Batter\u27s Choice: Lessons for Teaching Tactics in a Modified Striking/Fielding Game
When played in their standard form, striking/fielding games are often a favorite among elementary students; yet they allow for only limited participation, which is contradictory to quality physical education. This article presents a sequence of lessons leading to Batter\u27s Choice, a modified striking/fielding game, designed to maximize the attainment of tactical awareness, skill enhancement, and enjoyment by elementary children. Each lesson uses a tactical approach to involve students in solving a tactical problem within a game-like situation and then practicing the skills necessary to solve the problem. The tactical problems prepare students for game situations they will experience in the culminating game, Batter\u27s Choice. The game-like situations are designed to highlight offensive tactical decisions (such as where to hit the ball in order to get on base) and defensive tactical decisions (such as where to throw the ball after fielding it). Though the complexity of Batter\u27s Choice is appropriate to the needs of middle to upper elementary children, tactics learned in these lessons may later be used in more complex and traditional sports such as softball or cricket
The Real on Food-Related Medical Conditions: Narrativizing the Respective Lived Experiences of Eight Interlocutors Around Their Unique Food Needs
This native ethnographic research project disrupts narratives which limit analytical engagement with food-related medical conditions to the medical, and creates space for unpacking the very real social and emotional implications of suffering from a food-related medical condition. Eight interlocutorsā respective lived experiences, thoughts, and feelings are narrativized and used to understand what it means - holistically - to have medically-imposed dietary restrictions. Some key themes explored in this work include: stigma; embarrassment; the desire to render oneās food-related medical condition imperceptible to others; bullying; privilege (which takes multiple forms); fear of being seen by others as āthat personā; race; systemic health inequities; Covid-19 and its relation to everyday living with a food-related medical condition; and anti-Black systemic racism
āThis Is a Picture Ofā¦Exploring Pre-Service Teachers Experiences āLiving a Hybrid Curriculumā
Examination of pre-service teachersā (PSTs) learning and use of Models-Based Instruction (MBI) is a relevant direction in efforts to transform physical education through increased physical education teacher effectiveness. In an effort to help PSTs learn MBI, Oslin, Collier, and Griffin (2001) suggested physical education teacher education programs utilize a āLiving the Curriculumā approach allowing PSTs to experience MBI within their teacher education programs
Defining and Measuring Excellence in the Changing World of Higher Education: Case Stories from Five Colleges of Education
This paper presents a collection of case stories from five Educator Preparation Programs (EPPs) within colleges of education, four from institutions in Texas and one from California, to present a micro cross-sectional narrative interpretation of what constitutes excellence in educator preparation. The broad framework utilized in this interpretation focuses on the individual approaches used by each institution for creating and sustaining positive cultures of data-informed decision-making, with the ultimate objective of continuous program improvement, while also meeting the accreditation expectations of each institution
From Atheoretical to Motivation Theory-based Youth Discretionary-time Physical Activity Promotion: Current and Future Directions
This article describes the importance of promoting childrenās discretionary-time physical activity (DTPA) in connection with the rising international obesity epidemic. School based recess is highlighted as exemplar of an opportunity for children to obtain more DTPA. Brief review of the extant research focused on efforts to increase childrenās recess physical activity (RPA) is provided. Literature from the field of sports psychology that has established a strong foundation of evidence regarding factors that increase youth motivation in various physical domain contexts will guide the proposed expansion to theoretical examination of predictors of youth DTPA. Three relevant motivation theory frameworks will be discussed as the basis for recommendations of future systematic research on promotion of youth DTPA
A Commentary: Bangladesh to take over the training of midwifery educators
While Bangladesh has made gains in maternal health provisions, there are still gaps and unmet need for services. Bangladesh has trained over 7 000 midwives, and many more midwifery educators are needed to serve the countryās population of 140 million with midwifery services. In April 2016 the first nursing faculty teaching midwifery students at nursing institutes across Bangladesh were enrolled in a blended online and onsite masterās programme with the Dalarna University, Sweden. The programme content focused the subject sexual, reproductive and perinatal health and was the first of its kind in Asia. The graduating faculty members were expected to be in a position to deliver higher quality education to the midwifery students (1, 2). To date, the team of teachers from Dalarna University has trained 150 midwifery educators (3). The current proposal from the University is that an equivalent to the Swedish Master\u27s programme should be established in Bangladesh. While Bangladesh has made gains in education of midwives, there are still gaps and unmet need for educators with skills and knowledge in the subject of midwifery. During a period of transition, open seminars will be held at Dalarna University for all alumni who want to attend, with the hope on the part of the team of Dalarna university teachers being that they provide inspiration for high-quality midwifery education in Bangladesh
