    Get PDF
The main purpose of the paper is to empirically examine the aviation-led growth hypothesis for the Czech Republic by testing causality between aviation and economic growth. We resort to econometric tests such as unit root tests and test of cointegration purposed by Johansen (1988). Fully Modified OLS, Dynamic OLS and Conical Cointegration Regression are used to estimate the cointegration equation for time span of 42 years from 1970 to 2012. Empirical results reveal the existence of cointegration between aviation demand and economic growth. Graphic methods such as Cholesky impulse response function (both accumulated and non-accumulated) and variance decomposition have also been applied to render the analysis rigorous. The positive contribution of aviation demand to economic growth is similar in all three estimation techniques of cointegration equation. Finally, Granger causality test is also applied to find the direction of causal relationship. Findings help in lime-lighting the importance of aviation industry in economic growth for a developing country like the Czech Republic

The utilization of natural antimicrobial substances has been increased in the pharmaceutical sector due to their stability and inhibition activity against pathogenic microorganisms. In the current study, the bacteriocin synthesis by locally isolated Lactobacillus plantarum MS from yogurt, has been optimized by using response surface methodology. Statistical optimization of physical variables by using Box-Behnken design, 3200 AU/mL bacteriocin activity was detected at 30 °C temperature, 18h incubation time and pH 6 against Staphylococcus aureus. The resulting bacteriocin was found to be stable a broad range of pH (2-12) and temperature (37-100 °C) but the activity of bacteriocin was slightly disturbed at 121 °C. Besides, bacteriocin showed stability after treatment with various enzymes (catalase, amylase, and lipase), salt (NaCl), and surfactants (triton X-100, EDTA, and SDS) but found sensitive by treating with proteolytic enzymes (proteinase K and trypsin) in comparison with untreated bacteriocin. Because of such biochemical characteristics, these antibacterial peptides could be possibly incorporated in the field of pharmacy to fulfil consumer’s demand for natural remedies

Sher Khan folded his jai namaz mat presented years ago by his mentor Hanif Rajput and got ready for his daily chores. He is a driver of one of the many catering vans possessed by Hanif Rajput Caterers. Putting on his jacket with HR block printed on its back he got behind the wheels and headed towards the kitchens to load the cuisine and head for the KMC Gardens where it had to be delivered for the wedding party of one of the clients. He rolled out with many other vans from the kitchen located in KMC sport complex at 7 PM. The traffic was heavy tonight however he managed to reach the DHA Gardens at 8.30 PM. He offloaded the “dhegs”; Mohammad Khan an old crony of his meticulously checked the contents with the Tally Card and signed the receipt. Meanwhile Sher Khan looked at the Gardens, which were cloaked with shamianas and blazing with fancy lights. It was too early for guests but there seemed a lot of hustle and bustle in the vicinity. The stage decorators were in their last phase plugging in the orchids and roses around the podium, waiters were putting the spirit lamps under the dishes and carpets were being swept. He thought of the day when his daughter got a similar wedding treat from the company five years ago, which was funded by Hanif sahib!Mohammad Khan refocused his attention by delivering the receipt, which he pocketed and looked up his next call station. He had to go to KMC Gardens and pick up the shamianas and chairs of last evening’s function and offload them at a business tycoon’s residence in Bath Island. By the time all his chores were over it was well past 2AM and Sher Khan parked his van and took the M17 coach and headed for his home in Balouch Colony

A Commentary on Telerehabilitation Services in Pakistan: Current Trends and Future Possibilities

    Get PDF
A 2014 World Health Organization (WHO) study reported that almost 27 million people with disability live in Pakistan with fewer than one allied rehabilitation professional per 10,000 people. The current study sought to determine the attitudes toward telerehabilitation via a survey administered to 329 Pakistani rehabilitation professionals. Study results indicate that rehabilitation professionals in Pakistan are knowledgeable about telerehabilitation and Information and Communication Technology (ICT), and are receptive to employing telerehabilitation programs and applications. Therefore, we can infer that the future of telerehabilitation can be bright in Pakistan but requires the attention of policy makers and non-government organizations to launch an appropriate program nationwide. The authors suggest that a range of telerehabilitation services (e.g., consultation, assessment, and therapy) could alleviate the shortage of rehabilitation personnel in Pakistan

    Get PDF
Purpose: To assess the antioxidant and hepatoprotective activity of the aqueous-methanol extract of Cichorium intybus seeds (C. intybus) against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced liver toxicity in albino Wistar rats.Method: The seed extract of C. intybus was prepared in aqueous methanol (20:80) via Soxhlet solvent extraction process. CCl4 (0.8 mL/kg) was administered to induce hepatic damage in Wistar rats. The seed extract (100, 250 and 500 mg/kg doses) and a 25 mg/kg dose of silymarin (as standard drug) were administered orally to separate groups of albino Wistar rats for 14 days. Blood samples from the rats were analyzed for biochemical markers for hepatic injury. The tissue samples of the rats were subjected to histopathological studies as well as analyzed for liver antioxidants. Results: The results for biochemical markers revealed that the rats treated with the extract (500 mg/kg dose) showed a maximum elevation of catalase (48.90 ÎĽmole of H2O2 consumed/min/mg protein), glutothione peroxidase (22.1 mg GSH consumed/min/mg protein), superoxide dismutase (14.2 units/min/mg protein), and a reduction in glutathione (18.1 ÎĽmole of GSH/mg protein). Serum biochemical parameters including serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (SGOT), serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase (SGPT), alkaline phosphate (ALKP), and direct bilirubin were significantly (p < 0.01) increased in the treated groups. Oral administration of different doses of C. intybus seed extract significantly (p < 0.01) protected the hepatic cells from impairment. The biochemical markers and hematological parameters were also normal in extract-treated rats in contrast to the standard (silymarin) and control groups. Conclusion: The results show that C. intybus plant is potential a good natural source of natural hepatoprotective and antioxidants agents. Keywords: Cichorium intybus, Antioxidant, Hepatoprotective Biomarkers, Silymarin, Hematological parameter
