    Smart antennas have emerged as one of the most promising directions in supporting maximum communication link throughput. In this paper, we have investigated the impact of smart antennas on a complex mobile network such as a railroad wireless communications system. The objective is to analyze the selection of a Direction-Of-Arrival (DOA) estimation algorithm which provides the maximum efficiency when deployed in our railroad testbeds for wireless vehicular communication. Our findings are discussed to provide an indepth understanding of how different algorithms should be selected to support efficient network operations

    Changing certain dietary cationic and anionic minerals: Impact on blood chemistry, milk fever and udder edema in buffaloes during winter

    This study was conducted to examine the influence of varying dietary cation anion difference (DCAD) on acid base status, mineral dynamics, occurrence of milk fever and udder edema in Nili Ravi buffaloes in a randomized complete block design. Four iso-nitrogenous and iso-caloric diets having -22, -11, +11 and +22 meq/100 g DM DCAD were formulated and designated as high anionic (HA), low anionic (LA), low cationic (LC) and high cationic (HC), respectively. These diets were randomly allotted to 20 Nili Ravi buffaloes which were in their last two months of pregnancy. A linear increase in nutrient intake was recorded with increase in the DCAD level. Buffaloes fed with HA diet had higher nutrient digestibility than those fed with HC diet. Increased blood pH and serum HCO3 were noticed in buffaloes fed with LC and HC diets. Serum (Na+ + K+) – (Cl- + S--) was higher in buffaloes fed with LC and HC diets than those fed with LA and HA diets. Serum calcium and chloride increased with decreased DCAD level while serum magnesium, phosphorus and sulphur remained unchanged. Urine pH was also higher in buffaloes fed with LC and HC diets than those fed with LA and HA diets. Sodium, K, Mg and P balance increased with increased DCAD while its reverse was true for Ca and Cl balance. The concentration of progesterone tended to decrease while estrogen increased before and after parturition. However, their concentrations were more pronounced in buffaloes fed with LA and HA diets than those fed with LC and HC diets. One buffalo from each group fed withLC and HC diets had milk fever. Not a single case of milk fever was observed in buffaloes fed with LA and HA diets. Udder edema and mastitis were either absent or less severe in buffaloes fed with LA or HA diets while the problem was sever in buffaloes fed with LC and MC diets. This study revealed that feeding HA and LA diets prepartum can be a useful nutritional tool to minimize or prevent the incidence of milk fever and controlling udder edema.Key words: Cationic anionic diets, acid base status, hypocalcemia

    A Study On Energy Efficient Multi-Tier Multi-Hop Wireless Sensor Networks For Freight-Train Monitoring

    The North American freight railroad industry is trying to leverage wireless sensor networks (WSN) onboard railcars for advanced monitoring and alerting. In railroad environments, freight train WSNs exhibit a linear chain-like topology of significant length. Thus, existing wireless technologies such as the IEEE 802.15.4 communication protocol, based on a star topology, are unable to provide reliable service. The end-to-end communication between nodes generally relies on individual nodes communicating with their respective neighbors to carry the information over multiple hops and deliver it to the preferred destination. The routing performance and reliability significantly degrades with increasing number of hops. We proposed a multitier multi-hop network which is designed to overcome these issues in large-scale multi-hop WSNs in railroad environments. This approach has significant advantages, such as more data bandwidth, higher reliability, and lower energy consumption. Our analytical results show that the proposed multi-tier communication approach spends energy more efficiently and utilizes less resource than the traditional chain topology on board freight trains

    Inter-vehicle and roadside-to-vehicle communications can contribute to a safer and more efficient driving experience by providing time-sensitive and location-aware information. However, its performance suffers from vehicle mobility, intermittent user connectivity, and wireless channel unreliability. In this paper, we propose a novel cross-layer optimization approach based on our Adaptive Distributed Cooperative Medium Access Control (ADC-MAC) protocol to guarantee the quality-of-service (QoS) of real-time applications. Markov chain based theoretical analysis show that our proposed priority preemption approach can improve the quality of a real-time application by guaranteeing its bandwidth and reducing its transmission latency

Background: Transfusion related acute lung injury (TRALI) is a potentially fatal Acute Lung Injury following transfusion of blood components. Hypotheses implicate donor-derived anti-human leukocyte antigen or granulocyte antibodies reacting with recipients ' leukocytes, releasing inflammatory mediators. Lack of agreement on underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms renders improving transfusion safety difficult and expensive. Case Presentation: Literature search has not revealed any case of TRALI from Pakistan. We report the case of fatal TRALI in a 68 year old male who received blood products after coronary artery by-pass surgery. Conclusion: This article aims to create awareness about this complication and suggests that post transfusion cardiopulmonary instability should alert to the possibility of TRALI.     A multilevel paradigm for deep convolutional neural network features selection with an application to human gait recognition

