In college, as in other educational contexts, not enough to acquire a body of knowledge, it is essential to think about the cognitive processes to make independent and informed decisions regarding learning. Learning goes beyond cognitive issues, emotions and the posssibilities of think over of learning are critical in the complex processes of knowledge construction. The purpose of the study is to analyze metacognitive aspects related to academic learning on first year students of Kindergarten Teacher at the Universidad Nacional de Río Cuarto and Intituto Superior María Inmaculada (Argentina). At the first part of the research, students answered a general questionnaire on practices and habits of study and an inventory of learning patterns: ILS (Vermunt, 1998). Then, we conducted group interviews with students in order to acknowledge different views regarding the study practices, learning and teaching in contexts of higher education. The results show that most of students require external regulations to develop learning processes. We observe some difficulties in self-regulation of reading processes, writing and study in general. It is proposed to develop innovative strategies to promote thoughtful and metacognitive practices in students concerning learning in academic contexts.Elisondo, R.; De La Barrera, ML.; Rigo, DY.; Kowszyk, DI.; Fagotti Kucharski, E.; Ricetti, A.; Siracusa, M. Homologs of genes and anonymous loci on human Chromosome 13 map to mouse Chromosomes 8 and 14

To enhance the comparative map for human Chromosome (Chr) 13, we identified clones for human genes and anonymous loci that cross-hybridized with their mouse homologs and then used linkage crosses for mapping. Of the clones for four genes and twelve anonymous loci tested, cross-hybridization was found for six, COL4A1, COL4A2, D13S26, D13S35, F10, and PCCA. Strong evidence for homology was found for COL4A1, COL4A2, D13S26, D13S35, and F10, but only circumstantial homology evidence was obtained for PCCA. To genetically map these mouse homologs ( Cf10, Col4a1, Col4a2, D14H13S26, D8H13S35 , and Pcca-rs ), we used interspecific and intersubspecific mapping panels. D14H13S26 and Pcca-rs were located on the distal portion of mouse Chr 14 extending by ∼30 cM the conserved linkage between human Chr 13 and mouse Chr 14, assuming that Pcca-rs is the mouse homolog of PCCA. By contrast, Cf10, Col4a1, Col4a2 , and D8H13S35 mapped near the centromere of mouse Chr 8, defining a new conserved linkage. Finally, we identified either a closely linked sequence related to Col4a2 , or a recombination hot-spot between Col4a1 and Col4a2 that has been conserved in humans and mice.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/47022/1/335_2004_Article_BF00352413.pd

Sugar-and-acid profile of Penjar tomatoes and its evolution during storage

The alcobaca mutation in the Penjar tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) variety alters the ripening process and confers a long shelf life (more than four months). Storage of Penjar tomatoes leads to a distinctive sensory profile valued by local consumers, who prefer aged tomatoes to fresh ones. To study chemical changes occurring during storage, we characterized the complete sugar-and-acid profile of 25 accessions at harvest and at 2 and 4 months after harvest. We found considerable variability in the sugar-and-acid profile within the Penjar variety, especially for fructose and glucose. Some accessions presented exceptionally high values for sugars, making them especially interesting for breeding programs. During postharvest, the concentration of glucose, fructose, and citric acid decreased, whereas the concentration of malic and glutamic acids increased. Data from this study offer novel insights into postharvest changes in tomato quality parameters and help elucidate the reasons for the appreciation of this variety by consumers.Postprint (published version

    MHC class II-dependent basophil-CD4(+) T cell interactions promote T(H)2 cytokine-dependent immunity

Dendritic cells can prime naive CD4(+) T cells; however, here we demonstrate that dendritic cell-mediated priming was insufficient for the development of T helper type 2 cell-dependent immunity. We identify basophils as a dominant cell population that coexpressed major histocompatibility complex class II and interleukin 4 message after helminth infection. Basophilia was promoted by thymic stromal lymphopoietin, and depletion of basophils impaired immunity to helminth infection. Basophils promoted antigen-specific CD4(+) T cell proliferation and interleukin 4 production in vitro, and transfer of basophils augmented the population expansion of helminth-responsive CD4(+) T cells in vivo. Collectively, our studies suggest that major histocompatibility complex class II-dependent interactions between basophils and CD4(+) T cells promote T helper type 2 cytokine responses and immunity to helminth infectio
