The origin of mid-infrared emission in massive young stellar objects: multi-baseline VLTI observations of W33A
The circumstellar structure on 100 AU scales of the massive young stellar
object W33A is probed using the VLTI and the MIDI instrument. N-band
visibilities on 4 baselines are presented which are inconsistent with a
spherically symmetric geometry. The visibility spectra and SED are
simultaneously compared to 2D axi-symmetric dust radiative transfer models with
a geometry including a rotationally flattened envelope and outflow cavities. We
assume an O7.5 ZAMS star as the central source, consistent with the observed
bolometric luminosity. The observations are also compared to models with and
without (dusty and gaseous) accretion disks. A satisfactory model is
constructed which reproduces the visibility spectra for each (u,v) point. It
fits the silicate absorption, the mid-IR slope, the far-infrared peak, and the
(sub)mm of the SED. It produces a 350 micron morphology consistent with
observations. The 10 micron emission on 100 AU scales is dominated by the
irradiated walls of the cavity sculpted by the outflow. The visibilities rule
out the presence of dust disks with total (gas and dust) masses more than 0.01
Msun. However, optically thick accretion disks, interior to the dust
sublimation radius, are allowed to accrete at rates equalling the envelope's
mass infall rate (up to 10^(-3) Msun/yr) without substantially affecting the
visibilities due to the extinction by the extremely massive envelope of W33A.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&
Precursors of fatty alcohols in the ISM: Discovery of n-propanol
Theories on the origins of life propose that early cell membranes were
synthesized from amphiphilic molecules simpler than phospholipids such as fatty
alcohols. The discovery in the interstellar medium (ISM) of ethanolamine, the
simplest phospholipid head group, raises the question whether simple
amphiphilic molecules are also synthesized in space. We investigate whether
precursors of fatty alcohols are present in the ISM. For this, we have carried
out a spectral survey at 7, 3, 2 and 1 mm toward the Giant Molecular Cloud
G+0.693-0.027 located in the Galactic Center using the IRAM 30m and Yebes 40m
telescopes. Here, we report the detection in the ISM of the primary alcohol
n-propanol (in both conformers Ga-n-C3H7OH and Aa-n-C3H7OH), a precursor of
fatty alcohols. The derived column densities of n-propanol are (5.5+-0.4)x10^13
cm^-2 for the Ga conformer and (3.4+-0.3)x10^13 cm^-2 for the Aa conformer,
which imply molecular abundances of (4.1+-0.3)x10^-10 for Ga-n-C3H7OH and of
(2.5+-0.2)x10^-10 for Aa-n-C3H7OH. We also searched for the AGa conformer of
n-butanol (AGa-n-C4H9OH) without success yielding an upper limit to its
abundance of <4.1x10^-11. The inferred CH3OH:C2H5OH:C3H7OH:C4H9OH abundance
ratios go as 1:0.04:0.006:<0.0004 toward G+0.693-0.027, i.e. they decrease
roughly by one order of magnitude for increasing complexity. We also report the
detection of both syn and anti conformers of vinyl alcohol, with column
densities of (1.11+-0.08)x10^14 cm^-2 and (1.3+-0.4)x10^13 cm^-2, and
abundances of (8.2+-0.6)x10^-10 and (9.6+-3.0)x10^-11, respectively. The
detection of n-propanol, together with the recent discovery of ethanolamine in
the ISM, opens the possibility that precursors of lipids according to theories

Activated PI3Kδ syndrome, an immunodeficiency disorder, leads to sensorimotor deficits recapitulated in a murine model.
