Serum antibodies in first-degree relatives of patients with IBD: A marker of disease susceptibility? A follow-up pilot-study after 7 years
Introduction: Various disease-specific serum antibodies were described in patients with inflammatory bowel disease and their yet healthy first-degree relatives. In the latter, serum antibodies are commonly regarded as potential markers of disease susceptibility. The present long-term follow-up study evaluated the fate of antibody-positive first-degree relatives. Patients and Methods: 25 patients with Crohn's disease, 19 patients with ulcerative colitis and 102 first-degree relatives in whom presence of ASCA, pANCA, pancreatic- and goblet-cell antibodies had been assessed were enrolled. The number of incident cases with inflammatory bowel disease was compared between antibody-positive and antibody-negative first-degree relatives 7 years after storage of serum samples. Results: 34 of 102 (33%) first-degree relatives were positive for at least one of the studied serum antibodies. In the group of first-degree relatives, one case of Crohn's disease and one case of ulcerative colitis were diagnosed during the follow-up period. However, both relatives did not display any of the investigated serum antibodies (p = 1). Discussion: The findings of our pilot study argue against a role of serum antibodies as a marker of disease susceptibility in first-degree relatives of patients with inflammatory bowel disease. However, these data have to await confirmation in larger ideally prospective multicenter studies before definite conclusions can be drawn
Bifidobacterium breve with α-Linolenic Acid and Linoleic Acid Alters Fatty Acid Metabolism in the Maternal Separation Model of Irritable Bowel Syndrome
peer-reviewedThe aim of this study was to compare the impact of dietary supplementation with a Bifidobacterium breve strain together with linoleic acid & α-linolenic acid, for 7 weeks, on colonic sensitivity and fatty acid metabolism in rats. Maternally separated and non-maternally separated Sprague Dawley rats (n = 15) were orally gavaged with either B. breve DPC6330 (109 microorganisms/day) alone or in combination with 0.5% (w/w) linoleic acid & 0.5% (w/w) α-linolenic acid, daily for 7 weeks and compared with trehalose and bovine serum albumin. Tissue fatty acid composition was assessed by gas-liquid chromatography and visceral hypersensitivity was assessed by colorectal distension. Significant differences in the fatty acid profiles of the non-separated controls and maternally separated controls were observed for α-linolenic acid and arachidonic acid in the liver, oleic acid and eicosenoic acid (c11) in adipose tissue, and for palmitoleic acid and docosahexaenoic acid in serum (p<0.05). Administration of B. breve DPC6330 to MS rats significantly increased palmitoleic acid, arachidonic acid and docosahexaenoic acid in the liver, eicosenoic acid (c11) in adipose tissue and palmitoleic acid in the prefrontal cortex (p<0.05), whereas feeding B. breve DPC6330 to non separated rats significantly increased eicosapentaenoic acid and docosapentaenoic acid in serum (p<0.05) compared with the NS un-supplemented controls. Administration of B. breve DPC6330 in combination with linoleic acid and α-linolenic acid to maternally separated rats significantly increased docosapentaenoic acid in the serum (p<0.01) and α-linolenic acid in adipose tissue (p<0.001), whereas feeding B. breve DPC6330 with fatty acid supplementation to non-separated rats significantly increased liver and serum docosapentaenoic acid (p<0.05), and α-linolenic acid in adipose tissue (p<0.001). B. breve DPC6330 influenced host fatty acid metabolism. Administration of B. breve DPC6330 to maternally separated rats significantly modified the palmitoleic acid, arachidonic acid and docosahexaenoic acid contents in tissues. Quark mass dependence of hadron masses from lattice QCD
We discuss lattice methods to obtain the derivatives of a lattice meson mass
with respect to the bare sea and valence quark masses. Applications are made to
quenched and dynamical fermion configurations. We find evidence for significant
differences between quenched and dynamical fermion configurations. We discuss
how to relate dependence on the bare lattice parameters to more

Competence Checking for the Global E-Service Society Using Games
We study the problem of checking the competence of communicative agents operating in a global society in order to receive and offer electronic services. Such a society will be composed of local sub-societies that will often be semi-open, viz., entrance of agents in a semi-open society is conditional to specific admission criteria. Assuming that a candidate agent provides an abstract description of their communicative skills, we present a test that a controller agent could perform in order to decide if a candidate agent should be admitted. We formulate this test by revisiting an existing knowledge representation framework based on games specified as extended logic programs. The resulting framework finds useful application in complex and inter-operable web-services construed as semi-open societies in support of the global vision known as the Semantic Web

Ruminant Agriculture: A Tool for Climate Change Mitigation
The quest to address and mitigate climate change has been dubbed a âwicked problemâ as it involves many interconnected processes requiring a multifaceted, comprehensive approach. Animal agriculture contributes roughly 15% to CO2 equivalent (CO2e) emissions; as a result, a concerted effort is being made to develop and promote more climate-friendly production practices. These practices include species diversification in grasslands, improving grazing rotation, adding nitrogen amendments, and the use of feed additives to reduce enteric fermentation. Successful inter-seeding of legumes and deep-rooted native grasses increases soil organic carbon (SOC) pools in many systems by increasing the biological carbon inputs to the rhizosphere. Rotational grazing increases the concentration of ruminant waste in smaller areas resulting in a more uniform application of nutrients and forage use. The rotational grazed pasture allows for longer pasture recovery, thereby increasing SOC stocks indirectly through increased root and aboveground biomass growth. Fertilization of pasturelands with nitrogen-only fertilizers increases SOC stocks. Enteric methane emission makes up over 44% of animal agricultureâs carbon footprint (Tubiello et al. 2013) and can be reduced using novel feed additives to mixed rations for confined cattle consumption. Itâs important to consider that none of these management practices is a silver bullet that works in any situation; instead, these can be effective tools to draw down carbon emissions. Many barriers, particularly financial ones, have kept land managers from implementing these climate-improving practices. To help growers address these barriers to adoption Agoro Carbonâą Alliance is implementing carbon offset projects, which provide both financial incentives and education that facilitate the adoption of multiple, improved agricultural management practices involving animal agriculture
Molecular transport and flow past hard and soft surfaces: Computer simulation of model systems
The properties of polymer liquids on hard and soft substrates are
investigated by molecular dynamics simulation of a coarse-grained bead-spring
model and dynamic single-chain-in-mean-field (SCMF) simulations of a soft,
coarse-grained polymer model. Hard, corrugated substrates are modelled by an
FCC Lennard-Jones solid while polymer brushes are investigated as a
prototypical example of a soft, deformable surface. From the molecular
simulation we extract the coarse-grained parameters that characterise the
equilibrium and flow properties of the liquid in contact with the substrate:
the surface and interface tensions, and the parameters of the hydrodynamic
boundary condition. The so-determined parameters enter a continuum description
like the Stokes equation or the lubrication approximation.Comment: 41 pages, 13 figure
