    Considering the History of Education Abroad Programs to Create Assignments Serving both the Academic & Professional Needs of Students

    This contribution explores two technology-based assignments—a travel journal & video bio and a Wikipedia translation project—that were developed for implementation in study abroad courses. Developed in consideration of historical and contemporary study abroad program structures, instructors and program directors can modify and adapt the assignments described for many different courses and locations. Each assignment builds upon specific learning outcomes emphasizing international components that advance critical language, research, and writing skills. Secondary goals of these assignments are the creation of deliverables that articulate to future employers the depth and value of education abroad programs and how these experiences have prepared students who participate to engage in careers in the global marketplace. Learning objectives, considerations about technology requirements, frameworks of the assignments, and a rationale for the components are discussed in detail

    Provenance and Paleogeography of the 25-17 Ma Rainbow Gardens Formation: Evidence for Tectonic Activity at Ca. 19 Ma and Internal Drainage rather than Throughgoing Paleorivers on the Southwestern Colorado Plateau

    The paleogeographic evolution of the Lake Mead region of southern Nevada and northwest Arizona is crucial to understanding the geologic history of the U.S. Southwest, including the evolution of the Colorado Plateau and formation of the Grand Canyon. The ca. 25–17 Ma Rainbow Gardens Formation in the Lake Mead region, the informally named, roughly coeval Jean Conglomerate, and the ca. 24–19 Ma Buck and Doe Conglomerate southeast of Lake Mead hold the only stratigraphic evidence for the Cenozoic pre-extensional geology and paleogeography of this area. Building on prior work, we present new sedimentologic and stratigraphic data, including sandstone provenance and detrital zircon data, to create a more detailed paleogeographic picture of the Lake Mead, Grand Wash Trough, and Hualapai Plateau region from 25 to 18 Ma. These data confirm that sediment was sourced primarily from Paleozoic strata exposed in surrounding Sevier and Laramide uplifts and active volcanic fields to the north. In addition, a distinctive signal of coarse sediment derived from Proterozoic crystalline basement first appeared in the southwestern corner of the basin ca. 25 Ma at the beginning of Rainbow Gardens Formation deposition and then prograded north and east ca. 19 Ma across the southern half of the basin. Regional thermochronologic data suggest that Cretaceous deposits likely blanketed the Lake Mead region by the end of Sevier thrusting. Post-Laramide northward cliff retreat off the Kingman/Mogollon uplifts left a stepped erosion surface with progressively younger strata preserved northward, on which Rainbow Gardens Formation strata were deposited. Deposition of the Rainbow Gardens Formation in general and the 19 Ma progradational pulse in particular may reflect tectonic uplift events just prior to onset of rapid extension at 17 Ma, as supported by both thermochronology and sedimentary data. Data presented here negate the California and Arizona River hypotheses for an “old” Grand Canyon and also negate models wherein the Rainbow Gardens Formation was the depocenter for a 25–18 Ma Little Colorado paleoriver flowing west through East Kaibab paleocanyons. Instead, provenance and paleocurrent data suggest local to regional sources for deposition of the Rainbow Gardens Formation atop a stripped low-relief western Colorado Plateau surface and preclude any significant input from a regional throughgoing paleoriver entering the basin from the east or northeast

    Non-nuclear testing can be a valuable tool in the development of a space nuclear power system. At the NASA MSFC Early Flight Fission Test Facility (EFF-TF), highly designed electric heaters are used to simulate the heat from nuclear fuel to test space fission power and propulsion systems. To allow early utilization, nuclear system designs must be relatively simple, easy to fabricate, and easy to test using non-nuclear heaters to closely mimic heat from fission.     Design of Refractory Metal Heat Pipe Life Test Environment Chamber, Cooling System, and Radio Frequency Heating System

    A series of 16 Mo-44.5%Re alloy/sodium heat pipes will be experimentally tested to examine heat pipe aging. To support this evaluation, an environmental test chamber and a number of auxiliary subsystems are required. These subsystems include radio frequency (RF) power supplies/inductive coils, recirculation water coolant loops, and chamber gas conditioning. The heat pipes will be grouped, based on like power and gas mixture requirements, into three clusters of five units each, configured in a pentagonal arrangement. The highest powered heat pipe will be tested separately. Test chamber atmospheric purity is targeted at <0.3 ppb oxygen at an approximate operating pressure of 76 torr (.1.5 psia), maintained by active purification (oxygen level is comparable to a 10(exp -6) torr environment). Treated water will be used in two independent cooling circuits to remove .85 kW. One circuit will service the RF hardware while the other will maintain the heat pipe calorimetry. Initial procedures for the startup and operation of support systems have been identified. Each of these subsystems is outfitted with a variety of instrumentation, integrated with distributed real-time controllers and computers. A local area network provides communication between all devices. This data and control network continuously monitors the health of the test hardware, providing warning indicators followed by automatic shutdown should potentially damaging conditions develop.     Evaluation of an International Entrepreneur Exchange Program: Impacts, Lessons Learned, and Implications for Agricultural Development

