Remote Sensing and GIS-Based Suitability Mapping of Termite Habitat in the African Savanna: A Case Study of the Lowveld in Kruger National Park
Termites (Isoptera) are among the most globally dominant macroinvertebrates in terrestrial environments and are an ecologically important group of soil biota in tropical and subtropical ecosystems. These insects function as essential ecosystem engineers that facilitate nutrient cycling, especially in the regulation of the physical and chemical properties of soil and the decomposition of organic matter that maintains heterogeneity in tropical and subtropical ecosystems. Termites, like all living organisms, require certain environmental parameters to support the distribution, abundance, and activities of the species. South Africa's Kruger National Park (KNP)-one of the most important protected areas in the world and a popular safari tourist destination-is an extraordinary savanna ecosystem in which termite mounds, or termitaria, are widely distributed. A range of biotic and abiotic factors found in the natural environment of KNP provide highly suitable ecological conditions for termite habitat range, and thus the development of termitaria. Previous research has shown that the most important factors affecting habitat suitability for termites and the geographic distribution of termitaria include climate factors, land cover, and other environmental characteristics such as soil composition and plant-litter biomass. However, the specific environmental mechanisms that regulate termite occurrence and the spatial distribution of termitaria in KNP are not fully understood, especially in the context of climate and land-cover changes. The present study examines the relationship between the spatial distribution of termitaria and selected climate and environmental factors in the Kruger Lowveld region, which contains one of the largest numbers of termitaria in KNP. Using high-resolution satellite imagery, 8200 training points of termitaria occurrence were collected throughout the study area to train classifiers and produce land-cover-classification maps for the Kruger Lowveld region of interest. We then applied a hybrid approach through the integration of remote sensing (RS) and a GIS-based analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and frequency-ratio (FR) methods to model the relationship between the spatial distribution of termitaria and selected environmental variables and to produce suitability maps. To our knowledge, this study is the first of its kind to examine the influence of combined sets of environmental attributes on the spatial distribution of termitaria in the Lowveld region of KNP. The results indicate that moderately and highly suitable conditions for termite range tolerance and termitaria development are correlated with undulating plains with clay soils, greater distance to drainage streams, high solar radiation, and low depth of groundwater. The findings of this study shed light on the need for future research that investigates the impact of climate and land-cover changes on termite habitat range and spatial distribution and that can inform park managers and policymakers about Kruger National Park and other protected areas with similar environmental conditions

Functional equivalence of stem cell and stem cell-derived extracellular vesicle transplantation to repair the irradiated brain.
Cranial radiotherapy, although beneficial for the treatment of brain tumors, inevitably leads to normal tissue damage that can induce unintended neurocognitive complications that are progressive and debilitating. Ionizing radiation exposure has also been shown to compromise the structural integrity of mature neurons throughout the brain, an effect believed to be at least in part responsible for the deterioration of cognitive health. Past work has shown that cranially transplanted human neural stem cells (hNSCs) or their extracellular vesicles (EVs) afforded long-term beneficial effects on many of these cognitive decrements. To provide additional insight into the potential neuroprotective mechanisms of cell-based regenerative strategies, we have analyzed hippocampal neurons for changes in structural integrity and synaptic remodeling after unilateral and bilateral transplantation of hNSCs or EVs derived from those same cells. Interestingly, hNSCs and EVs similarly afforded protection to host neurons, ameliorating the impact of irradiation on dendritic complexity and spine density for neurons present in both the ipsilateral and contralateral hippocampi 1 month following irradiation and transplantation. These morphometric improvements were accompanied by increased levels of glial cell-derived growth factor and significant attenuation of radiation-induced increases in postsynaptic density protein 95 and activated microglia were found ipsi- and contra-lateral to the transplantation sites of the irradiated hippocampus treated with hNSCs or hNSC-derived EVs. These findings document potent far-reaching neuroprotective effects mediated by grafted stem cells or EVs adjacent and distal to the site of transplantation and support their potential as therapeutic agents to counteract the adverse effects of cranial irradiation