    Human gait recognition (HGR) shows high importance in the area of video surveillance due to remote access and security threats. HGR is a technique commonly used for the identification of human style in daily life. However, many typical situations like change of clothes condition and variation in view angles degrade the system performance. Lately, different machine learning (ML) techniques have been introduced for video surveillance which gives promising results among which deep learning (DL) shows best performance in complex scenarios. In this article, an integrated framework is proposed for HGR using deep neural network and fuzzy entropy controlled skewness (FEcS) approach. The proposed technique works in two phases: In the first phase, deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) features are extracted by pre-trained CNN models (VGG19 and AlexNet) and their information is mixed by parallel fusion approach. In the second phase, entropy and skewness vectors are calculated from fused feature vector (FV) to select best subsets of features by suggested FEcS approach. The best subsets of picked features are finally fed to multiple classifiers and finest one is chosen on the basis of accuracy value. The experiments were carried out on four well-known datasets, namely, AVAMVG gait, CASIA A, B and C. The achieved accuracy of each dataset was 99.8, 99.7, 93.3 and 92.2%, respectively. Therefore, the obtained overall recognition results lead to conclude that the proposed system is very promising

    [89Zr]Oxinate4 for long-term in vivo cell tracking by positron emission tomography

    Purpose 111In (typically as [111In]oxinate3) is a gold standard radiolabel for cell tracking in humans by scintigraphy. A long half-life positron-emitting radiolabel to serve the same purpose using positron emission tomography (PET) has long been sought. We aimed to develop an 89Zr PET tracer for cell labelling and compare it with [111In]oxinate3 single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). Methods [89Zr]Oxinate4 was synthesised and its uptake and efflux were measured in vitro in three cell lines and in human leukocytes. The in vivo biodistribution of eGFP-5T33 murine myeloma cells labelled using [89Zr]oxinate4 or [111In]oxinate3 was monitored for up to 14 days. 89Zr retention by living radiolabelled eGFP-positive cells in vivo was monitored by FACS sorting of liver, spleen and bone marrow cells followed by gamma counting. Results Zr labelling was effective in all cell types with yields comparable with 111In labelling. Retention of 89Zr in cells in vitro after 24 h was significantly better (range 71 to >90 %) than 111In (43–52 %). eGFP-5T33 cells in vivo showed the same early biodistribution whether labelled with 111In or 89Zr (initial pulmonary accumulation followed by migration to liver, spleen and bone marrow), but later translocation of radioactivity to kidneys was much greater for 111In. In liver, spleen and bone marrow at least 92 % of 89Zr remained associated with eGFP-positive cells after 7 days in vivo. Conclusion [89Zr]Oxinate4 offers a potential solution to the emerging need for a long half-life PET tracer for cell tracking in vivo and deserves further evaluation of its effects on survival and behaviour of different cell types

    Mitochondrial clearance by the STK38 kinase supports oncogenic Ras-induced cell transformation.

    Oncogenic Ras signalling occurs frequently in many human cancers. However, no effective targeted therapies are currently available to treat patients suffering from Ras-driven tumours. Therefore, it is imperative to identify downstream effectors of Ras signalling that potentially represent promising new therapeutic options. Particularly, considering that autophagy inhibition can impair the survival of Ras-transformed cells in tissue culture and mouse models, an understanding of factors regulating the balance between autophagy and apoptosis in Ras-transformed human cells is needed. Here, we report critical roles of the STK38 protein kinase in oncogenic Ras transformation. STK38 knockdown impaired anoikis resistance, anchorage-independent soft agar growth, and in vivo xenograft growth of Ras-transformed human cells. Mechanistically, STK38 supports Ras-driven transformation through promoting detachment-induced autophagy. Even more importantly, upon cell detachment STK38 is required to sustain the removal of damaged mitochondria by mitophagy, a selective autophagic process, to prevent excessive mitochondrial reactive oxygen species production that can negatively affect cancer cell survival. Significantly, knockdown of PINK1 or Parkin, two positive regulators of mitophagy, also impaired anoikis resistance and anchorage-independent growth of Ras-transformed human cells, while knockdown of USP30, a negative regulator of PINK1/Parkin-mediated mitophagy, restored anchorage-independent growth of STK38-depleted Ras-transformed human cells. Therefore, our findings collectively reveal novel molecular players that determine whether Ras-transformed human cells die or survive upon cell detachment, which potentially could be exploited for the development of novel strategies to target Ras-transformed cells

    The asymmetric unit of the title compound, (C13H17N2O)2[ZnCl4]·2H2O, contains two tetra­hydro­harmine cations, one tetra­chloro­zincate(II) anion and two water mol­ecules. In the cations, the two 1H-indole ring systems are essentially planar, with maximum deviations of 0.016 (2) and 0.018 (2) Å, and both tetra­hydro­pyridinium rings show a half-chair conformation. The ZnII complex anion has a distorted tetra­hedral geometry. In the crystal, inter­molecular N—H⋯O, N—H⋯Cl, O—H⋯O, O—H⋯Cl and C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds link the components into a three-dimensional network. A π–π inter­action with a centroid–centroid distance of 3.542 (14) Å is also observed