    This study evaluated a two-way, visitor exchange project for entrepreneurship development between three African countries and the United States. The study’s purpose was to determine outcomes, understand lessons learned, and derive implications for international agricultural development. Findings of the study confirm visiting African Entrepreneur Fellows (AEFs) developed entrepreneurial knowledge, gained business skills, and acquired positive attitudes toward U.S. business and culture. The majority of AEFs had applied acquired knowledge and skills to improve their businesses and promoted open economic ideals, business ethics, and human rights in their businesses. As a result, AEFs were able to expand their business into new ventures, improve customer services, establish communication networks, and serve their communities. Visitor exchange, entrepreneurship-building programs are effective strategies in contributing to development efforts in developing countries. Paying due attention to the selection and matching of U.S. mentors with the business interests and learning needs of international fellows is necessary to ensure their learning expectations are met. It is important to assign international participants with suitable mentors for longer periods of time to increase the likelihood of receiving more in-depth learning experiences and develop lasting professional relationships to further collaboration. Realization of the potential of entrepreneurship-focused, visitor exchange programs between nations as a strategy for international agricultural development is the major implication of this study

    A região nordeste do Estado de São Paulo concentra uma área rica em atividades vinculadas ao setor agropecuário desde o século XIX, com a entrada do café. A partir da década de 20, com a quebra da bolsa de Nova York, e principalmente a partir da década de 70, com o Proálcool, a cultura da cana-de-açúcar ganhou grande importância na região. Como seria esperado, a implantação das culturas trouxe impactos antrópicos como a supressão da vegetação natural e a expansão de áreas urbanas. Segundo o relatório ?Uso e Cobertura das Terras na Região Nordeste do Estado de São Paulo?, da Embrapa Monitoramento por Satélite (2007), as áreas urbanas aumentaram mais de 30%, de 89.818 ha para 118.898 ha em 2002/2003. A expansão foi registrada principalmente por 15.128 ha de pastagens, 6.072 ha de cana-de-açúcar e 3.447 ha de culturas anuais. Por outro lado, a retração ocorreu sobre 48 ha de pastagens, 22 ha de vegetação ripária e 22 ha de corpos d?água mapeados na zona peri-urbana. Em 2002/2003, no município de Araras, a área urbana ocupava 3741 ha, enquanto a área referente aos corpos d´água (represas, açudes, lagos, lagoas e os rios) compreendia 934 ha.     Endovascular Thrombectomy for Mild Strokes: How Low Should We Go? A Multicenter Cohort Study

    Background and Purpose:Endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) is effective for acute ischemic stroke with large vessel occlusion (LVO) and NIHSS ≥6. However, EVT benefit for mild deficits LVOs (NIHSS Methods: A retrospective cohort of patients with anterior circulation LVO and NIHSSoutcome; mRS=0–2 was the secondary. Symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage (sICH) was the safety outcome. Clinical outcomes were compared through a multivariable logistic regression after adjusting for age, presentation NIHSS, time-last-seen-normal-to-presentation, center, IV-alteplase, ASPECTS, and thrombus location. We then performed propensity score matching as a sensitivity analysis. Results were also stratified by thrombus location. Results: 214 patients (EVT-124, medical management-90) were included from 8 US and Spain centers between January/2012 and March/2017. The groups were similar in age, ASPECTS, IValteplase rate and time-last-seen-normal-to-presentation. There was no difference in mRS=0–1 between EVT and medical management (55.7% versus 54.4%, respectively, aOR=1.3, 95%CI=0.64–2.64, p=0.47). Similar results were seen for mRS=0–2 (63.3% EVT versus 67.8% medical management, aOR=0.9, 95%CI=0.43–1.88, p=0.77). In a propensity matching analysis, there was no treatment effect in 62 matched pairs (53.5%EVT, 48.4% medical management; OR=1.17, 95%CI=0.54–2.52, p=0.69). There was no statistically significant difference when stratified by any thrombus location; M1 approached significance (p=0.07). sICH rates were higher with thrombectomy (5.8% EVT versus 0% medical management, p=0.02).     [Abstract]: Challenges confronting schools worldwide are greater than ever,and, likewise, many teachers possess capabilities, talents, and formal credentials more sophisticated than ever. However, the responsibility and authority accorded to teachers have not grown significantly, nor has the image of teaching as a profession advanced significantly. The question becomes, what are the implications for the image and status of the teaching profession as the concept of knowledge society takes a firm hold in the industrialized world? This article addresses the philosophical underpinnings of teacher leadership manifested in case studies where schools sought to achieve the generation of new knowledge as part of a process of whole-school revitalization. Specifically, this article reports on Australian research that has illuminated the work of teacher leaders engaged in the IDEAS project, a joint school revitalization initiative of the University of Southern Queensland and the Queensland Department of Education and the Arts
