Adam Smith and the Marquis de Condorcet. Did they really meet?

    Get PDF
This article focuses on the alleged direct acquaintanceship between Condorcet and Adam Smith. Mistaken infor-mation about this issue was repeated many times in the literature of the late 1800s and 1900s. It is presumed that they met in France, during Smith’s journey there, chez Sophie de Grouchy. I will attempt to show that the meeting be-tween the two authors was not in fact arranged by Sophie de Grouchy, Condorcet’s wife, even though she was very interested in Smithian theories, especially about the category of “sympathy”, as confirmed by her French translation of the Theory of Moral Sentiments. My purpose is to demonstrate that Madame de Condorcet did never meet Smith and, as a result, she could not have introduced Condorcet to Smith. A greater degree of probability can be attributed to the version that indicates Turgot as the intermediary between Condorcet and Smith. In my opinion, not even this hypothesis is totally convincing, because neither Smith nor Condorcet ever talk about their meeting. Moreover, there is no evidence of correspondence between them. This article focuses on the alleged direct acquaintanceship between Condorcet and Adam Smith. El impôt unique fisiocrático. Su recepción en España.

    Get PDF
Despite its limited space-time range (France 1756-1777), the Physiocratic School has left a decisive mark on the history of economic thought. By investigating the cause and nature of national wealth and the methods to increase it, François Quesnay and the other members of the Physiocracy have identified the agricultural sector as the only source of produit net. Among the changes proposed by the Physiocrats to reform the productive structure of a backward society, the most radical is perhaps that of the impôt unique. This paper aims to explain why, despite its undeniable charm, this proposal was destined to fail, both in France and abroad, with particular reference to the case of Spain

Économie, Monnaie et Finance à l’époque d’Antonio Serra, for Classiques Garnier (2020). We present here the dialogue between André Tiran, Simona Pisanelli (both historians of economic thought) and Giovanni Muto (historian of the modern epoch and specialist in the history of the Mezzogiorno), which took place at the University of Turin on 4 October 2021. The authors emphasise the importance of an interdisciplinary approach, both for the faithful translation of classical texts, which must overcome the obstacle made by a vocabulary that has changed, and for the reconstruction of the economic and financial system of the Kingdom of Naples. The three specialists also consider it essential to include the cultural, political, and social dimension in studies of economic issues. English title: Translations and Historical Reconstructions Put to the Test of Time: a Look at the Kingdom of Naples; A Discussion with André Tiran Keywords: Antonio Serra, Marc'Antonio de Santis, Kingdom of Naples, History of Monetary and Banking Systems, Translation Theory and Practice

Prodromi illuministici a Essos? Il tema della schiavitĂą in Game of Thrones = Enlightenment forerunners in Essos? The issue of slavery in Game of Thrones

Enlightenment forerunners in Essos? The issue of slavery in Game of Thrones. Game of Thrones has won the attention of several social scientists, including those dealing with economic issues. The way the author of the novels and the TV series showrunners deal with the subject of slavery reveals a far from superficial knowledge of the 18th century abolitionist debate. The paper aims to highlight the similarities between the ideas put forward in the dialogues of Game of Thrones characters and the political, juridical and economic reflections that we find in the Enlightenment authors committed to the abolition of slavery. In both cases, it is clear that – without an adequate reconfiguration of the legislative structure and a rational reorganization of the economic system – the freeing of slaves can have uncertain outcomes
