Retinal biomarkers of Alzheimer’s disease: insights from transgenic mouse models
In this paper, we use the retina as a window into the central nervous system and in particular to assess changes in the retinal tissue associated with the Alzheimer’s disease. We imaged the retina of wild-type (WT) and transgenic mouse model (TMM) of Alzheimer’s disease with optical coherence tomography and classify retinas into the WT and TMM groups using support vector machines with the radial basis function kernel. Predictions reached an accuracy over 80% at the age of 4 months and over 90% at the age of 8 months. Texture analysis of computed fundus reference images suggests a more heterogeneous organization of the retina in transgenic mice at the age of 8 months in comparison to controls. This study was supported by the Neuroscience Mantero Belard Prize 2015 (Santa

Novel Features for Time Series Analysis: A Complex Networks Approach
Being able to capture the characteristics of a time series with a feature
vector is a very important task with a multitude of applications, such as
classification, clustering or forecasting. Usually, the features are obtained
from linear and nonlinear time series measures, that may present several data
related drawbacks. In this work we introduce NetF as an alternative set of
features, incorporating several representative topological measures of
different complex networks mappings of the time series. Our approach does not
require data preprocessing and is applicable regardless of any data
characteristics. Exploring our novel feature vector, we are able to connect
mapped network features to properties inherent in diversified time series
models, showing that NetF can be useful to characterize time data. Furthermore,
we also demonstrate the applicability of our methodology in clustering
synthetic and benchmark time series sets, comparing its performance with more
conventional features, showcasing how NetF can achieve high-accuracy clusters.
Our results are very promising, with network features from different mapping
methods capturing different properties of the time series, adding a different
and rich feature set to the literature
Risk management of bored piling construction on sandy soils with real-time cost control
UIDP/GEO/04035/2020In a global society, in which geotechnical projects are increasingly designed in a country other than the one where construction takes place, geotechnical risk management must be extended to cover infrastructure works, which are smaller than dams and tunnels, for example, since there is a significant impact on works budget imponderables. Therefore, a risk management methodology based on the likelihood of the occurrence of certain events and their economic consequences is proposed, which is applicable to bored piles (Kelly drilled) in coarse soils, easy to use, and simple to implement since the initial stage of construction. Of 12 case studies of construction works involving bored piles (Kelly drilled) carried out in Luanda (Angola), two selected examples involving the proposed risk methodology on sandy soil layers with interbedded clays are discussed. Subsequently, whether the overall foundation contract budget is affected by assessed risk is determined, and what influence it has on the budget in the light of mitigating factors and associated real costs. This method intended to encourage the adaptation of sustainable risk management in bored piles construction by the site project managers, involving risk analysis concurrently with budgetary review. Though the level of assessed technical risk may be acceptable, overall costs associated with the contract in question may not be acceptable.publishersversionpublishe
Decomposition of stochastic flows with automorphism of subbundles component
We show that given a -structure on a differentiable manifold , if
the group of automorphisms of is big enough, then there exists the
quotient of an stochastic flows by , in the sense that where , the remainder has
derivative which is vertical but transversal to the fibre of . This
geometrical context generalizes previous results where is a Riemannian
manifold and is decomposed with an isometric component, see Liao

the particular case of an SO(n)-structure on .Comment: To appear in Stochastics and Dynamics, 201
