    Changes in precipitating snow chemistry with location and elevation in the California Sierra Nevada

    Orographic snowfall in the Sierra Nevada Mountains is an important source of water for California and can vary significantly on an annual basis. The microphysical properties of orographic clouds and subsequent formation of precipitation are impacted, in part, by aerosols of varying size, number, and chemical composition, which are incorporated into clouds formed along the Sierra barrier. Herein, the physicochemical properties and sources of insoluble residues and soluble ions found in precipitation samples were explored for three sites of variable elevation in the Sierra Nevada during the 2012–2013 winter season. Residues were characterized using a suite of physicochemical techniques to determine the size‐resolved number concentrations and associated chemical composition. A transition in the aerosol sources that served as cloud seeds or were scavenged in‐cloud and below‐cloud was observed as a function of location and elevation. Anthropogenic influence from the Central Valley was dominant at the two lowest elevation sites (1900 and 2200 m above mean sea level (AMSL)), whereas long‐range transported mineral dust was a larger contributor at the highest elevation site where cleaner conditions were observed (2600 m AMSL). The residues and soluble ions observed provide insight into how multiple aerosol sources can impact cloud and precipitation formation processes, even over relatively small spatial scales.     Impact of neuraminidase inhibitors on influenza A(H1N1)pdm09‐related pneumonia: an individual participant data meta‐analysis

    BACKGROUND: The impact of neuraminidase inhibitors (NAIs) on influenza‐related pneumonia (IRP) is not established. Our objective was to investigate the association between NAI treatment and IRP incidence and outcomes in patients hospitalised with A(H1N1)pdm09 virus infection. METHODS: A worldwide meta‐analysis of individual participant data from 20 634 hospitalised patients with laboratory‐confirmed A(H1N1)pdm09 (n = 20 021) or clinically diagnosed (n = 613) ‘pandemic influenza’. The primary outcome was radiologically confirmed IRP. Odds ratios (OR) were estimated using generalised linear mixed modelling, adjusting for NAI treatment propensity, antibiotics and corticosteroids. RESULTS: Of 20 634 included participants, 5978 (29·0%) had IRP; conversely, 3349 (16·2%) had confirmed the absence of radiographic pneumonia (the comparator). Early NAI treatment (within 2 days of symptom onset) versus no NAI was not significantly associated with IRP [adj. OR 0·83 (95% CI 0·64–1·06; P = 0·136)]. Among the 5978 patients with IRP, early NAI treatment versus none did not impact on mortality [adj. OR = 0·72 (0·44–1·17; P = 0·180)] or likelihood of requiring ventilatory support [adj. OR = 1·17 (0·71–1·92; P = 0·537)], but early treatment versus later significantly reduced mortality [adj. OR = 0·70 (0·55–0·88; P = 0·003)] and likelihood of requiring ventilatory support [adj. OR = 0·68 (0·54–0·85; P = 0·001)]. CONCLUSIONS: Early NAI treatment of patients hospitalised with A(H1N1)pdm09 virus infection versus no treatment did not reduce the likelihood of IRP. However, in patients who developed IRP, early NAI treatment versus later reduced the likelihood of mortality and needing ventilatory support

    Modulation of gut microbiota by chondroitin sulfate calcium complex during alleviation of osteoporosis in ovariectomized rats.

    peer reviewedAlthough chondroitin sulfate calcium complex (CSCa) was claimed to have the bioactivity for bone care in vitro, its anti-osteoporosis bioactivity was little reported in vivo. Here, the effects of CSCa on osteoporosis rats were investigated. Results showed that, compared with the osteoporosis rats, CSCa could improve the bone mineral density and microstructure of femur, and change the bone turnover markers level in serum. 16S rRNA sequencing and metabolomics analysis indicated CSCa intervention altered the composition of gut microbiota along with metabolite profiles in ovariectomized rat faeces. The correlation analysis showed some gut microbiota taxa were significantly correlated with osteoporosis phenotypes and the enriched metabolites. Taken together, dietary CSCa intervention has the potential to alleviate the osteoporosis and related symptoms probably involving gut microbiota or the metabolite profiles as demonstrated in rats. This study provides some scientific evidence for the potential effects of CSCa as the food supplement on the osteoporosis

    Discrimination of geographical origin and species of China's cattle bones based on multi-element analyses by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry.

    peer reviewedConsumers have an increasing concern in the provenance of the foods they consume. Methods for discriminating geographical origins and species of cattle bone product are essential to provide veracious information for consumers and avoid the adulteration and inferior problems. In this study, 50 element contents of a total of 143 cattle bone samples from eight producing regions in China, were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Element contents were used as chemical indicators to discriminate species and geographical origins of cattle bone samples by multivariate data analysis, including hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA). The K-fold cross validation accuracy for species and geographical origin discrimination was 99.3% and 94.5%, respectively. This study reveals that multi-element analysis accompanied by LDA is an effective technique to ensure the information reliability of cattle bone samples, and this strategy may be a potential tool for standardizing market

    Application of Acoustic Emission Technique to the Evaluation of Coal Seam Hydraulic Flushing Effect

    Hydraulic flushing has the advantages of reducing coal stress and improving coal seam permeability, so it is widely used in high gas outburst coal seams in China. However, the effect evaluation of stress relief and permeability enhancement will be necessary before coal mining. In this paper, an acoustic emission (AE) experiment system of coal seam hydraulic flushing was established, and the AE characteristics of coal during hydraulic flushing were studied. The results show that the changes in AE signals are basically consistent with those in load and water pressure. In addition, the quantitative relationship between the signals and the damage of coal around the borehole is revealed by the theory of damage mechanics. The in-situ AE test of hydraulic flushing was performed in the Liangbei Coal Mine, by measuring gas flow and coal stress simultaneously. The variation of AE activities and the effect evaluation of hydraulic flushing were analyzed. The results reveal that the changes in coal seam stress are basically consistent with those of AE signals. After the flushing has been completed for 1−3 h, the coal seam stress decreases rapidly, and the AE counts and intensity reach the peak. Therefore, this study proposes a new method for evaluating the effect of coal seam hydraulic flushing by AE, which has a very important practical significance

