Control of Drosophila adult pattern by extradenticle

    Get PDF
The homeobox gene extradenticle (exd) acts as a cofactor of the homeotic genes in the specification of larval patterns during embryogenesis. To study its role in adult patterns, we have generated clones of mutant exd- cells and examined their effect on the different body parts. In some regions, exd- clones exhibit homeotic transformations similar to those produced by known homeotic mutations such as Ultrabithorax (Ubx), labial (lab), spineless-aristapedia (ssa) or Antennapedia (Antp). In other regions, the lack of exd causes novel homeotic transformations producing ectopic eyes and legs. Moreover, exd is also required for functions normally not associated with homeosis, such as the maintenance of the dorsoventral pattern, the specification of subpatterns in adult appendages or the arrangement of bristles in the mesonotum and genitalia. Our findings indicate that exd is critically involved in adult morphogenesis, not only in the homeotic function but also in several other developmental processes. This work was supported by grants from the Dirección General de Investigación Científica y Técnica and the Human Frontier Science Program Organization and an institutional grant from the Fundación Ramón ArecesPeer Reviewe

Using clustering methods to deal with high number of alternatives on Group Decision Making

    Get PDF
Novel Group Decision Making methods and Web 2.0 have augmented the quantity of data that experts have to discuss about. Nevertheless, experts are only capable of dealing with a reduced set of information. In this paper, a novel method for dealing with decision environments that include a large set of alternatives is presented. By the use of clustering methods, the available alternatives are combined into clusters according to their similarity. Afterwards, one Group Decision Making process is employed for choosing a cluster and another one for selecting the final alternative. The authors would like to thank the FEDER financial support for the Project TIN2016-75850-P by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities

A Sparse-Bayesian Approach for the Design of Robust Digital Predistorters Under Power-Varying Operation

    Get PDF
"Early access"In this article, a sparse-Bayesian treatment is proposed to solve the crucial questions posed by power amplifier (PA) and digital predistorter (DPD) modeling. To learn a model, the advanced Bayesian framework includes a group of specific processes that maximize the likelihood of the measured data: regressor pursuit and identification, coefficient estimation, stopping criterion, and regressor deselection. The relevance vector machine (RVM) method is reformulated theoretically to be implemented in complex-valued linear regression. In essence, given an initial set of candidate regressors, the result of this sparse-Bayesian learning approach is the most likely model. Experimental results are provided for the linearization of class AB and class J PAs driven by a 30-MHz fifth-generation new radio signal for a fixed average power, where the evolution of the figures of merit versus the number of active coefficients is examined for the proposed sparse-Bayesian pursuit (SBP) algorithm in comparison to other greedy algorithms. The SBP presents a good performance in terms of linearization capabilities and computational cost. Furthermore, the proposed Bayesian framework enabled the design of a DPD model structure, deselect regressors, and readjust coefficients in a direct learning architecture, demonstrating the robustness to changes in the power level over a 10-dB range.Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación 10.13039/501100011033Junta de Andalucía - Fondos FEDER US-126499

Impulsivity in fatal suicide behaviour: A systematic review and meta-analysis of psychological autopsy studies

    Get PDF
Our aim is to review and perform a meta-analysis on the role of impulsivity in fatal suicide behaviour. We included papers who used psychological autopsy methodology, assessed adult death by suicide, and included assessment of impulsivity. We excluded papers about assisted suicide, terrorist suicide, or other cause of death other than suicide or postmortem diagnosis made only from medical records or database. 97 articles were identified. 33 were included in the systematic review and nine in the meta-analysis. We found that people who die by suicide with high impulsivity are associated with younger age, substance abuse, and low intention to die, whereas those with low impulsivity were associated with older age, depression, schizophrenia, high intention to die and low social support. In the meta-analysis, suicide cases had higher impulsivity scores than living controls (Hedges' g = 0.59, 95 % CI [0.28, 0.89], p=.002). However, studies showed heterogeneity (Q = 90.86, p<.001, I2=89.0 %). Impulsivity-aggressiveness interaction was assessed through meta-regression (β=0.447, p=.045). Individuals with high impulsivity would be exposed to a higher risk of fatal suicide behaviour, aggressiveness would play a mediating role. People who die by suicide with high and low impulsivity display distinct characteristics, which may reflect different endophenotypes leading to suicide by different pathways

Purpose: The objective of this article is to know if there are differences in the variables that explain the entrepreneurial intention of the Physical Activity and Sport Science students addressing academic training and gender of them. Design/methodology: To know entrepreneurial intentions and the different variables related to entrepreneurship, a questionnaire previously validated was used. The questionnaire was provided to 578 students pre-graduated (1st-4th course) and post-graduate of Physical Activity and Sport Science degree of Valencia. Findings: Statistically significant differences (p ≤ 0.05) in the variables that predict entrepreneurial intention of Physical Activity and Sport Science students by gender and training were found. In both genders, the attitude towards entrepreneurship and the perceived behavior control were the predictors of entrepreneurial intentions and in men also the subjective norms. Our world has been transformed by the coronavirus and the infection it causes. The severity of the disease and the consequences of the state of alarm do not affect everyone equally, being people with intellectual and developmental disabilities one of the most vulnerable groups. INICO and Plena inclusion conducted a study to analyze the impact of COVID-19 and lockdown on people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, their families, direct support professionals, and disability organizations. To address this goal, four online surveys were developed and completed by almost 1.500 participants from all the Spanish regions. The results indicate that, despite the efforts made by the third sector, the health crisis has unveiled the deficiencies of our support system, which leads us to reflect on three fundamental aspects: the degree to which the development and maintenance of natural support networks is carried out when the person lives in a specific environment; the extent to which the support offered from the third sector reaches individuals outside the disability services network; and the role of our educational system in guaranteeing the right to education for people with special support needs.
