    A TREETOPS simulation of the Hubble Space Telescope-High Gain Antenna interaction

    Virtually any project dealing with the control of a Large Space Structure (LSS) will involve some level of verification by digital computer simulation. While the Hubble Space Telescope might not normally be included in a discussion of LSS, it is presented to highlight a recently developed simulation and analysis program named TREETOPS. TREETOPS provides digital simulation, linearization, and control system interaction of flexible, multibody spacecraft which admit to a point-connected tree topology. The HST application of TREETOPS is intended to familiarize the LSS community with TREETOPS by presenting a user perspective of its key features

    Controls, Astrophysics, and Structures Experiment in Space (CASES)

    As the size and performance requirements of future NASA and DOD spacecrafts and payloads tend to increase, the associated control systems that must effect these requirements tend to interact with the vehicle's structural dynamics. Some of the Control Structure Interaction (CSI) issues are being addressed in a flight experiment which is entitled CASES (Controls, Astrophysics and Structures Experiment in Space). As one of the first CSI flight experiments, the main emphasis for CASES is to provide a test bed for validating CSI developments and simultaneously, to pave the way for subsequent CSI experiments and science missions by establishing precedents for flight qualifying Large Space Structures (LSS)-class spacecraft. In addition, CASES provides an opportunity to obtain data bases for in-space controls and structures experiments and, at the same time, to gather hard x ray data from pertinent galactic sources

    Customer targeting and micro-marketing in a retail supply chain

While firms such as Procter & Gamble (P&G) have developed lean and flexible supply chains, this innovation has not had significant impact on the actual sale of product to the customer in individual stores. Analysis shows that large differences in the level of consumer demand for specific products exist across retail chains. However, current practices typically treat all stores across a chain the same. This thesis presents methods to target store-level marketing levers, including product mix, promotions, pricing, distribution and inventory management levels, based on shopper demographics and past purchasing behavior. Specifically, a framework to divide large retail chains into smaller "virtual chains" and subsequently develop targeted micro-marketing strategies for these virtual chains is presented. Research for this thesis was conducted during a six and a half month internship with P&G's Product Supply group at the Cosmetics division in Hunt Valley Maryland.     The inflammatory process, orchestrated against a variety of injurious stimuli, is composed of three inter-related phases; initiation, propagation and resolution. Understanding the interplay between these three phases and harnessing the beneficial properties of inflammation whilst preventing its damaging effects, will undoubtedly lead to the advent of much needed therapies, particularly in chronic disease states. The P2X(7 )receptor (P2X(7)R) is increasingly recognised as an important cell surface regulator of several key inflammatory molecules including IL-1ÎČ, IL-18, TNF-α and IL-6. Moreover, as P2X(7)R-dependent cytokine production is driven by activating the inflammasome, antagonists of this receptor are likely to have therapeutic potential as novel anti-inflammatory therapies. The function of the P2X(7)R in inflammation, immunity and its potential role in disease will be reviewed and discussed

    Relation of delayed recovery of myocardial function after takotsubo cardiomyopathy to subsequent quality of life

    Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TTC) has generally been regarded as a relatively transient disorder, characterized by reversible regional left ventricular systolic dysfunction. However, most patients with TTC experience prolonged lassitude or dyspnea after acute attacks. Although this might reflect continued emotional stress, myocardial inflammation and accentuated brain-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) release persist for at least 3 months. We therefore tested the hypotheses that this continued inflammation is associated with (1) persistent contractile dysfunction and (2) consequent impairment of quality of life. Echocardiographic parameters (global longitudinal strain [GLS], longitudinal strain rate [LSR], and peak apical twist [AT]) were compared acutely and after 3 months in 36 female patients with TTC and 19 age-matched female controls. Furthermore, correlations were sought between putative functional anomalies, inflammatory markers (T2 score on cardiovascular magnetic resonance, plasma NT-proBNP, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein levels), and the physical composite component of SF36 score (SF36-PCS). In TTC cases, left ventricular ejection fraction returned to normal within 3 months. GLS, LSR, and AT improved significantly over 3-month recovery, but GLS remained reduced compared to controls even at follow-up (-17.9 ± 3.1% vs -20.0 ± 1.8%, p = 0.003). Impaired GLS at 3 months was associated with both persistent NT-proBNP elevation (p = 0.03) and reduced SF36-PCS at ≄3 months (p = 0.04). In conclusion, despite normalization of left ventricular ejection fraction, GLS remains impaired for at least 3 months, possibly as a result of residual myocardial inflammation. Furthermore, perception of impaired physical exercise capacity ≄3 months after TTC may be explained by persistent myocardial dysfunction