The phosphoinositide-3-kinase (PI3K) family plays a major role in cell signaling and is predominant in leukocytes. Gain-of-function (GOF) mutations in the PIK3CD gene lead to the development of activated PI3Kδ syndrome (APDS), a rare primary immunodeficiency disorder. A subset of APDS patients also displays neurodevelopmental delay symptoms, suggesting a potential role of PIK3CD in cognitive and behavioural function. However, the extent and nature of the neurodevelopmental deficits has not been previously quantified. Here, we assessed the cognitive functions of two APDS patients, and investigated the causal role of the PIK3CD GOF mutation in neurological deficits using a murine model of this disease. We used p110δE1020K knock-in mice, harbouring the most common APDS mutation in patients. We found that APDS patients present with visuomotor deficits, exacerbated by autism spectrum disorder comorbidity, whereas p110δE1020K mice exhibited impairments in motor behaviour, learning and repetitive behaviour patterning. Our data indicate that PIK3CD GOF mutations increase the risk for neurodevelopmental deficits, supporting previous findings on the interplay between the nervous and the immune system. Further, our results validate the knock-in mouse model, and offer an objective assessment tool for patients that could be incorporated in diagnosis and in the evaluation of treatments
White Paper 2: Origins, (Co)Evolution, Diversity & Synthesis Of Life
Publicado en Madrid, 185 p. ; 17 cm.How life appeared on Earth and how then it diversified into the different and currently existing forms of life are the unanswered questions that will be discussed this volume. These questions delve into the deep past of our planet, where biology intermingles with geology and chemistry, to explore the origin of life and understand its evolution, since “nothing makes sense in biology except in the light of evolution” (Dobzhansky, 1964). The eight challenges that compose this volume summarize our current knowledge and future research directions touching different aspects of the study of evolution, which can be considered a fundamental discipline of Life Science. The volume discusses recent theories on how the first molecules arouse, became organized and acquired their structure, enabling the first forms of life. It also attempts to explain how this life has changed over time, giving rise, from very similar molecular bases, to an immense biological diversity, and to understand what is the hylogenetic relationship among all the different life forms. The volume further analyzes human evolution, its relationship with the environment and its implications on human health and society. Closing the circle, the volume discusses the possibility of designing new biological machines, thus creating a cell prototype from its components and whether this knowledge can be applied to improve our ecosystem. With an effective coordination among its three main areas of knowledge, the CSIC can become an international benchmark for research in this field
An Overview of the 2014 ALMA Long Baseline Campaign
A major goal of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) is to
make accurate images with resolutions of tens of milliarcseconds, which at
submillimeter (submm) wavelengths requires baselines up to ~15 km. To develop
and test this capability, a Long Baseline Campaign (LBC) was carried out from
September to late November 2014, culminating in end-to-end observations,
calibrations, and imaging of selected Science Verification (SV) targets. This
paper presents an overview of the campaign and its main results, including an
investigation of the short-term coherence properties and systematic phase
errors over the long baselines at the ALMA site, a summary of the SV targets
and observations, and recommendations for science observing strategies at long
baselines. Deep ALMA images of the quasar 3C138 at 97 and 241 GHz are also
compared to VLA 43 GHz results, demonstrating an agreement at a level of a few
percent. As a result of the extensive program of LBC testing, the highly
successful SV imaging at long baselines achieved angular resolutions as fine as
19 mas at ~350 GHz. Observing with ALMA on baselines of up to 15 km is now

Mental impact of Covid-19 among Spanish healthcare workers. A large longitudinal survey
Aims: Longitudinal data on the mental health impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic in healthcare workers is limited. We estimated prevalence, incidence and persistence of probable mental disorders in a cohort of Spanish healthcare workers (Covid-19 waves 1 and 2) -and identified associated risk factors. Methods: 8996 healthcare workers evaluated on 5 May-7 September 2020 (baseline) were invited to a second web-based survey (October-December 2020). Major depressive disorder (PHQ-8 ≥ 10), generalised anxiety disorder (GAD-7 ≥ 10), panic attacks, post-traumatic stress disorder (PCL-5 ≥ 7), and alcohol use disorder (CAGE-AID ≥ 2) were assessed. Distal (pre-pandemic) and proximal (pandemic) risk factors were included. We estimated the incidence of probable mental disorders (among those without disorders at baseline) and persistence (among those with disorders at baseline). Logistic regression of individual-level [odds ratios (OR)] and population-level (population attributable risk proportions) associations were estimated, adjusting by all distal risk factors, health care centre and time of baseline interview. Results: 4809 healthcare workers participated at four months follow-up (cooperation rate = 65.7%; mean = 120 days s.d. = 22 days from baseline assessment). Follow-up prevalence of any disorder was 41.5%, (v. 45.4% at baseline, p < 0.001); incidence, 19.7% (s.e. = 1.6) and persistence, 67.7% (s.e. = 2.3). Proximal factors showing significant bivariate-adjusted associations with incidence included: work-related factors [prioritising Covid-19 patients (OR = 1.62)], stress factors [personal health-related stress (OR = 1.61)], interpersonal stress (OR = 1.53) and financial factors [significant income loss (OR = 1.37)]. Risk factors associated with persistence were largely similar. Conclusions: Our study indicates that the prevalence of probable mental disorders among Spanish healthcare workers during the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic was similarly high to that after the first wave. This was in good part due to the persistence of mental disorders detected at the baseline, but with a relevant incidence of about 1 in 5 of HCWs without mental disorders during the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. Health-related factors, work-related factors and interpersonal stress are important risks of persistence of mental disorders and of incidence of mental disorders. Adequately addressing these factors might have prevented a considerable amount of mental health impact of the pandemic among this vulnerable population. Addressing health-related stress, work-related factors and interpersonal stress might reduce the prevalence of these disorders substantially.
