Las raíces coloniales de la religiosidad brasileña

Las religiones y las religiosidades son unos de los fenómenos más importantes en la formación de las culturas y sociedades, siempre existiendo en la vinculación fuerte con el contexto donde han surgido y integrados con todos sus elementos. El objetivo de este artículo lo constituye un acercamiento a los procesos históricos de formación de la religiosidad brasileña desde la época colonial, haciendo especial hincapié en los factores que en mayor medida han contribuido a darle su carácter de apertura en la adaptación no sólo de la religión dominante (catolicismo lusitano), pero también de otras religiones, a las condiciones latinoamericanas, procesándolas in situ según las necesidades de los brasileños y convertiéndolas en una parte auténtica del ‘alma brasileña’.Both religions and religiosities have always been one of the most important phenomena in the process of formation of cultures and societies, existing in strong connection with the context in which they appeared and integrated with all of its ingredients. The objective of this article is to approach the historical processes of formation of the Brazilian religiosity since the colonial period, highlighting factors which to the greatest extent have contributed towards its qualities of openness in the adaptation of not only dominating religion (Lusitan Catholicism), but also other religions, to Latin American conditions, processing them in situ according to the necessities of Brazilian people and converting them into a genuine part of the ‘Brazilian soul’

Religion and religiosity in transformations – methodological dilemmas

In the article, the author attempts to prove that traditional research tools are no longer useful to investigate contemporary religious phenomena, regardless of how they are defned in the postmodern world, in which they lose their credibility in terms of being the only source of sense and morality. Therefore, new theories and new theses, or even a paradigm shift, are necessary in order to raise new questions about what is happening with religion in a fluid, inconstant and variable reality

América Latina es actualmente una de las regiones más interesantes para las investigaciones del fenómeno de la religión, sus transformaciones contemporáneas y las relaciones dialécticas entre la religión y el mundo de la política. Estas dimensiones se entremezclan desde los tiempos coloniales, pero es ahora cuando se puede observar que la fuerza de la religión, en el contexto social y político del continente latinoamericano, está creciendo bruscamente. Aparecen nuevas iglesias y movimientos religiosos comprometidos políticamente, y la afiliación religiosa empieza a influir cada vez más, a la hora de las elecciones, en las decisiones de los latinoamericanos

Infanticídio e tentativa de “morte de si mesmo”: atos extremos no universo escravista

This article proposes a historic-sociologic-cultural discourse analysis regarding the slavery in Brazil through determined criminal judicial procedures that concern enslaved subjects negotiating their captive condition. These procedures are archived in the Public Archive of Rio Grande do Sul State (APERS) and they present the following binominal: infanticide and suicide attempt. They refer to slave mothers that in different moments killed their own children and then attempted suicide. In these procedures there are allegations of demonic possession and other similar argumentations that were used to try to explain this limit act. In all of these cases, the common thread is the violence present in the enslaving culture that marked Brazil and that, to a certain degree, was not overcome by the Abolition of Slavery in 1888.Este artigo propõe uma análise do discurso histórico-sociológico-cultural a respeito da escravidão no Brasil a partir de determinados processos-crimes que envolvem sujeitos escravizados negociando sua condição cativa. Esses processos estão acervados no Arquivo Público do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul (APERS) e apresentam o seguinte binômio: infanticídio e tentativa de suicídio. Eles tratam de mães escravas que em momentos diferentes mataram seus filhos e depois tentaram suicídio. Nesses processos existem alegações de possessão demoníaca e outras argumentações semelhantes que foram usadas para tentar explicar esse ato limite. Em todos esses casos, o fio condutor é a violência presente na cultura escravista que marcou o Brasil e que, de certa forma, não foi superada pela Abolição da Escravatura de 1888

Surfing and Faith. The contemporary Neo-Pentecostal tribalism in Brazil

The article discusses, in reference to Mafessoli’s “new tribalism,” the process of the founding and development of the first local surfers’ church in the insular part of the city of Florianópolis, the capital of Santa Catarina in Brazil, where the culture of surfers has been very strong for several decades. Przemiany zachodzące w systemach religijnych pod wpływem różnych determinant są wpisane w historię wszystkich społeczeństw i kultur. Czasami ograniczają się one do tworzenia synkretyzmów i eklektyzmów religijnych, ale też niejednokrotnie skutkują pojawianiem się nowych, odnoszących sukces prozelityczny organizacji religijnych i osłabieniem tradycyjnych instytucji wiary. Współcześnie najbardziej widocznymi sygnałami przemian religijnych w Brazylii wydają się być, zwłaszcza w kontekście zaskakująco wysokiego zapotrzebowania na „zinstytucjonalizowaną wiarę” wyrażanego w deklarowanej afiliacji religijnej zdecydowanej większości Brazylijczyków1 (w przeciwieństwie do większości krajów cywilizacji Zachodu, dla których charakterystyczna jest tendencja do „wiary bez przynależności”), nowe, prężne, synkretyczne kościoły i wspólnoty (zwłaszcza chrześcijańskie o proweniencji zielonoświątkowej) oraz sukcesywny, choć ostatnio spowolniony, spadek poziomu przynależności do tradycyjnie dominującego w Brazylii Kościoła katolickieg

“Health and wealth” in contemporary Brazilian religious culture

The various connections between financial, physical, and mental health are often visible: health (physical and mental) can have an outsized impact on one’s financial life. The reverse is true as well: financial well-being and socioeconomic status are often determining factors in what helps people keep healthy. How religious institutions (Igreja Internacional da Graça de Deus/International Church of the Grace of God – here IIGD), by means of their doctrines (prosperity gospel) and business-like (including religious marketing) strategies of growth, influence everyday life of their followers in Brazil, while taking advantage of the “health and wealth” concept for the sake of their own expansion, is the main topic of the article
