Quantum Bound States in Yang-Mills-Higgs Theory
We give rigorous proofs for the existence of infinitely many (non-BPS) bound
states for two linear operators associated with the Yang-Mills-Higgs equations
at vanishing Higgs self-coupling and for gauge group SU(2): the operator
obtained by linearising the Yang-Mills-Higgs equations around a charge one
monopole and the Laplace operator on the Atiyah-Hitchin moduli space of centred
charge two monopoles. For the linearised system we use the Riesz-Galerkin
approximation to compute upper bounds on the lowest 20 eigenvalues. We discuss
the similarities in the spectrum of the linearised system and the Laplace
operator, and interpret them in the light of electric-magnetic duality

The wall shear stress produced by the normal impingement of a jet on a flat surface
A method for the theoretical determination of the wall shear stress under impinging jets of various congurations is presented. Axisymmetric and two-dimensional
incompressible jets of a wide range of Reynolds numbers and jet heights are considered. Theoretical predictions from this approach are compared with available wall shear stress measurements. These data are critically evaluated based on the method of measurement and its applicability to the boundary layer under consideration. It was found that impingement-region wall shear stress measurements using the electrochemical method in submerged impinging liquid jets provide the greatest accuracy of any indirect method. A unique wall shear stress measurement technique, based
on observing the removal of monosized spheres from well-characterized surfaces, was used to conrm the impinging jet analysis presented for gas jets. The technique was also used to determine an empirical relation describing the rise in wall shear stress due to compressibility eects in impinging high-velocity jets
Internal U, Th and Rb concentrations of alkali-feldspar grains:Implications for luminescence dating
This study assesses whether internal U, Th and Rb concentrations of single grains of alkali-feldspar can impact upon luminescence dating. Internal alpha dose-rates determined for two sedimentary samples calculated from mean U and Th concentrations accounted for ∼10% of the total dose-rates, while internal beta dose-rates from mean Rb concentrations accounted for ∼2%. Depth profiles of measurements penetrating into each grain show that internal U and Th concentrations varied between grains, where some grains had effective internal alpha dose-rates up to 1.8 Gy/ka (32% of the total dose-rate). K concentrations inferred from Rb (KRb) for individual grains suggest that internal U and Th concentrations are related to the feldspar composition. Grains with KRb > 6% had low U and Th, and grains with KRb < 6% had higher U and Th concentrations. Internal alpha and beta dose-rates of the perthitic and Na-rich grains contaminating the density-separated K-feldspar fractions had a significant impact upon the single-grain De distributions, which was estimated to be equivalent to overdispersion values of ∼10 – 15%. The scatter in the De distributions arising from internal alpha and beta dose-rates for both samples could be reduced by selecting only the brightest 20% of grains for luminescence dating
Effectiveness of an influenza vaccine programme for care home staff to prevent death, morbidity, and health service use among residents: cluster randomised controlled trial
Objective To determine whether vaccination of care home staff against influenza indirectly protects residents.Design Pair matched cluster randomised controlled trial.Setting Large private chain of UK care homes during the winters of 2003-4 and 2004-5.Participants Nursing home staff (n = 1703) and residents (n = 2604) in 44 care homes (22 intervention homes and 22 matched control homes).Interventions Vaccination offered to staff in intervention homes but not in control homes.Main outcome measures The primary outcome was all cause mortality of residents. Secondary outcomes were influenza-like illness and health service use in residents.Results In 2003-4 vaccine coverage in full time staff was 48.2% (407/884) in intervention homes and 5.9% (51/859) in control homes. In 2004-5 uptake rates were 43.2% (365/844) and 3.5% (28/800). National influenza rates were substaritially below average in 2004-5. In the 2003-4 period of influenza activity significant decreases were found in mortality of residents in intervention homes compared with control homes (rate difference - 5.0 per 100 residents, 95% confidence interval - 7.0 to - 2.0) and in influenza-like illness (P = 0.004), consultations with general practitioners for influenza-like illness (P = 0.008), and admissions to hospital with influenza-like illness (P = 0.009). No significant differences were found in 2004-5 or during periods of no influenza activity in 2003-4.Conclusions Vaccinating care home staff against influenza can prevent deaths, health service use, and influenza-like illness in residents during periods of moderate influenza activity
P-Multigrid expansion of hybrid multilevel solvers for discontinuous Galerkin finite element discrete ordinate (DG-FEM-SN) diffusion synthetic acceleration (DSA) of radiation transport algorithms
