of the elderly. The assistance provided to the patient must always be more tailored to the demands in the different stages of the disease. This helps to raise public awareness, to the affected people and health professionals about the importance of providing specialized and adequate attention to the needs of older people against HIV have to make the geriatric patient increase hope and quality of life.Traballo fin de mestrado (UDC.FCS). Live demonstration: Real-time high dynamic range video acquisition using in-pixel adaptive content-aware tone mapping compression

    Get PDF
This demonstration targets the acquisition of realtime video sequences involving High Dynamic Range (HDR) scenes. Adaptation to different illumination conditions while preserving contrast is achieved by using a sensor chip, which implements an adaptive content-aware tone mapping compression algorithm by using in-pixel circuitry. Its response gets adapted to changing illumination conditions by using at each frame a statistical estimation of the light distribution, which is derived from the HDR histogram calculated at the previous frame. This method allows adaptive HDR video, while capable to capture very large DR scenes including moving objects.

Study of the spatial variation of the biodegradation rate of the herbicide bentazone with soil depth using contrasting incubation methods

Vertical and horizontal spatial variability in the biodegradation of the herbicide bentazone was compared in sandy-loam soil from an agricultural field using sieved soil and intact soil cores. An initial experiment compared degradation at five depths between 0 and 80 cm using sieved soil. Degradation was shown to follow the first-order kinetics, and time to 50% degradation (DT50), declined progressively with soil depth from 56 d at 0–10 cm to 520 d at 70–80 cm. DT50 was significantly correlated with organic matter, pH and dehydrogenase activity. In a subsequent experiment, degradation rate was compared after 127 d in sieved soil and intact cores from 0 to 10 and 50 to 60 cm depth from 10 locations across a 160 × 90 m portion of the field. Method of incubation significantly affected mean dissipation rate, although there were relatively small differences in the amount of pesticide remaining in intact cores and sieved soil, accounting for between 4.6% and 10.6% of that added. Spatial variability in degradation rate was higher in soil from 0 to 10 cm depth relative to that from 50 and 60 cm depth in both sieved soil and intact core assessments. Patterns of spatial variability measured using cores and sieved soil were similar at 50–60 cm, but not at 0–10 cm depth. This could reflect loss of environmental context following processing of sieved soil. In particular, moisture content, which was controlled in sieved soil, was found to be variable in cores, and was significantly correlated with degradation rate in intact topsoil cores from 0 to 10 cm depth

As long as democratic legitimacy stems from national politics, governments will have few incentives to make responsible decisions at the EU level

    Get PDF
When national governments make decisions at the EU level they have to balance policies which are in the national interest of their own state and policies which are in the wider interest of Europe as a whole. Based on the work of Luuk Van Middelaar, Sonia Alonso and Juan Rodríguez Teruel discuss the competing responsibilities which national governments face within the European Union. They argue that as long as democratic legitimacy stems primarily from the level of national politics, there will be few incentives for governments to make genuinely responsible decisions at the European level. Ultimately, only a stronger European democracy can solve this dilemma

Effect of the water matrix and reactor configuration on Enterococcus sp. inactivation by UV-A activated PMS or H2O2

In this work, the influence of the matrix on the photolytic activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) has been studied for the inactivation of Enterococcus sp. Additionally, two different reactor configurations (batch reactor and tubular reactor) have been evaluated that achieve complete disinfection within 120 min when using a tubular reactor. Three water matrices (distilled water, saline solution and simulated wastewater) have been studied, and experiments have been carried out using radical scavengers to determine the main reactive species involved in each process. The hydroxyl radical (center dot & nbsp;OH) has been found to be the main responsible for the inactivation of bacteria in distilled water, while chlorinated species generated during treatments are responsible for disinfection in a saline matrix. The study of the influence of various inorganic ions (Br- ,& nbsp; F-, PO43-, NO3-, NO2-) on treatments revealed an increase in the efficacy of the PMS/UV-A system in the presence of Br- due to the bromine generation. Furthermore, the effect of F- has been studied for the first time, determining that the presence of this compound does not have a significant influence on the H2O2/UV-A system while inhibiting PMS/UV-A treatment. Overall, the results suggest that H2O2-based treatments would be less dependent on matrix composition than those involving PMS, and the presence of nitrites is a contraindication to the application of either process
