The objective of paper was to determine the fracture toughness of friction stir welding (FSW) joints of EN AW-2014 AlCu4SiMg) aluminium alloy, and to compare the fracture toughness of FSW with that of conventional metal inert gas (MIG) process. FSW of aluminium alloy was performed on a conventional semiautomatic milling machine. Defect free FSW welds were produced on alloy plates at constant tool rotation and traverse speed of 1600 rpm and 200 mm/min, respectively. The results of Vickers hardness and Charpy impact tests were used to evaluate the fracture toughness of welded joints. Low heat input, absence of melting and filler metal resulted in better fracture toughness for FSW joints

The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of a platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) membrane, which is considered to be a new alternative surgical method in the treatment of vision-threatening corneal ulcers in dogs. Fourteen dogs (17 eyes) of various breeds and ages with deep corneal ulcers were treated surgically with a PRF membrane transplantation. The corneal ulcer of all the patients was closed with an autologous platelet-rich fibrin membrane. In the first 10 days after the operation, it was observed that the fibrin membrane partially melted, and corneal epithelialization and granulation tissue occurred in and around the ulcer area due to the graft material. Pain was significantly relieved, and conjunctival inflammation was noticeably improved. From the 20th day after the surgery, the granulation tissue was gradually cleaned. It was determined that all the eyes had vision. The most common complications after surgery were corneal pigmentation and fibrosis of varying severity. The use of autologous fibrin membranes is a safe and effective surgical alternative for the closure and healing of corneal ulcers. Our findings show that the autologous platelet-rich fibrin membrane is useful and effective in treating canine corneal deep ulcers.Čirevi rožnice mogu oštetiti vid u pasa.

The present study investigates the aroma, key odorants and sensory profile of extra virgin olive oils from five well-known Turkish cultivars. The aromatic extract obtained by the purge and trap extraction system, according to a sensory analysis, resembled the odor of olive oil. A total of 22, 21, 18, 22 and 21 aroma-active compounds were detected in the extracts of Ayvalık, Memecik, Gemlik, Sarı Ulak and Beylik olive oils, respectively. The results show that Ayvalık has the highest flavor dilution (FD) value of 1024 with hexanal, (E)-2-hexenal and α-farnesene. Memecik has the highest FD value at 2048 with (E)-2-hexenal. Gemlik has the highest FD value of 1024 with (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate, (E)-2-hexen-1-ol and α-farnesene. Sarı Ulak has the highest FD value at 2048 with (E)-2-hexenal. Beylik has the highest FD value of 2048 with (E)-2-hexenal and hexanal. All cultivars represent the characteristic green, cut-grass, fruity odor notes

Measuring myocardial extracellular volume of the right ventricle in patients with congenital heart disease

    Get PDF
The right ventricle ' s (RV) characteristics-thin walls and trabeculation-make it challenging to evaluate extracellular volume (ECV). We aimed to assess the feasibility of RV ECV measurements in congenital heart disease (CHD), and to introduce a novel ECV analysis tool. Patients (n=39) and healthy controls (n=17) underwent cardiovascular magnetic resonance T1 mapping in midventricular short axis (SAX) and transverse orientation (TRANS). Regions of interest (ROIs) were evaluated with regard to image quality and maximum RV wall thickness per ROI in pixels. ECV from plane ROIs was compared with values obtained with a custom-made tool that derives the mean T1 values from a "line of interest" (LOI) centered in the RV wall. In CHD, average image quality was good (no artifacts in the RV, good contrast between blood/myocardium), and RV wall thickness was 1-2 pixels. RV ECV was not quantifiable in 4/39 patients due to insufficient contrast or wall thickness= 1 pixel. T1 maps in SAX are recommended for RV ECV analysis. LOI application simplifies RV ECV measurements

In vivo biometric evaluation of Schlemm's canal with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography in pseuduexfoliation glaucoma