Effective preconditioning of neutron diffusion problems is necessary for the development of efficient DSA schemes for neutron transport problems. This paper uses P-multigrid techniques to expand two preconditioners designed to solve the MIP diffusion neutron diffusion equation with a discontinuous Galerkin (DG-FEM) framework using first-order elements. These preconditioners are based on projecting the first-order DG-FEM formulation to either a linear continuous or a constant discontinuous FEM system. The P-multigrid expansion allows the preconditioners to be applied to problems discretised with second and higher-order elements. The preconditioning algorithms are defined in the form of both a V-cycle and W-cycle and applied to solve challenging neutron diffusion problems. In addition a hybrid preconditioner using P-multigrid and AMG without a constant or continuous coarsening is used. Their performance is measured against a computationally efficient standard algebraic multigrid preconditioner. The results obtained demonstrate that all preconditioners studied in this paper provide good convergence with the continuous method generally being the most computationally efficient. In terms of memory requirements the preconditioners studied significantly outperform the AMG
Engagement in a newly launched online support community for complex regional pain syndrome: membership growth, header analysis and introductory messages
Several studies have investigated forum engagement, with a small but growing body of research focusing on the number of people using a forum (membership growth), how they use it (header analysis) and how they introduce themselves (introductory messages). Most studies use established forums and little is known about newly launched forums. This study examines engagement in a newly launched forum for complex regional pain syndrome. Results showed that membership growth occurred in bursts that were closely linked to promotional strategies. Header analysis showed the forum was used throughout the day, evening and night, with a focus on providing support as well as receiving it. Introductory messages took the form of disease stories with six themes: personal details, precipitating event, symptoms, treatment, living with CRPS, and reasons for joining. Implications and areas for future research are discussed
Toward a New UV Index Diagnostic in the Met Office's Forecast Model

Available on open access from AGU via the DOI in this recordThe United Kingdom sporadically experiences low ozone events in the spring which can increase UV to harmful levels and is particularly dangerous as sunburn is not expected by the public at this time of year. This study investigates the benefits to the UV Index diagnostic produced by the UM at the Met Office of including either, or both of, a more highly resolved spectrum, and forecasted ozone profiles from the ECMWF CAMS database. Two new configurations of the spectral parameters governing the radiative transfer calculation over the UV region are formulated using the correlated‐k method to give surface fluxes that are within 0.1 UV Index of an accurate reference scheme. Clear‐sky comparisons of modeled fluxes with ground‐based spectral observations at two UK sites (Reading and Chilton) between 2011 and 2015 show that when raw CAMS ozone profiles are included noontime UV indices are always overestimated, by up to 3 UV indices at a low ozone event and up to 1.5 on a clear summer day, suggesting CAMS ozone concentrations are too low. The new spectral parameterizations reduce UV Index biases, apart from when combined with ozone profiles that are significantly underestimated. When the same biases are examined spectrally across the UV region some low biases on low ozone days are found to be the result of compensating errors in different parts of the spectrum. Children as experiencers: increasing engagement, participation and inclusion for young children in the museum
This research aimed to evaluate young children’s engagement, participation and inclusion within a city museum by utilising observations and semi structured interviews with children and families. Both groups requested more interactive exhibits, sensory experiences, making and doing activities and role play opportunities. In this article, we argue for increased visibility of children’s ‘intangible heritage’(Brookshaw, 2016) and opportunities for responding which make links with children’s lives contemporarily. We further argue that museums should view children as experiencers rather than learners
AAO Starbugs: software control and associated algorithms
The Australian Astronomical Observatory's TAIPAN instrument deploys 150
Starbug robots to position optical fibres to accuracies of 0.3 arcsec, on a 32
cm glass field plate on the focal plane of the 1.2 m UK-Schmidt telescope. This
paper describes the software system developed to control and monitor the
Starbugs, with particular emphasis on the automated path-finding algorithms,
and the metrology software which keeps track of the position and motion of
individual Starbugs as they independently move in a crowded field. The software
employs a tiered approach to find a collision-free path for every Starbug, from
its current position to its target location. This consists of three
path-finding stages of increasing complexity and computational cost. For each
Starbug a path is attempted using a simple method. If unsuccessful,
subsequently more complex (and expensive) methods are tried until a valid path