Based in Los Arcos, an educational facility in San Miguel de Allende, the group studied the city’s planning and urban design, visited other cities and places of interest, and interviewed with local planners and architects
Teacher-made Tactile Science Materials with Critical and Creative Thinking Activities for Learners Including those with Visual Impairments
Gifted students with visual impairments are twice exceptional learners and may not evidence their advanced science aptitudes without appropriate accommodations for learning science. However, effective tactile science teaching materials may be easily made. Recent research has shown that when tactile materials are used with all students in the class, everyone benefits. This presentation provides many classroom-tested example sets of tactile materials for teaching upper elementary and middle school science concepts. These science concepts include the parts of: a flower, ear, insect, beaver habitat, volcano, hydroelectric power plant, plant cell, and sun. Critical and creative thinking skill strategies to accompany these materials for further developing gifted students’ science knowledge also are provided. These include application of the Edward de Bono CoRT Breadth thinking skills and other creative thinking skills, such as making a model or using analogy. Examining inequalities in the uptake of the school-based HPV vaccination programme in England: A retrospective cohort study
Background: Although uptake of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is high in the United Kingdom, it is unknown whether the programme has been delivered equitably by ethnicity or deprivation. This study aimed to investigate factors associated with HPV vaccine initiation and completion within the routine HPV vaccination programme in the South West of England. Methods: Data were retrieved for young women eligible for routine vaccination from 2008/09 to 2010/11 from three Primary Care Trusts (PCTs)/local authorities. Multivariable logistic regression models were developed to examine factors associated with uptake of HPV vaccination. Results: Of 14 282 eligible young women, 12 658 (88.6%) initiated, of whom 11 725 (92.6%) completed the course. Initiation varied by programme year (86.5-89.6%) and PCTs/local authorities (84.8-91.6%). There was strong evidence for an overall difference of initiation by ethnicity (P < 0.001), but not deprivation quintile (P = 0.48). Young women educated in non-mainstream educational settings were less likely to initiate and, if initiated, less likely to complete (both P < 0.001). Conclusions: HPV vaccination uptake did not vary markedly by social deprivation. However, associations with ethnicity and substantially lower uptake in non-mainstream educational settings were observed. Research to identify reasons for low vaccine uptake in these population groups is required. © The Author 2013
Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2015
The goal of the Department of Energy (DOE) Solar Decathlon 2015 project is to design, build, and operate a zero-net energy solar-photovoltaic (solar-PV) powered residence. It is an international competition taking place in the fall of 2015 in Irvine, California. The design needs to be attractive, energy-efficient, innovative, and affordable. The Cal Poly team includes students from a variety of majors, including Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and many more. The different disciplines need to work together to create a functional and cohesive design. For our senior project, we have designed the electrical systems in the home, including the power, lighting, solar-PV systems, and energy monitoring. The design flow has four stages, Schematic Design (SD), Design Documents (DD), Construction Documents (CD), and Construction Administration (CA). Models were created using the AutoDesk software Revit, which is a building information modeling program with real-time 3D rendering. Our electrical design must comply with state and national building codes, such as the California Electrical Code (CEC) and National Electrical Code (NEC)
Very Metal-poor Stars in the Outer Galactic Bulge Found by the Apogee Survey
Despite its importance for understanding the nature of early stellar
generations and for constraining Galactic bulge formation models, at present
little is known about the metal-poor stellar content of the central Milky Way.
This is a consequence of the great distances involved and intervening dust
obscuration, which challenge optical studies. However, the Apache Point
Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE), a wide-area, multifiber,
high-resolution spectroscopic survey within Sloan Digital Sky Survey III
(SDSS-III), is exploring the chemistry of all Galactic stellar populations at
infrared wavelengths, with particular emphasis on the disk and the bulge. An
automated spectral analysis of data on 2,403 giant stars in twelve fields in
the bulge obtained during APOGEE commissioning yielded five stars with low
metallicity([Fe/H]), including two that are very metal-poor
[Fe/H] by bulge standards.
