CPPS-3D: a methodology to support cyber physical production systems design, development and deployment
Master’s dissertation in Production EngineeringCyber-Physical Production Systems are widely recognized as the key to unlock the full potential benefits of the Industry 4.0 paradigm. Cyber-Physical Production Systems Design, Development and Deployment methodology is a systematic approach in assessing necessities, identifying gaps and then designing, developing and deploying solutions to fill such gaps. It aims to support and drive enterprise’s evolution to the new working environment promoted by the availability of Industry 4.0 paradigms and technologies while challenged by the need to increment a continuous improvement culture. The proposed methodology considers the different dimensions within enterprises related with their levels of organization, competencies and technology. It is a two-phased sequentially-stepped process to enable discussion, reflection/reasoning, decision-making and action-taking towards evolution. The first phase assesses an enterprise across its Organizational, Technological and Human dimensions. The second phase establishes sequential tasks to successfully deploy solutions. Is was applied to a production section at a Portuguese enterprise with the development of a new visual management system to enable shop floor management. This development is presented as an example of Industry 4.0 technology and it promotes a faster decision-making, better production management, improved data availability as well as fosters more dynamic workplaces with enhanced reactivity to problems
Cyber Sailor: the communications and information systems staff to ensure command and control of tomorrow's naval military operations
In recent years, there has been a significant development in military information
systems and communication equipment. As a result of this development, there has been
a need for innovation in how military communications and information (CIS) systems,
which support Command and Control, are organized and cope with this technological
disruption.
The rapid advancement of science and technology places a significant burden on
military operations and the standard of education and training of military personnel
working with information systems in support of the command and control capability.
To find solutions to this problem, the following research question was raised “What
are the essential Information Systems competencies of the personnel assigned to the CIS
in the Portuguese Navy?” A mixed methodology (qualitative and quantitative) was used
to answer the same.
Based on a sample of 55 responses to a questionnaire, a semantic analysis of the
responses was carried out using Leximancer, and we concluded that systems, evolution,
training, processes, equipment, resilience, and bandwidth are essential factors to
guarantee the success of functions assigned to the CIS of the Portuguese Navy.
This research contributes with an explanatory conceptual model of the essential factors
for the success of CIS functions in the Portuguese Navy and a better understanding of the
training requirements in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) for the
development of the military assigned to this area. The conceptual model also explains the
themes, concepts and relationships that help identify what is needed to ensure the most
Snake bites represent an important public health problem in Brazil (when it occur in children
complications are more serious) research on the subject involving the pediatric population is
still scarce in the literature. The understanding of regional epidemiology favors the
installation of public policies, both preventive and assistance. We aimed to propose health
teaching strategies for the lay population in the face of snakebites in the pediatric population
treated at a university hospital in northern Brazil. This is a descriptive, epidemiological
retrospective study with a quantitative approach. Data collection was carried out through the
analysis of notification forms and medical records attended from January 2015 to December
2019. Medical records and notification forms from the National Notification System (SINAN)
of 107 patients who attended in the period were analyzed. The epidemiological dynamics
revealed that 58.9% (n=63) of the male gender, the age group between 5 and 10 years old in
58.9% (n=63), with a higher prevalence of care in the months of December, January, March
and May. Faced with social dynamics, most were from rural areas (61.7%), residents of the
municipality of Araguaína (30.8%), being taken to hospital between 1 and 3 am after the
accident (29%). The type of accident was mostly bothropic (63.6%) and the affected
anatomical region was the foot (63.5%). 48.6% (n=52) of the visits were considered mild
accidents, moderate in 37.4% (n=40) and severe in 13.8% (n=15) of cases. Antivenom serum
was used in 72.8% of patients (n=72), with antibothropic serum being the most used (57%).
Of the number who used antivenom, 91% had no adverse reaction. When present, anaphylaxis
was the most evident reaction to serum (6.4%). Antibiotic therapy was used in 43% (n=46) of
the cases, with ceftriaxone being the most used in 30.4% (n=14), followed by the association
of ceftriaxone and clindamycin in 23.9% (n=11) of the cases. The average time of antibiotic
use was between 2 and 7 days in 73.9% (n=35). Clinical complications were observed in
29.9% (n=32) of the patients, with abscesses being the most prevalent a 43.8% (n=14), with a
hospital stay between 2 and 7 days in 46.7% (n=50) of the times. In view of the
epidemiological profile observed, it can be considered that children are a vulnerable
population to snakebite in the north of Tocantins, and there should be a public health policy
aimed at the pediatric population that involves parents, teachers and other caregivers. This
objective study describes a rate of care/hospitalization due to care accidents/hospitalization
due to medical care accidents in pediatrics and to propose educational material on pre-hospital
care, aimed at the lay population that normally provides first aid, and the material was
distributed to the Municipal Health Departments in the region of Araguaína. Thuis, it is believed that health education in the correct management of the first care can influence for a
better prognosis of children victims of snakebites in the north of Tocantins. Other projects are
needed in the sense of following up this pediatric group, through lectures strengthening the
correct pre-hospital care for snakebite victims.
