    Transboundary water governance in the Hindu Kush Himalaya region Beyond the dialectics of conflict and cooperation

    This work was carried out by the Himalayan Adaptation, Water and Resilience (HI-AWARE) consortium under the Collaborative Adaptation Research Initiative in Africa and Asia (CARIAA) with financial support from the UK Government’s Department for International Development and the International Development Research Centre, Ottawa, Canada.The querulous nature of transboundary water governance is as old as the concept and practice of transboundary water management. Its discourse is now overwhelmed by attempts made and lessons learnt in transboundary water management. At the core of the rationale lies the question why countries should collaborate with each other to engage in transboundary alliances. Against this background, this narrative review presents a systematic inquiry into the rationale behind transboundary cooperation in order to reinforce and inform further research on and practice of transboundary water to vernance in the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region. It provides a justification for a pragmatic approach to transboundary water governance that goes beyond the dialectics of conflict and cooperation, particularly for countries in the HKH, where research evidence suggests that such a governance system could have momentous socio-economic as well as political implications

    Recombinant Promoter (MUASCsV8CP) Driven Totiviral Killer Protein 4 (KP4) Imparts Resistance Against Fungal Pathogens in Transgenic Tobacco

    Development of disease-resistant plant varieties achieved by engineering anti-microbial transgenes under the control of strong promoters can suffice the inhibition of pathogen growth and simultaneously ensure enhanced crop production. For evaluating the prospect of such strong promoters, we comprehensively characterized the full-length transcript promoter of Cassava Vein Mosaic Virus (CsVMV; -565 to +166) and identified CsVMV8 (-215 to +166) as the highest expressing fragment in both transient and transgenic assays. Further, we designed a new chimeric promoter ‘MUASCsV8CP’ through inter-molecular hybridization among the upstream activation sequence (UAS) of Mirabilis Mosaic Virus (MMV; -297 to -38) and CsVMV8, as the core promoter (CP). The MUASCsV8CP was found to be ∼2.2 and ∼2.4 times stronger than the CsVMV8 and CaMV35S promoters, respectively, while its activity was found to be equivalent to that of the CaMV35S2 promoter. Furthermore, we generated transgenic tobacco plants expressing the totiviral ‘Killer protein KP4’ (KP4) under the control of the MUASCsV8CP promoter. Recombinant KP4 was found to accumulate both in the cytoplasm and apoplast of plant cells. The agar-based killing zone assays revealed enhanced resistance of plant-derived KP4 against two deuteromycetous foliar pathogenic fungi viz. Alternaria alternata and Phoma exigua var. exigua. Also, transgenic plants expressing KP4 inhibited the growth progression of these fungi and conferred significant fungal resistance in detached-leaf and whole plant assays. Taken together, we establish the potential of engineering “in-built” fungal stress-tolerance in plants by expressing KP4 under a novel chimeric caulimoviral promoter in a transgenic approach

    Association Of Handgrip Strength, Body Mass Index, Waist Circumference And Depression Scale Among Adults: A Hospital Based Cross-Sectional Observational Study

    In the northeastern region of India, particularly, there has been limited research on the connection between handgrip strength, body mass index (BMI), and depression. The current study aimed to investigate whether obesity in adult women (aged 20 to 80) influenced the relationship between handgrip strength and the risk of depression. This research was conducted at Kolkata's Peerless Hospital from February 2022 to March 2023, involving a cross-sectional observational study with a total of 458 participants, both male and female, aged 18 to 80. Ethical clearance for the study was obtained from the Ethics Committee of Peerless Hospital and B K Roy Research Center, located at 360 Pancha Sayar Rd, Sahid Smirity Colony, Pancha Sayar, Kolkata, West Bengal 700094 (PHH&RCLCREC/ 4020/2023). The study adhered to the ethical guidelines established by the institution's research committee and followed the principles outlined in the 1964 Helsinki Declaration and its subsequent revisions to ensure consistent ethical standards in all procedures involving human participants. Prior to commencing the study, informed written consent was obtained from all participants. Older women with thyroid dysfunction, or hormone replacement therapy, amenorrhea, those taking vitamin D supplements and individuals with physical or mental challenges, and those who were generally uncooperative were excluded from the study. The results of the present study demonstrated a statistically significant association between depression and handgrip strength, as indicated by the Chi-Square test. Handgrip strength also displayed a significant negative correlation with BMI. Waist circumference (WC) showed a significant association with handgrip strength, with an odds ratio (OR) of 2.66. Furthermore, there was a significant negative correlation between WC and handgrip strength. When considering body fat percentage, the OR for handgrip strength was 2.92, and a significant association was observed between handgrip strength and body fat percentage

