    THE EFFECT OF SOCIAL REPUTATION ON RETENTION: DESIGNING A SOCIAL REAL-TIME DELPHI PLATFORM

    Forecasting with high uncertainty and long-time horizons still challenges researchers and practitioners. A widely adopted method in knowledge sharing and forecasting based on experts is the Delphi method and its offspring, the Real-Time Delphi. While the traditional Delphi method already is intensely investigated, the Real-Time Delphi is still evolving, and no dominant design has been found yet. A problem arising in both variants of the Delphi method, are high drop-out rates between rounds. This paper applies a design science research approach to motivate the need for social design elements from literature and derives design principles for Real-Time Delphi platform. Based on the design, we implement and evaluate a prototype in an online experiment as well as an IT artifact in a field study. We find significant supporting evidence, that (the promise of) positive social reputation increases commitment, and therefore subsequent platform engagement of our Real-Time Delphi survey. Our findings, therefore, contribute valuable design knowledge for Real-Time Delphi platforms. Moreover, we provide advice on how to raise retention in knowledge sharing systems

    Characterization of Filigree Additively Manufactured NiTi Structures Using Micro Tomography and Micromechanical Testing for Metamaterial Material Models

    This study focuses on the influence of additive manufacturing process strategies on the specimen geometry, porosity, microstructure and mechanical properties as well as their impacts on the design of metamaterials. Filigree additively manufactured NiTi specimens with diameters between 180 and 350 µm and a nominal composition of Ni50.9Ti49.1 (at %) were processed by laser powder bed fusion in a first step. Secondly, they structures were characterized by optical and electron microscopy as well as micro tomography to investigate the interrelations between the process parameters, specimen diameters and microstructure. Each specimen was finally tested in a micro tensile machine to acquire the mechanical performance. The process strategy had, besides the resulting specimen diameter, an impact on the microstructure (grain size) without negatively influencing its quality (porosity). All specimens revealed a superelastic response while the critical martensitic phase transition stress decreased with the applied vector length. As a conclusion, and since the design of programmable metamaterials relies on the accuracy of FEM simulations, precise and resource-efficient testing of filigree and complex structures remains an important part of creating a new type of metamaterials with locally adjusted material behavior

    The UK myotonic dystrophy patient registry: facilitating and accelerating clinical research

    Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is the most frequent muscular dystrophy worldwide with complex, multi-systemic, and progressively worsening symptoms. There is currently no treatment for this inherited disorder and research can be challenging due to the rarity and variability of the disease. The UK Myotonic Dystrophy Patient Registry is a patient self-enrolling online database collecting clinical and genetic information. For this cross-sectional “snapshot” analysis, 556 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of DM1 registered between May 2012 and July 2016 were included. An almost even distribution was seen between genders and a broad range of ages was present from 8 months to 78 years, with the largest proportion between 30 and 59 years. The two most frequent symptoms were fatigue and myotonia, reported by 79 and 78% of patients, respectively. The severity of myotonia correlated with the severity of fatigue as well as mobility impairment, and dysphagia occurred mostly in patients also reporting myotonia. Men reported significantly more frequent severe myotonia, whereas severe fatigue was more frequently reported by women. Cardiac abnormalities were diagnosed in 48% of patients and more than one-third of them needed a cardiac implant. Fifteen percent of patients used a non-invasive ventilation and cataracts were removed in 26% of patients, 65% of which before the age of 50 years. The registry’s primary aim was to facilitate and accelerate clinical research. However, these data also allow us to formulate questions for hypothesis-driven research that may lead to improvements in care and treatment

    A simple model allows us to study the nonclassical behavior of slowly moving atoms interacting with a quantized field. Atom and field become entangled and their joint state can be identified as a mesoscopic "Schroedinger-cat". By introducing appropriate observables for atom and field and by analyzing correlations between them based on a Bell-type inequality we can show the corresponding nonclassical behavior.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures.     Factors affecting the production of putrescine from agmatine by Lactobacillus hilgardii X1B isolated from wine

    Aims: To elucidate and characterize the metabolic putrescine synthesis pathway from agmatine by Lactobacillus hilgardii X1B. Methods and Results: The putrescine formation from agmatine by resting cells (the normal physiological state in wine) of lactic acid bacteria isolated from wine has been determined for the first time. Agmatine deiminase and N-carbamoylputrescine hydrolase enzymes, determined by HPLC and LC-Ion Trap Mass Spectrometry, carried out the putrescine synthesis from agmatine. The influence of pH, temperature, organic acids, amino acids, sugars and ethanol on the putrescine formation in wine was determined. Conclusions: Resting cells of Lact. hilgardii X 1B produce putrescine in wine. The putrescine production was carried out from agmatine through the agmatine deiminase system. Significance and Impact of the Study: These results have significance from two points of view, wine quality and toxicological and microbiological aspects, taking account that putrescine, which origin is still controversial, is quantitatively the main biogenic amine found in wine. © 2008 The Authors.Fil: Arena, Mario Eduardo.     The MOF-containing NSL complex associates globally with housekeeping genes, but activates only a defined subset

    The MOF (males absent on the first)-containing NSL (non-specific lethal) complex binds to a subset of active promoters in Drosophila melanogaster and is thought to contribute to proper gene expression. The determinants that target NSL to specific promoters and the circumstances in which the complex engages in regulating transcription are currently unknown. Here, we show that the NSL complex primarily targets active promoters and in particular housekeeping genes, at which it colocalizes with the chromatin remodeler NURF (nucleosome remodeling factor) and the histone methyltransferase Trithorax. However, only a subset of housekeeping genes associated with NSL are actually activated by it. Our analyses reveal that these NSL-activated promoters are depleted of certain insulator binding proteins and are enriched for the core promoter motif ‘Ohler 5’. Based on these results, it is possible to predict whether the NSL complex is likely to regulate a particular promoter. We conclude that the regulatory capacity of the NSL complex is highly context-dependent. Activation by the NSL complex requires a particular promoter architecture defined by combinations of chromatin regulators and core promoter motifs