A coleta
A dinâmica epidemiológica revelou 58,9% (n=63) do sexo masculino, a faixa etária
Indoor air quality assessment in grocery stores
FCT_UIDB/05608/2020. FCT_UIDP/05608/2020.Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is a public and occupational health concern, as we are exposed to air pollutants daily given that we spend a great amount of our time in indoor environments. IAQ can be affected by numerous factors, from outdoor pollutants that get indoors through ventilation to building materials, furnishings, and activities carried by the building occupants. Exposure to air pollutants has been linked to a panoply of adverse effects on our health, well-being, and performance. The aim of this study was to assess the IAQ in grocery stores (GSs) in the municipality of Cascais in the Lisbon metropolitan area (Portugal) to characterize the workers’ occupational exposure to air pollutants. The study was conducted in 13 small “family” grocery stores. The IAQ monitoring campaign was conducted using low-cost sensor technologies and focused on several parameters, namely: carbon dioxide (CO2), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), temperature (T), relative humidity (RH). Overall, the IAQ of the studied GSs complied with Portuguese legislation, except for PM2.5, where 23% of GSs presented levels above the established limit value. The mean inhaled dose of workers during a workday was estimated to be 157.7 ± 57.2 μg for PM2.5 and 165.8 ± 56.0 μg for PM10. The IAQ assessment allowed the identification of the best strategies to improve worker experience in indoor workplace environments.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
a última década.
a síntese assimétrica e a resolução cinética.
A acumulação
The interest in biocatalytic approaches for the synthesis of chiral amines has
increased during the last decades due to their potential in the synthesis of cardiovascular,
antihypertensive and antiemetic drugs and for the preparation of optically pure carboxylic
acids.
Two methods have been reported for the synthesis of chiral amines by ω-
transaminases: asymmetric synthesis and kinetic resolution. During kinetic resolution
pyruvate is required as amine acceptor and is further converted into L-alanine.
Pyruvate is the end metabolite of the glycolytic pathway. In Saccharomyces
cerevisiae, pyruvate is further catabolized using either pyruvate decarboxylase (PDC) that
converts pyruvate into acetaldehyde that is the precursor of ethanol or via pyruvate
dehydrogenase (PDH). The inhibition or deletion of PDC has been reported to promote
pyruvate accumulation. In the present study, two approaches were followed to decrease the
PDC activity: (i) deleting the major structural encoding genes, PDC1 and PDC5, or (ii)
deleting THI2 which encodes the enzyme responsible for the synthesis of PDC’s co-factor
thiamine. Both strategies were attempted in a S. cerevisiae strain carrying the ω-
transaminase from Capsicum chinense for the kinetic resolution of a R,S-phenylethylamine
racemate (R,S-PEA). The desired strains were successfully constructed and confirmed
through PCR and phenotypic behaviors. However, only the THI2 deleted strain expressing
the heterologous ω-transaminase was successfully isolated. The thiamine concentration
during growth prior to fermentation was crucial for the pyruvate accumulation during the
fermentations. The minimal thiamine concentration to achieve a good ratio between pregrowth
and pyruvate accumulation was 0.05 μM. Anaerobic fermentations and aerobic
cultivations were performed in Verduyn medium to confirm the pyruvate accumulative
phenotype and screen the thiamine concentration effect with 20 g/L and 50 g/L of glucose.
The maximum pyruvate titer of 1.31 g/L was achieved. The pyruvate titer was improved
5.7 when compared to the control strain during anaerobic fermentations in Verduyn
medium. After confirmation of the desired phenotype, kinetic resolution of R,S-PEA was
performed in phosphate buffer under anaerobic and aerobic conditions. Despite increased
pyruvate accumulation, the kinetic resolution was not improved possibly due to a low
initial amine concentration. The reasons for such assumption are related with similar
ethanol titers observed in kinetic resolution reactions and pyruvate accumulation
fermentations and also the residual pyruvate accumulation during kinetic resolution
reactions

Abundance of Tuta absoluta (Meyrick, 1917) and its natural enemies on tomato crops in greenhouses of different production modes (Azores, Portugal) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae)
Tuta absoluta (Meyrick, 1917) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) is a major pest of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) crops produced in the Azorean greenhouses. Despite the major concerns, no systematic study is available to describe population dynamics of T. absoluta and its natural enemies. The objective of this study was to compare the abundance of the pest (eggs and larvae) and its native natural enemies, in greenhouses of tomato crops produced under different production modes (biological, traditional and intensive). A sampling program was carried out during 2020-2021 and two production seasons of spring-summer and fall-winter. The abundance of eggs and larvae of T. absoluta were higher in tomato crops in intensive production and lower in biological production mode. Infestations by eggs and larvae were higher in spring-summer seasons. The natural enemies recorded were Macrolophus pygmaeus (Rambur, 1839) (Hemiptera: Miridae), Dicyphus cerastii Wagner, 1951 (Hemiptera: Miridae) and Trichogramma achaeae Nagaraja & Nagarkatti, 1960 (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae). The abundance of natural enemies were very low and, virtually, do not occur during the fall-winter seasons. We found no significant difference between the abundance of M. pygmaeus amongst tomato crops from different production mode but D. cerastii was more abundant on greenhouses of biological production mode. Parasitism rate by T. achaeae does not differ between production modes and crop seasons. Considering the major concerns of the growers by the infestation levels of their crops, together with low abundance of native natural enemies, we suggest the use of biological production mode or an inoculative or augmentative strategy to control the pest in intensive and traditional productions modes.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
