    Analysis techniques for residual acceleration data

    Various aspects of residual acceleration data are of interest to low-gravity experimenters. Maximum and mean values and various other statistics can be obtained from data as collected in the time domain. Additional information may be obtained through manipulation of the data. Fourier analysis is discussed as a means of obtaining information about dominant frequency components of a given data window. Transformation of data into different coordinate axes is useful in the analysis of experiments with different orientations and can be achieved by the use of a transformation matrix. Application of such analysis techniques to residual acceleration data provides additional information than what is provided in a time history and increases the effectiveness of post-flight analysis of low-gravity experiments

    Relationships between correlated spikes, oxygen and LFP in the resting-state primate

    Resting-state functional MRI (rsfMRI) provides a view of human brain organization based on correlation patterns of blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) signals recorded across the whole brain. The neural basis of resting-state BOLD fluctuations and their correlation remains poorly understood. We simultaneously recorded oxygen level, spikes, and local field potential (LFP) at multiple sites in awake, resting monkeys. Following a spike, the average local oxygen and LFP voltage responses each resemble a task-driven BOLD response, with LFP preceding oxygen by 0.5 s. Between sites, features of the long-range correlation patterns of oxygen, LFP, and spikes are similar to features seen in rsfMRI. Most of the variance shared between sites lies in the infraslow frequency band (0.01-0.1 Hz) and in the infraslow envelope of higher-frequency bands (e.g. gamma LFP). While gamma LFP and infraslow LFP are both strong correlates of local oxygen, infraslow LFP explains significantly more of the variance shared between correlated oxygen signals than any other electrophysiological signal. Together these findings are consistent with a causal relationship between infraslow LFP and long-range oxygen correlations in the resting state

    z~2: An Epoch of Disk Assembly

    We explore the evolution of the internal gas kinematics of star-forming galaxies from the peak of cosmic star-formation at z∼2z\sim2 to today. Measurements of galaxy rotation velocity VrotV_{rot}, which quantify ordered motions, and gas velocity dispersion σg\sigma_g, which quantify disordered motions, are adopted from the DEEP2 and SIGMA surveys. This sample covers a continuous baseline in redshift from z=2.5z=2.5 to z=0.1z=0.1, spanning 10 Gyrs. At low redshift, nearly all sufficiently massive star-forming galaxies are rotationally supported (Vrot>σgV_{rot}>\sigma_g). By z=2z=2, the percentage of galaxies with rotational support has declined to 50%\% at low stellar mass (109−1010 M⊙10^{9}-10^{10}\,M_{\odot}) and 70%\% at high stellar mass (1010−1011M⊙10^{10}-10^{11}M_{\odot}). For Vrot > 3 σgV_{rot}\,>\,3\,\sigma_g, the percentage drops below 35%\% for all masses. From z = 2z\,=\,2 to now, galaxies exhibit remarkably smooth kinematic evolution on average. All galaxies tend towards rotational support with time, and it is reached earlier in higher mass systems. This is mostly due to an average decline in σg\sigma_g by a factor of 3 since a redshift of 2, which is independent of mass. Over the same time period, VrotV_{rot} increases by a factor of 1.5 for low mass systems, but does not evolve for high mass systems. These trends in VrotV_{rot} and σg\sigma_g with time are at a fixed stellar mass and should not be interpreted as evolutionary tracks for galaxy populations. When galaxy populations are linked in time with abundance matching, not only does σg\sigma_g decline with time as before, but VrotV_{rot} strongly increases with time for all galaxy masses. This enhances the evolution in Vrot/σgV_{rot}/\sigma_g.     A Common Class of Transcripts with 5\u27-Intron Depletion, Distinct Early Coding Sequence Features, and N1-Methyladenosine Modification [preprint]

    Introns are found in 5\u27 untranslated regions (5\u27UTRs) for 35% of all human transcripts. These 5\u27UTR introns are not randomly distributed: genes that encode secreted, membrane-bound and mitochondrial proteins are less likely to have them. Curiously, transcripts lacking 5\u27UTR introns tend to harbor specific RNA sequence elements in their early coding regions. To model and understand the connection between coding-region sequence and 5\u27UTR intron status, we developed a classifier that can predict 5\u27UTR intron status with \u3e80% accuracy using only sequence features in the early coding region. Thus, the classifier identifies transcripts with 5\u27 proximal-intron-minus-like-coding regions ( 5IM transcripts). Unexpectedly, we found that the early coding sequence features defining 5IM transcripts are widespread, appearing in 21% of all human RefSeq transcripts. The 5IM class of transcripts is enriched for non-AUG start codons, more extensive secondary structure both preceding the start codon and near the 5\u27 cap, greater dependence on eIF4E for translation, and association with ER-proximal ribosomes. 5IM transcripts are bound by the Exon Junction Complex (EJC) at non-canonical 5\u27 proximal positions. Finally, N1-methyladenosines are specifically enriched in the early coding regions of 5IM transcripts. Taken together, our analyses point to the existence of a distinct 5IM class comprising ~20% of human transcripts. This class is defined by depletion of 5\u27 proximal introns, presence of specific RNA sequence features associated with low translation efficiency, N1-methyladenosines in the early coding region, and enrichment for non-canonical binding by the Exon Junction Complex

    Lack of trust in maternal support is associated with negative interpretations of ambiguous maternal behavior

    Attachment theory assumes that children who lack trust in maternal availability for support are more inclined to interpret maternal behavior in congruence with their expectation that mother will remain unavailable for support. To provide the first test of this assumption, early adolescents (9-13 years old) were asked to assess whether ambiguous interactions with mother should be interpreted in a positive or a negative way. In our sample (n = 322), results showed that early adolescents' lack of trust in their mother's availability for support was related to more negative interpretations of maternal behavior. The associations remained significant after controlling for depressive mood. The importance of these findings for our understanding of attachment theory, attachment stability, and clinical practice are discussed

    Thermoelectric properties of lead chalcogenide core-shell nanostructures

    We present the full thermoelectric characterization of nanostructured bulk PbTe and PbTe-PbSe samples fabricated from colloidal core-shell nanoparticles followed by spark plasma sintering. An unusually large thermopower is found in both materials, and the possibility of energy filtering as opposed to grain boundary scattering as an explanation is discussed. A decreased Debye temperature and an increased molar specific heat are in accordance with recent predictions for nanostructured materials. On the basis of these results we propose suitable core-shell material combinations for future thermoelectric materials of large electric conductivities in combination with an increased thermopower by energy filtering.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figure

    Secret Codes: The Hidden Curriculum of Semantic Web Technologies

    There is a long tradition in education of examination of the hidden curriculum, those elements which are implicit or tacit to the formal goals of education. This article draws upon that tradition to open up for investigation the hidden curriculum and assumptions about students and knowledge that are embedded in the coding undertaken to facilitate learning through information technologies, and emerging ‘semantic technologies’ in particular. Drawing upon an empirical study of case-based pedagogy in higher education, we examine the ways in which code becomes an actor in both enabling and constraining knowledge, reasoning, representation and students. The article argues that how this occurs, and to what effect, is largely left unexamined and becomes part of the hidden curriculum of electronically mediated learning that can be more explicitly examined by positioning technologies in general, and code in particular, as actors rather than tools. This points to a significant research agenda in technology enhanced learning