    Impact of opioid-free analgesia on pain severity and patient satisfaction after discharge from surgery: multispecialty, prospective cohort study in 25 countries

    Background: Balancing opioid stewardship and the need for adequate analgesia following discharge after surgery is challenging. This study aimed to compare the outcomes for patients discharged with opioid versus opioid-free analgesia after common surgical procedures.Methods: This international, multicentre, prospective cohort study collected data from patients undergoing common acute and elective general surgical, urological, gynaecological, and orthopaedic procedures. The primary outcomes were patient-reported time in severe pain measured on a numerical analogue scale from 0 to 100% and patient-reported satisfaction with pain relief during the first week following discharge. Data were collected by in-hospital chart review and patient telephone interview 1 week after discharge.Results: The study recruited 4273 patients from 144 centres in 25 countries; 1311 patients (30.7%) were prescribed opioid analgesia at discharge. Patients reported being in severe pain for 10 (i.q.r. 1-30)% of the first week after discharge and rated satisfaction with analgesia as 90 (i.q.r. 80-100) of 100. After adjustment for confounders, opioid analgesia on discharge was independently associated with increased pain severity (risk ratio 1.52, 95% c.i. 1.31 to 1.76; P < 0.001) and re-presentation to healthcare providers owing to side-effects of medication (OR 2.38, 95% c.i. 1.36 to 4.17; P = 0.004), but not with satisfaction with analgesia (beta coefficient 0.92, 95% c.i. -1.52 to 3.36; P = 0.468) compared with opioid-free analgesia. Although opioid prescribing varied greatly between high-income and low- and middle-income countries, patient-reported outcomes did not.Conclusion: Opioid analgesia prescription on surgical discharge is associated with a higher risk of re-presentation owing to side-effects of medication and increased patient-reported pain, but not with changes in patient-reported satisfaction. Opioid-free discharge analgesia should be adopted routinely

    Hydrothermal Carbonization of Biosolids from Waste Water Treatment Plant

    The high moisture content of biosolid from a wastewater treatment plant limits its use for agriculture and energy applications. This limitation could be obviated by hydrothermal carbonization, which requires less energy compared to other thermochemical treatment processes, and results in stabilized solid hydrochar product. The present study examined this option by hydrothermally treating the biosolid at three temperatures (180, 200 and 220 °C) for 30 min, and at 200 °C for 15, 30 and 60 min. An increase of 50% in the heating value of the biosolid was obtained after this carbonization. A reduction in the nitrogen concentration in hydrochar was noted with an increase in phosphorus concentration, but potassium concentration remained largely unchanged. Additionally, the carbon to nitrogen ratio in the hydrochar product was higher than the biosolid that makes it suitable for agriculture applications. The chemical oxygen demand of the process water was in the range of 83,000 to 96,000 mg/L. The study thus provides insight into high-value products that can be generated by the hydrothermal carbonization of biosolids

    The Material Politics of Citizenship:Struggles over Resources, Authority and Belonging in the New Federal Republic of Nepal

    Examining the boundaries of state–society–citizen–environment after the federal restructuring in Nepal, we ask how do people claim authority or citizenship rights? We theorise state power through the socio-environmental state framework as a set of socio-natural relations in the making, formed by struggles over authority, recognition and environment. Using qualitative data from Barpak, the epicentre of the 2015 earthquake, we capture the politics of natural resource governance that (re)emerged during earthquake reconstruction and local-level elections, illustrating how control over resources is negotiated, disputed, and inscribed in law (land titles and water sources) and landscapes (water sources, earthquake resettlement area, an open-air museum)
