    Health Related Quality of Life of Children with Thalassemia Major in Two Selected Hospitals in Sri Lanka

    Introduction: Thalassemia is an inherited hemoglobin disorder. There are two types; thalassemia major and minor. Thalassemia major directly affects children’s physical, emotional, social and school functions. Health Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) is an important indicator to assess the health of human. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted using 60 children (age 2-12 years) with thalassemia major who attended clinics in two selected hospitals in Sri Lanka from July to September 2018. Demographic data and risk factors were collected using a self-administered questionnaire. HRQoL data were collected using the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory Version 4.0 Generic Core Scale. Data were analyzed using SPSS. Results: Mean values of the total functioning scores of physical, emotional, social and school were 89.42 (±9.20), 87.83 (±10.43), 95.00 (±7.53) and 78.75 (±14.13) respectively. Age of the children was significantly associated with emotional functioning (p=0.046), school functioning (p=0.023), psychosocial health (p=0.021) and the total summary score (p=0.006). Total number of blood transfusions per year of the patient was significantly associated with physical functioning (p=0.002), psychosocial health (p=0.045) and total summary score (p=0.034). Conclusions: Age and the total number of blood transfusions per year significantly affect the HRQoL of children with thalassemia major. Gender, type of iron chelation and age at first blood transfusion did not affect HRQoL of the children.Keywords: HRQoL, Thalassemia major, Haemoglobin disorde

    Numerical investigation of the impact behaviour of bioinspired nacre-like aluminium composite plates

    Inspired by the hierarchical structure of nacre, an aluminium alloy (AA) 7075 based composite featuring layer waviness and cohesive interface is studied as a low weight impact resistant material. To investigate the mechanical response and the ballistic performance of this laminated structure, a numerical study of the proposed nacre-like composite plates made of 1.1-mm thick AA 7075 tablets bonded with toughened epoxy resin was performed using Abaqus/Explicit. Target thicknesses of 5.4-mm, 7.5-mm and 9.6-mm impacted by a rigid hemi-spherical projectile were simulated. The epoxy material was modelled using a user-defined interface cohesive element with compressive strength enhancement. A significant performance improvement was recorded for the 5.4-mm nacre-like plate (compared to the same thickness bulk plate), which was explained by the hierarchical structure facilitating both localised energy absorption (by deformation of the tablet) and more globalized energy absorption (by inter-layered delamination and friction). For a given projectile, however, the performance improvement of using the proposed composite decreased with increasing laminate thickness, which was attributed to the increased likelihood of ductile failure occurring prior to perforation in thicker bulk plates. For 5.4-mm thick plates impacted at high velocity, the nacre-like plate had a better ballistic performance than that of the plates made of continuous (flat and wavy) layers, which was attributed to the larger area of plastic deformation (observed in the nacre-like plate after impact) due to the tablets arrangement.The Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Design in Light Metals (CE0561574); National Natural Science Foundation of China (No. 11232003); The Australian Research Council via project DP1093485

    Striatal and extrastriatal atrophy in Huntington's disease and its relationship with length of the CAG repeat

    Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder that affects the striatum most severely. However, except for juvenile forms, relative preservation of the cerebellum has been reported. The objective of the present study was to perform MRI measurements of caudate, putamen, cerebral, and cerebellar volumes and correlate these findings with the length of the CAG repeat and clinical parameters. We evaluated 50 consecutive patients with HD using MRI volumetric measurements and compared them to normal controls. Age at onset of the disease ranged from 4 to 73 years (mean: 43.1 years). The length of the CAG repeat ranged from 40 to 69 (mean: 47.2 CAG). HD patients presented marked atrophy of the caudate and putamen, as well as reduced cerebellar and cerebral volumes. There was a significant correlation between age at onset of HD and length of the CAG repeat, as well as clinical disability and age at onset. The degree of basal ganglia atrophy correlated with the length of the CAG repeat. There was no correlation between cerebellar or cerebral volume and length of the CAG repeat. However, there was a tendency to a positive correlation between duration of disease and cerebellar atrophy. While there was a negative correlation of length of the CAG repeat with age at disease onset and with striatal degeneration, its influence on extrastriatal atrophy, including the cerebellum, was not clear. Extrastriatal atrophy occurs later in HD and may be related to disease duration.1129113

    Charge-density waves in one-dimensional Hubbard superlattices

    We study the formation of charge density waves (CDW's) in one-dimensional Hubbard superlattices, modeled by a repeated pattern of repulsive (U>0) and free (U=0) sites. By means of Lanczos diagonalizations for the ground state, we calculate the charge structure factor. Our results show that while the superlattice structure affects the modulation of the charge density waves, the periodicity can still be predicted through an effective density. We also show that, for a fixed repulsive layer thickness, the periodicity of the CDW is an oscillatory function of the free layer thickness.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    On the existence of supergravity duals to D1--D5 CFT states

    We define a metric operator in the 1/2-BPS sector of the D1-D5 CFT, the eigenstates of which have a good semi-classical supergravity dual; the non-eigenstates cannot be mapped to semi-classical gravity duals. We also analyse how the data defining a CFT state manifests itself in the gravity side, and show that it is arranged into a set of multipoles. Interestingly, we find that quantum mechanical interference in the CFT can have observable manifestations in the semi-classical gravity dual. We also point out that the multipoles associated to the normal statistical ensemble fluctuate wildly, indicating that the mixed thermal state should not be associated to a semi-classical geometry.Comment: 22 pages, 2 figures. v2 : references added, typos correcte

    Intersection local times of independent fractional Brownian motions as generalized white noise functionals

    In this work we present expansions of intersection local times of fractional Brownian motions in Rd\R^d, for any dimension d≥1d\geq 1, with arbitrary Hurst coefficients in (0,1)d(0,1)^d. The expansions are in terms of Wick powers of white noises (corresponding to multiple Wiener integrals), being well-defined in the sense of generalized white noise functionals. As an application of our approach, a sufficient condition on dd for the existence of intersection local times in L2L^2 is derived, extending the results of D. Nualart and S. Ortiz-Latorre in "Intersection Local Time for Two Independent Fractional Brownian Motions" (J. Theoret.     Detecção De Cistos De Giardia Spp. E Oocistos De Cryptosporidium Spp. Na água Bruta Das Estações De Tratamento No Município De Blumenau, Sc, Brasil

    Giardia spp. and Cryptosporidium spp. are water-borne pathogenic protozoans spread through fecal-oral transmission which cause several health problems, to include gastrointestinal diseases associated with the consumption of contaminated water. There are limited data regarding the occurrence of these protozoans in surface waters in southern Brazil. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate the presence of cysts and oocysts in untreated water collected from water treatment plants in Blumenau, Santa Catarina State, Brazil. The methodology employed to study the protozoans was filtration through mixed cellulose ester membranes followed by the immunofluorescence reaction using the Merifluor® kit. Microbiological analysis was conducted using the Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater and multi-parameter probes were used for the physico-chemical analysis. Cysts of Giardia spp. were found in 23.19% of the samples and oocysts of Cryptosporidium spp. in 7.24% of the samples (n=67). All of the samples analyzed were contaminated with Escherichia coli and 11.76% of the untreated water samples had turbidity values higher than the recommended limit. In the case of the treated water samples, 23.52% had turbidity values above the limit established by legislation (Portaria MS 2914/2011). The detection of pathogenic protozoans in the untreated water at the treatment plants highlights the importance of adopting preventative measures, such as the protection of areas where water is present and adequate treatment of domestic sewage, in order to reducing the risk of protozoan transmission via potable water. © 2016, Institute for Environmental Research in Hydrographic Basins (IPABHi).