    Coastal New England pilot study to determine fossil and biogenic formaldehyde source contributions using radiocarbon

The definitive version was published in Journal of Geophysical Research 115 (2010): D10301, doi:10.1029/2009JD012810.Compound specific radiocarbon analyses of atmospheric formaldehyde are reported as fraction modern (Fm) for a limited number of winter and summer air samples collected in coastal southern New England in 2007. The 11 of 13 samples with Fm 0.2 (max ∌ 0.35) were collected on days with strong northwesterly flow and the least urban impact. The Fm data were combined with VOC observations from the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, estimates of oxygenated VOC (OVOC), and back trajectories to interpret the relative contributions of biogenic and fossil carbon sources. It is argued that CH2O sources were dominated by pollutant VOCs and OVOCs from upwind coastal cities as opposed to more local biogenic VOCs at the times of sample collection.This research was supported by a graduate student internship program at WHOI National Ocean Sciences Accelerator Mass Spectrometry Facility (NSF OCE‐9807266) and by NASA project NNG04GB38G

    Using direct observations on multiple occasions to measure household food availability among low-income Mexicano residents in Texas colonias

    BACKGROUND: It has been recognized that the availability of foods in the home are important to nutritional health, and may influence the dietary behavior of children, adolescents, and adults. It is therefore important to understand food choices in the context of the household setting. Considering their importance, the measurement of household food resources becomes critical.Because most studies use a single point of data collection to determine the types of foods that are present in the home, which can miss the change in availability within a month and when resources are not available, the primary objective of this pilot study was to examine the feasibility and value of conducting weekly in-home assessments of household food resources over the course of one month among low-income Mexicano families in Texas colonias. METHODS: We conducted five in-home household food inventories over a thirty-day period in a small convenience sample; determined the frequency that food items were present in the participating households; and compared a one-time measurement with multiple measurements.After the development and pre-testing of the 252-item culturally and linguistically- appropriate household food inventory instrument that used direct observation to determine the presence and amount of food and beverage items in the home (refrigerator, freezer, pantry, elsewhere), two trained promotoras recruited a convenience sample of 6 households; administered a baseline questionnaire (personal info, shopping habits, and food security); conducted 5 in-home assessments (7-day interval) over a 30-day period; and documented grocery shopping and other food-related activities within the previous week of each in-home assessment. All data were collected in Spanish. Descriptive statistics were calculated for mean and frequency of sample characteristics, food-related activities, food security, and the presence of individual food items. Due to the small sample size of the pilot data, the Friedman Test and Kendall's W were used to assess the consistency of household food supplies across multiple observations. RESULTS: Complete data were collected from all 6 Mexicano women (33.2y +/- 3.3; 6.5 +/- 1.5 adults/children in household (HH); 5 HH received weekly income; and all were food insecure. All households purchased groceries within a week of at least four of the five assessments. The weekly presence and amounts of fresh and processed fruits and vegetables, dairy, meats, breads, cereals, beverages, and oils and fats varied. Further, the results revealed the inadequacy of a one-time measurement of household food resources, compared with multiple measures. The first household food inventory as a one-time measure would have mistakenly identified at least one-half of the participant households without fresh fruit, canned vegetables, dairy, protein foods, grains, chips, and sugar-sweetened beverages. CONCLUSIONS: This study highlights the value of documenting weekly household food supplies, especially in households where income resources may be more volatile. Clearly, the data show that a single HFI may miss the changes in availability--presence and amount--that occur among low-income Mexicano households who face challenges that require frequent purchase of foods and beverages. Use of multiple household food inventories can inform the development and implementation of nutrition-related policies and culturally sensitive nutrition education programs