    Get PDF
Purpose: To perform in vivo imaging of the Schlemm's canal (SC) with anterior segment spectral-domain optical coherence tomography [AS-spectral-domain (SD)-OCT] and also to measure its biometric parameters including the SC length and SC area in patients with pseudoexfoliation (PEX) glaucoma. Methods: Forty-one consecutive patients with PEX glaucoma and 41 age- and sex-matched normal subjects were enrolled. All subjects underwent imaging with SD-OCT. The SC length and SC area were examined in the temporal sections and measured with customized software. Results: The percentages of the temporal sections in which SC was observable were similar between the two groups. Mean SC length was found significantly shorter, and mean SC area was found significantly smaller in patients with PEX glaucoma than in controls (p = 0.044 and p = 0.036, respectively). Mean intra-ocular pressure (IOP) values were also similar between two groups. No significant correlations were found between SC measurements and IOP. Conclusions: Anterior segment spectral-domain optical coherence tomography offers non-invasive, in vivo measurement of the SC, and it could be used for investigating the SC changes in patients with PEX glaucoma. © 2016 Acta Ophthalmologica Scandinavica Foundation. An early warning method for agricultural products price spike based on artificial neural networks prediction

    Get PDF
In general, the agricultural producing sector is affected by the diversity in supply, mostly from small companies, in addition to the rigidity of the demand, the territorial dispersion, the seasonality or the generation of employment related to the rural environment. These characteristics differentiate the agricultural sector from other economic sectors. On the other hand, the volatility of prices payed by producers, the high cost of raw materials, and the instability of both domestic and international markets are factors which have eroded the competitiveness and profitability of the agricultural sector. Because of the advance in technology, applications have been developed based on Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) which have helped the development of sales forecast on consumer products, improving the accuracy of traditional forecasting systems. This research uses the RNA to develop an early warning system for facing the increase in agricultural products, considering macro and micro economic variables and factors related to the seasons of the year

Effects of hospital facilities on patient outcomes after cancer surgery: an international, prospective, observational study

    Get PDF
Background Early death after cancer surgery is higher in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) compared with in high-income countries, yet the impact of facility characteristics on early postoperative outcomes is unknown. The aim of this study was to examine the association between hospital infrastructure, resource availability, and processes on early outcomes after cancer surgery worldwide. Methods A multimethods analysis was performed as part of the GlobalSurg 3 study-a multicentre, international, prospective cohort study of patients who had surgery for breast, colorectal, or gastric cancer. The primary outcomes were 30-day mortality and 30-day major complication rates. Potentially beneficial hospital facilities were identified by variable selection to select those associated with 30-day mortality. Adjusted outcomes were determined using generalised estimating equations to account for patient characteristics and country-income group, with population stratification by hospital.Findings Between April 1, 2018, and April 23, 2019, facility-level data were collected for 9685 patients across 238 hospitals in 66 countries (91 hospitals in 20 high-income countries; 57 hospitals in 19 upper-middle-income countries; and 90 hospitals in 27 low-income to lower-middle-income countries). The availability of five hospital facilities was inversely associated with mortality: ultrasound, CT scanner, critical care unit, opioid analgesia, and oncologist. After adjustment for case-mix and country income group, hospitals with three or fewer of these facilities (62 hospitals, 1294 patients) had higher mortality compared with those with four or five (adjusted odds ratio [OR] 3.85 [95% CI 2.58-5.75]; p<0.0001), with excess mortality predominantly explained by a limited capacity to rescue following the development of major complications (63.0% vs 82.7%; OR 0.35 [0.23-0.53]; p<0.0001). Across LMICs, improvements in hospital facilities would prevent one to three deaths for every 100 patients undergoing surgery for cancer.Interpretation Hospitals with higher levels of infrastructure and resources have better outcomes after cancer surgery, independent of country income. Without urgent strengthening of hospital infrastructure and resources, the reductions in cancer-associated mortality associated with improved access will not be realised
