    Mid-callosal Plane Determination Using Preferred Directions From Diffusion Tensor Images

    The corpus callosum is the major brain structure responsible for inter-hemispheric communication between neurons. Many studies seek to relate corpus callosum attributes to patient characteristics, cerebral diseases and psychological disorders. Most of those studies rely on 2D analysis of the corpus callosum in the mid-sagittal plane. However, it is common to find conflicting results among studies, once many ignore methodological issues and define the mid-sagittal plane based on precary or invalid criteria with respect to the corpus callosum. In this work we propose a novel method to determine the mid-callosal plane using the corpus callosum internal preferred diffusion directions obtained from diffusion tensor images. This plane is analogous to the mid-sagittal plane, but intended to serve exclusively as the corpus callosum reference. Our method elucidates the great potential the directional information of the corpus callosum fibers have to indicate its own referential. Results from experiments with five image pairs from distinct subjects, obtained under the same conditions, demonstrate the method effectiveness to find the corpus callosum symmetric axis relative to the axial plane.941

    Sequencings in Semidirect Products via the Polynomial Method

    The partial sums of a sequence x=x1,x2,,xk{\mathbf x} = x_1, x_2, \ldots, x_k of distinct non-identity elements of a group (G,)(G,\cdot) are s0=idGs_0 = id_G and sj=i=1jxis_j = \prod_{i=1}^j x_i for 0<jk0 < j \leq k. If the partial sums are all different then x{\mathbf x} is a linear sequencing and if the partial sums are all different when ijt|i-j| \leq t then x{\mathbf x} is a tt-weak sequencing. We investigate these notions of sequenceability in semidirect products using the polynomial method. We show that every subset of order kk of the non-identity elements of the dihedral group of order 2m2m has a linear sequencing when k12k \leq 12 and either m>3m>3 is prime or every prime factor of mm is larger than k!k!, unless sks_k is unavoidably the identity; that every subset of order kk of a non-abelian group of order three times a prime has a linear sequencing when 5<k105 < k \leq 10, unless sks_k is unavoidably the identity; and that if the order of a group is pepe then all sufficiently large subsets of the non-identity elements are tt-weakly sequenceable when p>3p>3 is prime, e3e \leq 3 and t6t \leq 6.Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2203.1665

    Post-acute covid-19 rehabilitation network proposal: From intensive to extensive and home-based it supported services

    Management of COVID-19 post-acute syndrome is an emerging health issue in rehabilitation. This article aims to present a proposal, based on the principles of clinical governance, health management and information technology (IT), and to respond to the need for a structured organization model for post-acute COVID-19 rehabilitation. The authors present a regional-based model of a network of clinicians and healthcare managers using a dedicated IT platform to achieve both effectiveness and efficiency objectives, to ensure coordination of the available resources and the most appropriate rehabilitative treatment for patients. The proposed post-acute COVID-19 rehabilitation network has been designed according to the model of a clinical management project within the Italian national healthcare system, and its context is an easily adjustable model for the European healthcare systems. The authors base the project on current laws and scientific guidelines in rehabilitation in Italy and in Europe and use the SWOT analysis technique to assess the proposal feasibility. The primary aims of the project are: (1) standardizing the minimum assessment tools of post-COVID-19 patients with disabilities; (2) ensuring an individual rehabilitation project for each patient with international classification of functioning, disability and health (ICF) coding and (3) reporting the activity performance with appropriate indicators. The secondary aims are: (1) developing educational programs for patients and care givers also aimed at acquiring better empowerment and positive behavior; (2) creating a regional database for data collection and (3) improving IT, and specifically tele-rehabilitation, as a suitable approach during the COVID-19 emergency and also in the future. Expected results are: continuum of care; effectiveness, efficacy and appropriateness in the delivery of rehabilitation treatments through a standardized minimum assessment and the wording of the individual rehabilitation project and a precise reporting of performance indicators to measure the effectiveness of clinical activities and the satisfaction of patients and caregivers. The assessment of results will be analyzed at three and six months to implement corrective actions according to the concept of continuous improvement of the Deming cycle. The IT remote approach allows the patient to meet the needs of proximity of care and empowerment, and, at the same time, to contain the spread of infection. This project could have a significant healthcare impact ensuring a more efficient and effective management of the demand of rehabilitation post-acute COVID-19, expanding the professional skills of the rehabilitation team members, improving both clinical and process data, in addition to optimal allocation of available economic resources

    Expression of apoptosis-related markers and clinical outcome in patients with advanced colorectal cancer

    The clinical relevance of bax and bcl-2 protein expression has been investigated in 84 patients with recurrent or metastatic colorectal cancer submitted to a chemotherapy regimen including methotrexate and fluorouracil/leucovorin. Cytoplasmic immunostaining of bax and bcl-2 was present in 65.5% and 38%, respectively, of the tumours. No association was found between bax and bcl-2 or between p53 and bax or bcl-2 protein expression. Moreover, the biomarkers were unrelated to patient and tumour characteristics known to affect the clinical outcome of colorectal cancer patients. In general, the apoptosis-related markers did not appear indicative of short- and long-term clinical response nor of prognosis. Bcl-2-negative lesions were more frequent among patients who reached an objective clinical response, which is in agreement with previously reported data regarding other tumour types. When the interrelationship between p53 and bax expression was examined, a better response rate (40%) was found for patients whose tumours did not express p53 and bax, and a better prognosis (2-year probability of overall survival 75%) for patients with p53-positive and bax-negative tumours. In the present series of patients with advanced colorectal cancer submitted to systemic chemotherapy we did not find a clear association between expression of apoptosis-related markers and clinical outcome, even in the subset of patients in which the apoptotic index as determined by the TUNEL approach was investigated. © 2001 Cancer Research Campaign http://www.bjcancer.co

