    Experiments and FLUKA simulations of 12C^{12}C and 16O^{16}O beams for therapy monitoring by means of in-beam Positron Emission Tomography

    Since 1997 at the experimental C-12 ion therapy facility at Gesellschaft fuer Schwerionenforschung (GSI), Darmstadt, Germany, more than 350 patients have been treated. The therapy is monitored with a dedicated positron emission tomograph, fully integrated into the treatment site. The measured beta+-activity arises from inelastic nuclear interactions between the beam particles an the nuclei of the patients tissue. Because the monitoring is done during the irradiation the method is called in-beam PET. The underlying principle of this monitoring is a comparison between the measured activity and a simulated one. The simulations are presently done by the PETSIM code which is dedicated to C-12 beams. In future ion therapy centers like the Heidelberger Ionenstrahl Therapiezentrum (HIT), Heidelberg, Germany, besides C-12 also proton, 3^3He and O-16 beams will be used for treatment and the therapy will be monitored by means of in-beam PET. Because PETSIM is not extendable to other ions in an easy way, a code capable to predict the beta+-activity created by all ions of interrest, also possible future ones, is needed. A candidate for such a role is the multi purpose particle transport and interaction Monte Carlo code FLUKA. The objective of this thesis is to investigate the ability of FLUKA to predict the beta+-activity induced by C-12 and O-16 beams, necessary for in-beam PET. Experiments with O-16 and C-12 beams on homogeneous targets of water, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and graphite were performed and the created beta+-activity was measured by means of in-beam PET. In case of the O-16 beams this was done for the first time. The build up and decay of the beta+-active nuclei, their spatial distribution and total amount of produced beta+-activity was investigated. The experimental data was used for benchmarking FLUKA and its implemented nuclear reaction modells. Of special interrest was the performance of the recently added event generator BME which handels nucleus-nucleus interactions at low energies. FLUKA was interfaced with the part of PETSIM which modells the detector response and stores the detected events in list mode data format. This enables to process the simulated data exactly the same way than in the experimental case and avoids uncertainties due to the detection and backprojection. To reduce the computing time, full advantage of the biasing options in FLUKA was taken. Because of the double head geometry of the in-beam PET only a small fraction of the created annihilation photons can be detected. Because most of the annihilation photons produced are not detected, a lot of computing time is wasted. To futher speed up the simulations decay direction biasing for annihilation photons was introduced. This biasing preferentially emits the annihilation photons into a wanted direction, i.e. the detector heads. The use of this biasing additionally with other standard biasing methods brought an dramatic improvement in terms of computing time. In the final simulations good agreement between measured and simulated beta+-activity could be obtained within reasonable computing times. However, also limits of the new BME event generator in its present implementetion were pointed out

    We extend our earlier model of qqˉq\bar q mesons using relativistic quasipotential (QP) wave equations to include open-flavor states and running quark-gluon coupling effects. Global fits to meson spectra are achieved with rms deviations from experiment of 43-50 MeV.     Time-Evolution of a Fractal Distribution: Particle Concentrations in Free-Surface Turbulence

    Steady-state turbulence is generated in a tank of water and the trajectories of particles forming a compressible system on the surface are tracked in time. The initial uniformly distributed floating particles coagulate and form a fractal distribution, a rare manifestation of a fractal object observable in real-space. The surface pattern reaches a steady state in approximately 1 s. Measurements are made of the fractal dimensions Dq(t)D_q(t) (q=1q=1 to 66) of the floating particles starting with the uniform distribution Dq(0)D_q(0) = 2 for Taylor Microscale Reynolds number Reλ160Re_{\lambda} \simeq 160. Focus is on the the time-evolution of the correlation dimension D2(t)D_2(t) as the steady state is approached. This steady state is reached in several large eddy turnover times and does so at an exponential rate

    Intermingled basins in coupled Lorenz systems

    We consider a system of two identical linearly coupled Lorenz oscillators, presenting synchro- nization of chaotic motion for a specified range of the coupling strength. We verify the existence of global synchronization and antisynchronization attractors with intermingled basins of attraction, such that the basin of one attractor is riddled with holes belonging to the basin of the other attractor and vice versa. We investigated this phenomenon by verifying the fulfillment of the mathematical requirements for intermingled basins, and also obtained scaling laws that characterize quantitatively the riddling of both basins for this system