Luminosity-based distance estimates place the five stars within the outer
bulge, where other 1,246 of the analyzed stars may reside. A manual reanalysis
of the spectra verifies the low metallicities, and finds these stars to be
enhanced in the -elements O, Mg, and Si without significant
-pattern differences with other local halo or metal-weak thick-disk
stars of similar metallicity, or even with other more metal-rich bulge stars.
While neither the kinematics nor chemistry of these stars can yet definitively
determine which, if any, are truly bulge members, rather than denizens of other
populations co-located with the bulge, the newly-identified stars reveal that
the chemistry of metal-poor stars in the central Galaxy resembles that of
metal-weak thick-disk stars at similar metallicity.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 2 table
Effect of multivitamin and multimineral supplementation on cognitive function in men and women aged 65 years and over : a randomised controlled trial
Background: Observational studies have frequently reported an association between cognitive function and nutrition in later life but randomised trials of B vitamins and antioxidant supplements have mostly found no beneficial effect. We examined the effect of daily supplementation with 11 vitamins and 5 minerals on cognitive function in older adults to assess the possibility that this could help to prevent cognitive decline. Methods: The study was carried out as part of a randomised double blind placebo controlled trial of micronutrient supplementation based in six primary care health centres in North East Scotland. 910 men and women aged 65 years and over living in the community were recruited and randomised: 456 to active treatment and 454 to placebo. The active treatment consisted of a single tablet containing eleven vitamins and five minerals in amounts ranging from 50–210 % of the UK Reference Nutrient Intake or matching placebo tablet taken daily for 12 months. Digit span forward and verbal fluency tests, which assess immediate memory and executive functioning respectively, were conducted at the start and end of the intervention period. Risk of micronutrient deficiency at baseline was assessed by a simple risk questionnaire. Results: For digit span forward there was no evidence of an effect of supplements in all participants or in sub-groups defined by age or risk of deficiency. For verbal fluency there was no evidence of a beneficial effect in the whole study population but there was weak evidence for a beneficial effect of supplementation in the two pre-specified subgroups: in those aged 75 years and over (n 290; mean difference between supplemented and placebo groups 2.8 (95% CI -0.6, 6.2) units) and in those at increased risk of micronutrient deficiency assessed by the risk questionnaire (n 260; mean difference between supplemented and placebo groups 2.5 (95% CI -1.0, 6.1) units). Conclusion: The results provide no evidence for a beneficial effect of daily multivitamin and multimineral supplements on these domains of cognitive function in community-living people over 65 years. However, the possibility of beneficial effects in older people and those at greater risk of nutritional deficiency deserves further attention.Peer reviewedPublisher PD
The Open Cluster Chemical Analysis and Mapping Survey: Local Galactic Metallicity Gradient with APOGEE using SDSS DR10
The Open Cluster Chemical Analysis and Mapping (OCCAM) Survey aims to produce
a comprehensive, uniform, infrared-based dataset for hundreds of open clusters,
and constrain key Galactic dynamical and chemical parameters from this sample.
This first contribution from the OCCAM survey presents analysis of 141 members
stars in 28 open clusters with high-resolution metallicities derived from a
large uniform sample collected as part of the SDSS-III/Apache Point Observatory
Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE). This sample includes the first
high-resolution metallicity measurements for 22 open clusters. With this
largest ever uniformly observed sample of open cluster stars we investigate the
Galactic disk gradients of both [M/H] and [alpha/M]. We find basically no
gradient across this range in [alpha/M], but [M/H] does show a gradient for
R_{GC} < 10 kpc and a significant flattening beyond R_{GC} = 10 kpc. In
particular, whereas fitting a single linear trend yields an [M/H] gradient of
-0.09 +/- 0.03$ dex/kpc --- similar to previously measure gradients inside 13
kpc --- by independently fitting inside and outside 10 kpc separately we find a
significantly steeper gradient near the Sun (7.9 <= R_{GC} <= 10) than
previously found (-0.20 +/- 0.08 dex/kpc) and a nearly flat trend beyond 10 kpc