    Artifacts in brain magnetic resonance imaging due to metallic dental objects

    Objective: Artifacts caused by metallic objects, such as dental crowns, dental implants and metallic orthodontic appliances, are a common problem in head and neck MRI. The aim of this retrospective study was to identify the main metal dental objects that produce artifacts on brain MRIs.Study design: Imaged metallic artifacts and their sources were identifi ed. Artifact image plane was rated on a score of 0 or 1 (0 - distinguishable for diagnosis and 1 - not distinguishable for diagnosis).Results: Seventy-eight percent of the artifacts appearing in images were caused by orthodontic appliances, followed by dental titanium implants (18%) and metallic crowns (4%). Orthodontic appliances obtained the highest scores in all planes.Conclusions: We concluded that is diffi cult to avoid the effect of metallic artifacts in the maxillofacial regions on brain scan. Removing metallic parts of the orthodontic appliance should ensure diagnostically useful quality scans

    Este artigo analisa as disputas morais que permeiam a ocupação do espaço público por cães e gatos, evidenciando os valores conflitantes presentes nos processos de ordenação dessa convivência. Seu foco é a compreensão das ambiguidades geradas pela combinação entre a sensibilidade de empatia interespécie e uma sensibilidade civilizada, entendidas a partir da experiência de proibição da política de captura e morte de animais errantes em Recife (PE). As emoções persistentes de medo e nojo no contato com cães e gatos são trazidas como exemplo do caráter limiar da civilidade em relação à violência e do contraste entre as expressões morais antropocêntricas e as moralidades fundadas na sensibilidade de empatia interespécie.Palavras-chave: Animais de rua. Moralidade.Civility and emapthy in conflict: the problem of controlling animals in public placesThis article analyses the moral disputes over the presence of stray animals in public spaces, highlighting the conflicting values emerging in attempts to control the population of stray cats and dogs. It focuses on understanding the ambiguities developed through the combination of an interspecies empathy and a civilized sensibility based on the specific case of a local policy against overpopulation in Recife (state of Pernambuco, Brazil). The recurring emotions of fear and disgust are used as examples of the threshold between (1) civility and violence and (2) the anthropocentric morality versus interspecies empathy sensibility.Keywords: Stray animals.     TRPV1-expressing primary afferents generate behavioral responses to pruritogens via multiple mechanisms

    The mechanisms that generate itch are poorly understood at both the molecular and cellular levels despite its clinical importance. To explore the peripheral neuronal mechanisms underlying itch, we assessed the behavioral responses (scratching) produced by s.c. injection of various pruritogens in PLCβ3- or TRPV1-deficient mice. We provide evidence that at least 3 different molecular pathways contribute to the transduction of itch responses to different pruritogens: 1) histamine requires the function of both PLCβ3 and the TRPV1 channel; 2) serotonin, or a selective agonist, α-methyl-serotonin (α-Me-5-HT), requires the presence of PLCβ3 but not TRPV1, and 3) endothelin-1 (ET-1) does not require either PLCβ3 or TRPV1. To determine whether the activity of these molecules is represented in a particular subpopulation of sensory neurons, we examined the behavioral consequences of selectively eliminating 2 nonoverlapping subsets of nociceptors. The genetic ablation of MrgprD^+ neurons that represent ≈90% of cutaneous nonpeptidergic neurons did not affect the scratching responses to a number of pruritogens. In contrast, chemical ablation of the central branch of TRPV1+ nociceptors led to a significant behavioral deficit for pruritogens, including α-Me-5-HT and ET-1, that is, the TRPV1-expressing nociceptor was required, whether or not TRPV1 itself was essential. Thus, TRPV1 neurons are equipped with multiple signaling mechanisms that respond to different pruritogens. Some of these require TRPV1 function; others use alternate signal transduction pathways

    Induction of a Protective Response in Mice by the Dengue Virus NS3 Protein Using DNA Vaccines

    The dengue non-structural 3 (NS3) is a multifunctional protein, containing a serino-protease domain, located at the N-terminal portion, and helicase, NTPase and RTPase domains present in the C-terminal region. This protein is considered the main target for CD4+ and CD8+ T cell responses during dengue infection, which may be involved in protection. However, few studies have been undertaken evaluating the use of this protein as a protective antigen against dengue, as well as other flavivirus. In the present work, we investigate the protective efficacy of DNA vaccines based on the NS3 protein from DENV2. Different recombinant plasmids were constructed, encoding either the full-length NS3 protein or only its functional domains (protease and helicase), fused or not to a signal peptide (t-PA). The recombinant proteins were successfully expressed in transfected BHK-21 cells, and only plasmids encoding the t-PA signal sequence mediated protein secretion. Balb/c mice were immunized with the different DNA vaccines and challenged with a lethal dose of DENV2. Most animals immunized with plasmids encoding the full-length NS3 or the helicase domain survived challenge, regardless of the presence of the t-PA. However, some mice presented clinical signs of infection with high morbidity (hind leg paralysis and hunched posture), mainly in animal groups immunized with the DNA vaccines based on the helicase domain. On the other hand, inoculation with plasmids encoding the protease domain did not induce any protection, since mortality and morbidity rates in these mouse groups were similar to those detected in the control animals. The cellular immune response was analyzed by ELISPOT with a specific-CD8+ T cell NS3 peptide. Results revealed that the DNA vaccines based on the full-length protein induced the production of INF-γ, thus suggesting the involvement of this branch of the immune system in the protection