    Lagrangian tracers on a surface flow: the role of time correlations

    Finite time correlations of the velocity in a surface flow are found to be important for the formation of clusters of Lagrangian tracers. The degree of clustering characterized by the Lyapunov spectrum of the flow is numerically shown to be in qualitative agreement with the predictions for the white-in-time compressible Kraichnan flow, but to deviate quantitatively.     We study the spatial patterns formed by interacting populations or reacting chemicals under the influence of chaotic flows. In particular, we have considered a three-component model of plankton dynamics advected by a meandering jet. We report general results, stressing the existence of a smooth-filamental transition in the concentration patterns depending on the relative strength of the stirring by the chaotic flow and the relaxation properties of planktonic dynamical system. Personal attitude and substantial components of socio-psychological factors of attitude development provides the field of welfare of the employee. It focuses on the implementation of efficient technologies of formation attitude towards success in the process of training and retraining. The object of the research was the OJSC Evrazruda candidate pool members studying at the Evraz Siberia Regional Staff Training Center, as well as a group of experts (engineer, metallurgists). The techniques of V. K. Gerbachevsky, V. V. Stolin, S. R. Panteleyev, H. J. Eysenck, M. Rokeach, N. M. Peysakhov and J. Rotter were used in the research. The study showed the interconnection of a person's attitude with the dominant features of the component structure of motivational, volitional and self-consciousness factors. They are the determinants of wellbeing and quality of life in professional activity

    BACKGROUND: Elevated serum cardiac troponin T (cTnT) and I (cTnI) can occur in patients with chronic kidney disease. Differences in cTn concentrations between cTnT and cTnI have been reported but the mechanism of such discrepancy has not been investigated. This study investigates the clearance of cTn with the aid of an in vitro model of haemodialysis (HD). METHODS: Serum was obtained before and after a single session of dialysis from 53 patients receiving HD and assayed for cTnT and cTnI. An in vitro model of the dialysis process was used to investigate the mechanism of clearance of cTn during HD. RESULTS: Serum cTnI was significantly lower (p=0.043) following a session of HD whereas cTnT concentrations were similar to those obtained before HD. Using an in vitro model of dialysis, it was demonstrated that cTnI is not dialysed from the vascular compartment but adheres to the dialyser membrane. CONCLUSIONS: The adherence of cTnI to the dialyser membrane is responsible for the observed decrease in serum cTnI following a session of dialysis. The adherence of cTnT or T-I-C complex to the dialyser membrane could not be demonstrated and supports the observation that pre-HD and post-HD serum concentrations of cTnT are similar

    Design and rationale of the ATHENA study – A 12-month, multicentre, prospective study evaluating the outcomes of a de novo everolimus-based regimen in combination with reduced cyclosporine or tacrolimus versus a standard regimen in kidney transplant patients: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial

    Background: Immunosuppression with calcineurin inhibitors remains the mainstay of treatment after kidney transplantation; however, long-term use of these drugs may be associated with nephrotoxicity. In this regard, the current approach is to optimise available immunosuppressive regimens to reduce the calcineurin inhibitor dose while protecting renal function without affecting the efficacy. The ATHENA study is designed to evaluate renal function in two regimens: an everolimus and reduced calcineurin inhibitor-based regimen versus a standard treatment protocol with mycophenolic acid and tacrolimus in de novo kidney transplant recipients. Method/Design: ATHENA is a 12-month, multicentre, open-label, prospective, randomised, parallel-group study in de novo kidney transplant recipients (aged 18 years or older) receiving renal allografts from deceased or living donors. Eligible patients are randomised (1:1:1) prior to transplantation to one of the following three treatment arms: everolimus (starting dose 1.5 mg/day; C0 3–8 ng/mL) with cyclosporine or everolimus (starting dose 3 mg/day; C0 3–8 ng/mL) with tacrolimus or mycophenolic acid (enteric-coated mycophenolate sodium at 1.44 g/day or mycophenolate mofetil at 2 g/day) with tacrolimus; in combination with corticosteroids. All patients receive induction therapy with basiliximab. The primary objective is to demonstrate non-inferiority of renal function (eGFR by the Nankivell formula) in one of the everolimus arms compared with the standard group at month 12 post transplantation. The key secondary objective is to assess the incidence of treatment failure, defined as biopsy-proven acute rejection, graft loss, or death, among the treatment groups. Other objectives include assessment of the individual components of treatment failure, incidence and severity of viral infections, incidence and duration of delayed graft function, incidence of indication biopsies, slow graft function and wound healing complications, and overall safety and tolerability. Exploratory objectives include evaluation of left ventricular hypertrophy assessed by the left ventricular mass index, evolution of human leukocyte antigen and non-human leukocyte antigen antibodies, and a cytomegalovirus substudy. Discussion: As one of the largest European multicentre kidney transplant studies, ATHENA will determine whether a de novo everolimus-based regimen can preserve renal function versus the standard of care. This study further assesses a number of clinical issues which impact long-term outcomes post transplantation; hence, its results will have a major clinical impact.