    Foliar endophytes in trees varying greatly in age

    Temple trees, including the gymnosperm Platycladus orientalis and the angiosperm Styphnolobium japonicum, have been planted in China for thousands of years. Tree age thus varies widely from young to ancient trees. Foliar endophytes of P. orientalis and S. japonicum were surveyed in this exploratory study that was based on isolation into culture and sequencing of fungi from trees varying in age from 10 to 5000 years (P. orientalis) and from 10 to 1700 years (S. japonicum). Sequenced endophytes of P. orientalis and S. japonicum belonged to 24 and 16 fungal genera, respectively. Principal components analysis showed that 14 components were necessary to explain 90% of the variance in endophyte community structure in P. orientalis. In S. japonicum eight components were needed for 90%. It is against that backdrop of complex etiology in community structuring, that the relative frequencies (abundances) of 17 of the 24 endophytes from P. orientalis and 9 of the 16 from S. japonicum were significantly correlated with tree age. There were two major trends. Abundant fungal genera [Fusarium + Alternaria = 74.57% (P. orientalis) and 81.24% (S. japonicum)] tended to decline linearly with tree age. Most of the rare fungal genera, in contrast, increased in relative abundance linearly with tree age. Diversity (H ') and richness (Margalef) of endophyte communities in foliage thus increased as the trees aged. Relative abundances of pathogenic endophytes, or latent pathogens, (Pestalotiopsis funerea and Amyloporia subxantha in P. orientalis; Collectotrichum gloeosporioides and Botryosphaeria dothidea in S. japonicum) also increased linearly as the trees aged.Since leaf age does not vary with tree age in the deciduous S. japonicum, nor in the evergreen P. orientalis, 'tree age' currently lacks a mechanistic explanation for its apparent importance among common foliar endophytes

    Linking Mentoring and Job Search Behavior: A Moderated Mediation Model

    The present research aims to explore the impact of mentoring relationship on college graduates’ job search behavior among Chinese undergraduate students by examining the mediator of job search intention and the moderator of job search self-efficacy. A two-wave survey study was conducted in China (N = 594). Our findings show a positive indirect relation between mentoring and college graduates’ job search behaviors through job search intention. The graduates’ job search self-efficacy positively moderated the indirect relationship such that when job search self-efficacy was higher, the influence of mentoring on behavior via job search intention was stronger. These findings extend the literature by clarifying how and when mentoring facilitates graduates’ job search behaviors and provide practical implications for facilitating a smooth school-to-work transition in China. As the first study that empirically clarifies why (through job search intention) and when (job search self-efficacy) mentoring function is positively related to job search behavior among Chinese undergraduate students, the present study contributes to the existing mentoring and job search literature. Future research is encouraged to extend the findings by integrating theory of planned behavior (TPB) with self-regulation theory toward deepening current understanding of how and when mentoring can contribute to a student’s success in job search behavior

    Acoustic Emission Multi-Parameter Analysis of Dry and Saturated Sandstone with Cracks under Uniaxial Compression

    In order to study the mechanics and acoustic emission (AE) characteristics of fractured rock under water-rock interaction, dried and saturated sandstone samples with prefabricated double parallel cracks were prepared. Then, uniaxial compression experiments were performed to obtain their AE signals and crack propagation images. The results show that water reduces the strength and fracture toughness of fractured sandstone and enhances plasticity. After saturation, the samples start to crack earlier; the cracks grow slowly; the failure mode is transformed from shear failure along the prefabricated cracks to combined shear and tensile failure; more secondary cracks are produced. The saturated samples release less elastic energy and weaker AE signals in the whole failure process. However, their AE precursor information is more obvious and advanced, and their AE sources are more widely distributed. Compared with dry specimens, the AE frequencies of saturated specimens in the early stage of loading are distributed in a lower frequency domain. Besides, the saturated samples release less complex AE signals which are dominated by small-scale signals with weaker multi-fractal characteristics. After discussion and analysis, it is pointed out that this may be because water makes rock prone to inter-granular fracture rather than trans-granular fracture. The water lubrication also may reduce the amplitude of middle-frequency band signals produced by the friction on the fracture surface. Multi-fractal parameters can provide more abundant precursory information for rock fracture. This is of great significance to the stability of water-bearing fractured rock mass and its monitoring, and is conducive to the safe exploitation of deep energy

    Comparative Analysis of the Bioactive Compounds in Chicken Cartilage: Protective Effects of Chondroitin Sulfate and Type II Collagen Peptides Against Osteoarthritis Involve Gut Microbiota.

    peer reviewedThis study was designed to explore osteoarthritis (OA) treatment from bioactive compounds of chicken cartilage food supplements. The OA rat model induced by sodium iodoacetate was used to evaluate the treatment effect in vivo. In this study, we used animal experiments to show that oral chondroitin sulfate (CS), cartilage powder, and type II collagen peptides could increase the athletic ability of rats and reduce inflammatory cytokine levels in serum or synovial fluid, including prostaglandin E2, tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin (IL) 1β, IL-6, and IL-17. CS displayed the best treatment effect against OA. The morphological structure of articular cartilage indicated that CS could significantly improve cartilage tissue morphology and reduce OA score. Oral CS slowed down the development of OA by modulating gut microbiota. These results provided a useful scientific basis for the high-value utilization of chicken cartilage
