    A numerical method for the conformal mapping of simply-connected domains onto the unit disc is considered. The method is based on the use of the Bergman kernel function of the domain. It is shown that, for a successful application, the basis of the series representation of the kernel must include terms that reflect the main singular behaviour of the kernel in the complement of the domain

    The role that information technology plays in today’s business activities has led to an increase in firms using and/or deploying e-markets online. This development undoubtedly affects the agri-food sector, since a large number of agricultural firms are demonstrating or are expected to demonstrate e-commerce activities. This paper aims to provide an overview of the current status of agricultural e-markets in Greece, by presenting results from an analysis of 100 cases.     Predicting academic achievement and student absences in high school: The roles of student and school attributes

    The present study aims at examining predictors of high school students’ academic achievement from student-level and school-level predictors in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, especially in light of policy mandates on educational reform in accordance with Vision 2030. Participants were 528,854 individuals who took on the Standard Achievement Admission Test (SAAT), along with other demographic variables. The mean age of participants was 19.7 years with an SD = 1.87. There were 234,813 males and 294,041 females. A Multilevel Random Coefficient Modeling (MRCM) model was engaged to identify predictors of academic achievement. Results indicated the positive roles of being a female, having educational parents, being educated in religious schools or large schools, and having small student-to-teacher ratios and the negative roles of student absences, student age, and being educated in new schools. Results are viewed under the lenses of new policy mandates on educational reform in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

    Online educational repositories for promoting agricultural knowledge

Agricultural educational repositories are systems used for storing, reusing and sharing agricultural learning resources. They contribute to agricultural education at different educational levels and target groups. Thus, this paper firstly provides an overview of Institutional Repositories (IRs) and Open Access Archives (OAAs) in Greece and agricultural repositories worldwide. Also, it describes the agricultural repositories that provide access to educational content in Greek and presents experiences from the establishment of Agricultural University of Athens’ (AUA) repository.</jats:p

    Evaluation of the CO2 Storage Capacity in Sandstone Formations from the Southeast Mesohellenic trough (Greece)

    This study investigates the capability of the Southeast Mesohellenic Trough (SE MHT) sandstone formations to serve as a potential reservoir for CO2 storage in response to the emerging climate change issues by promoting environmentally friendly mineral sequestration applications. Sandstone samples, for the first time, were evaluated for their petrographic characteristics, mineral chemistry, geochemical properties, as well as their petrophysical and gas adsorption properties through tests. The sandstones were tested and classified into distinct groups. The most promising site to be considered for pilot CO2 storage testing is the Pentalofos Formation locality since its sandstones display specific mineral phases with the proper modal composition to conceivably react with injected CO2, leading to the development of newly formed and stable secondary mineral phases. The gas adsorption results are also more encouraging for sandstones from this sedimentary formation. All the measured UCS (uniaxial compressive strength), Ei (bending stiffness), and ν (Poisson’s ratio) results are above those dictated by international standards to perform CO2 storage practices safely. Furthermore, the specified targeted locality from the Pentalofos Formation holds the geological advantage of being overlaid by an impermeable cap-rock formation, making it suitable for deploying CO2 mineralization practices. The demarcated area could permanently store a calculated amount of ~50 × 105 tons of CO2 within the geological reservoir by reacting with the specified mineral phases, as specified through the proposed petrographic PrP index (potential reactive phases)

    A Portal Technology to support European Organic Animal Production

    Organic Agriculture (OA) is a reply to Global Society‘s interest in food safety and enviromental conservation. Many European countries have significantly developed the OA sector, where Organic Animal Farming (OAF) systems hold a major part. Since, OA principles, methods and products are constantly evolving, an increasing number of agricultural agencies are using Web sites or portals to provide OA information to stakeholders. However, finding trustworthy information on OA is still time consuming, fragmented and associated with linguistic obstacles. This paper reports a new on-line service that provides (a) access to multilingual, specialized, updated and certified on-line information covering all OA plant and animal production aspects, (b) access to electronic commerce and mobile services to all participants of the OA chain and (c) user-friendly access via various communication channels. The on-line services are implemented via a central portal at the European level, aiming to provide a single point access to vari-ous OA agents. The portal presented is the result of a research programme in the context of the European Union e-content project 11293 “BIO@GRO”. The http://bioagro.aua.gr portal is ambitious to cover all the information needs of the OA stakeholders

    Cross-Cultural Validation of the Inventory of School Motivation (ISM) in the Asian Setting: Hong Kong and the Philippines

    Students’ achievement goals in school have received increasing research attention because they have been shown to be important in predicting important outcomes. As such, there has been a growing interest in measuring and comparing them across different cultural groups. However, these comparisons cannot be made until validity evidence has been attained to support the use of an instrument in the new cultural setting. In this study, we investigated the cross-cultural applicability of the Inventory of School Motivation (ISM, McInerney et al. American Educational Research Journal 34:207-236, 1997) in the Hong Kong Chinese and Philippine contexts using both within-network and between-network approaches to construct validation. The ISM measures four types of achievement goals: mastery, performance, social, and extrinsic goals. 1,406 high school students from Hong Kong (n = 697) and the Philippines (n = 709) participated. Results of the within-network test showed that the ISM had good internal consistency reliability and the confirmatory factor analysis provided support for the hypothesized four-factor model. Multigroup confirmatory factor analyses supported invariance of factor loadings across the two samples. The between-network test also indicated that these achievement goals correlated systematically with different aspects of students’ self-concepts. These findings support the applicability of the ISM among Hong Kong Chinese and Filipino students

    Belongingness in early secondary school: Key factors that primary and secondary schools need to consider

    © 2015 Vaz et al. It is unknown if, and how, students redefine their sense of school belongingness after negotiating the transition to secondary school. The current study used longitudinal data from 266 students with, and without, disabilities who negotiated the transition from 52 primary schools to 152 secondary schools. The study presents the 13 most significant personal student and contextual factors associated with belongingness in the first year of secondary school. Student perception of school belongingness was found to be stable across the transition. No variability in school belongingness due to gender, disability or household-socio-economic status (SES) was noted. Primary school belongingness accounted for 22% of the variability in secondary school belongingness. Several personal student factors (competence, coping skills) and school factors (low-level classroom task-goal orientation), which influenced belongingness in primary school, continued to influence belongingness in secondary school. In secondary school, effort-goal orientation of the student and perception of their school's tolerance to disability were each associated with perception of school belongingness. Family factors did not influence belongingness in secondary school. Findings of the current study highlight the need for primary schools to foster belongingness among their students at an early age, and transfer students' belongingness profiles as part of the handover documentation.
