We also acknowledge funding from FCT-MCTES through Filipa Lopes-Coelho PhD (PD/BD/128337/2017).Anti-angiogenic therapy is an old method to fight cancer that aims to abolish the nutrient and oxygen supply to the tumor cells through the decrease of the vascular network and the avoidance of new blood vessels formation. Most of the anti-angiogenic agents approved for cancer treatment rely on targeting vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) actions, as VEGF signaling is considered the main angiogenesis promotor. In addition to the control of angiogenesis, these drugs can potentiate immune therapy as VEGF also exhibits immunosuppressive functions. Despite the mechanistic rational that strongly supports the benefit of drugs to stop cancer progression, they revealed to be insufficient in most cases. We hypothesize that the rehabilitation of old drugs that interfere with mechanisms of angiogenesis related to tumor microenvironment might represent a promising strategy. In this review, we deepened research on the molecular mechanisms underlying anti-angiogenic strategies and their failure and went further into the alternative mechanisms that impact angiogenesis. We concluded that the combinatory targeting of alternative effectors of angiogenic pathways might be a putative solution for anti-angiogenic therapies.publishersversionpublishe

    Abstract — This paper proposes a novel approach to adapt the conventional Direct Power Control (DPC) for high power applications with a third order LCL filter. The strong resonance present in the LCL filter is damped with additional effort in the system control. The application of DPC to the control of threephase Voltage Source Inverter (VSI) connected to the grid through a LCL filter has not yet been considered. An active damping strategy for the LCL filter together with harmonic rejection control is proposed over the conventional DPC. The steady state as well as the dynamic performance of the proposed system is presented by means of the simulation results and compared with the conventional approach

The amino acid cysteine actively contributes to cancer metabolic remodelling on three different levels: first, in its free form, in redox control, as a component of the antioxidant glutathione or its involvement in protein s-cysteinylation, a reversible post-translational modification; second, as a substrate for the production of hydrogen sulphide (H2S), which feeds the mitochondrial electron transfer chain and mediates per-sulphidation of ATPase and glycolytic enzymes, thereby stimulating cellular bioenergetics; and, finally, as a carbon source for epigenetic regulation, biomass production and energy production. This review will provide a systematic portrayal of the role of cysteine in cancer biology as a source of carbon and sulphur atoms, the pivotal role of cysteine in different metabolic pathways and the importance of H2S as an energetic substrate and signalling molecule. The different pools of cysteine in the cell and within the body, and their putative use as prognostic cancer markers will be also addressed. Finally, we will discuss the pharmacological means and potential of targeting cysteine metabolism for the treatment of cancer.publishersversionpublishe

    Relative age effect on national selection process in triathlon

    El objetivo de este estudio fue analizar el efecto de la edad relativa (RAE) en el proceso de selección nacional de triatletas (n = 1321) durante las temporadas 2013-2015. La muestra fue divida por categorías y sexo. Cada una fue subdividida en 4 cuartiles según la fecha de nacimiento. Las diferencias fueron analizadas mediante la prueba no paramétrica Krustal-Wallis. Para la comparación múltiple se utilizó U de Mann Whitney. Los resultados mostraron que el rendimiento en las pruebas analizadas presentaba una mejor tendencia en aquellos deportistas nacidos en el primer cuartil del año para el sexo masculino. En esta línea, los atletas nacidos en la última parte mostraron un peor rendimiento general. Estos resultados fueron menos consistentes para el sexo femenino. Este trabajo ha puesto de manifiesto la influencia del RAE en los procesos de identificación de talentos y la estructura competitiva, sugiriendo su consideración en los procesos de selecciónThe aim of this study was to analyze the influence of relative age effect on the selection process in triathlon (n = 1321). The sample was divided by category and gender. Each category was allocated into four quartiles - based on date of birth according to the selection year. The Krustal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney test were used to analyze the intra-categorical and intra-gender differences. The results showed a better performance trend in those athletes that were born in the first quartile. In contrast, athletes that were born in the latter part of the year showed poorer overall performance and a lower score in the point scale. However, these results were less consistent for females.     Prevalence and social-cognitive determinants of the use of performance enhancing substances by Portuguese gymgoers

    Background: The use of performance-enhancing substances (PES) occurs among gym goers, which is seen as a public health concern. The aim of this study is to investigate the extent of PES use and the social-cognitive determinants whichinfluence the intention to use these substances among gym goers, according to the Theory of Planned Behaviour.Methods: A convenience sample of Portuguese gym goers (n = 453; 61,3% female; 38,7% male) completed an anonymous webbased survey about beliefs, attitudes, social influences and intentions towards use of PES as well as self-reported PESuse. A two-step approach to maximum likelihood, structural equation modelling, multigroup analysis and t-test with the Welch correction for heteroskedastic variances were performed using IBM SPSS/AMOS 24.0.Results: 11.01% of the participants reported PES use. At the structural level, results support attitudes (b = 0.21; p < 0.001), beliefs (b = 0.35, p< 0.001) and subjective norms in predicting intentions to PES use in gym goers with subjective norms (b = 0.50; p <0.001) being its strongest predictor. Moreover, results showed a significant association self-reported PES use and intentions to use (b = 0.66, pp < 0.001). The predictive model was invariant across gender; however, compared to males, females believed less in the performance enhancing effects of PES, were less prone to the influence of significant others and had weaker intentions to use these substances.Conclusion: Preventive interventions should focus on influencing subjective norms, alongside to beliefs and attitudes towards PES use as these variables influence the intention to use PES in this particular population

    Coronectomy - An alternative approach to remove impacted teeth in oncological patients

    Coronectomy involves the section of the tooth crown leaving the roots in the socket. Possibility of inferior alveolar nerve injury and mandibular fracture are the main indications for this approach. Herein, we describe a case series of coronectomy to highlight its indication in normal and oncological patients. A total of 9 patients were submitted to coronectomy, 6 of them were oncological. Three patients were evaluated before head and neck radiotherapy (HNRT), 2 after HNRT and 1 before bone marrow transplantation. Mean age of the patients was 49 years, most of them male (n=7). Lower third molars were the main teeth that received this procedure, and all cases presented intimate anatomic relationship between the roots and the mandibular canal. Moreover, three cases also presented evident mandibular fracture risk in removing the tooth. During the follow-up period, none complications were observed related to coronectomy and oncological treatment. Coronectomy is a safe approach including for cancer patients and it should be considered in high-risk impacted teeth extractions

    Metastatic Intraocular Tumor Due to Colorectal Adenocarcinoma: Case Report and Literature Review

    Purpose: To describe the clinical and histopathological findings of a case of intraocular metastasis due to colorectal adenocarcinoma and to carry out a literature review. Case Report: A 64-year-old man with a history of tumor resection due to infiltrating colorectal adenocarcinoma three years previously sought ophthalmological care because of severe ocular pain without response to medical treatment and progressive vision loss in the left eye. On ultrasonographic examination, there was a heterogeneous intraocular choroidal tumor, which occupied approximately 40% of the vitreous cavity, as well as peritumoral serous retinal detachment. The patient underwent left eyeball enucleation. The histopathological diagnosis was metastatic tubular adenocarcinoma involving the retina and choroid that partially infiltrated the sclera and the proximal optic nerve. Conclusion: The present case highlights a rare pathological entity associated with variable therapeutic schemes and survival times and poor prognosis in patients with metastatic intraocular tumors due to colorectal adenocarcinoma
