Is There Labor Market Discrimination among Professionals in Chile? Lawyers, Doctors and Businesspeople

This paper analyzes gender differences in three Chilean professional labor markets, Business, Law and Medicine, utilizing a new and rich data set collected for this purpose. The results show that differences in wages attributed to gender are only present in the legal profession. In Business/Economics, a vector of current family condition eliminates the gender effect and in Medicine, taking into account hours worked, size of firm and region also eliminates gender differences. The paper further shows that individuals’ perceived locus of control (internal or external) is relevant in explaining the distribution of earnings.

Discriminación en el mercado laboral por habilidades, educación escolar y género en Chile

En este trabajo se analiza el efecto de los niveles de escolaridad sobre las brechas de sexo en el mercado laboral chileno. Se emplea un nutrido conjunto de datos sobre los resultados del mercado laboral, el logro académico y el rendimiento académico, así como las variables que caracterizan los antecedentes familiares. Aunque los resultados muestran diferencias de sexo estadísticamente significativas en varias dimensiones del mercado laboral chileno, esas brechas dependen mayormente del nivel de escolaridad de los individuos. Esos hallazgos no se deben tomar como una prueba decisiva de discriminación en el mercado laboral chileno.

Determinants of Short- and Long-Term Commercial Lending Rates in Peru, 2010–2022

Short- and long-term interest rates are crucial for investment and, thus, business dynamism. The injection of money depends on the ability to promote cash flows through credit which boosts productive sectors. In the last decade, among Latin American countries, Peru has stood out for its key financial system and macroeconomic stability characteristics. The Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCRP) plays a key role in setting the reference rate given its autonomy and strong institutional trust. However, the mixed pension system injects liquidity into the financial system through its private contributions. For the purposes of this study, an autoregressive econometric model of distributed lags (ARDL) was employed. The findings reveal that the reference rate set by the BCRP establishes a long-term relationship for both short and long-term rates, empirically demonstrating the effectiveness of monetary policy. Additionally, the liquidity provided by the pension system triggers an immediate shock response in determining the short-term rate. It is also observed that the issuance of sovereign bonds is a robust tool in determining the long-term rate due to its facilitation of credit access. This research is relevant for identifying macroeconomic and financial variables and guiding the formulation of macroeconomic policies

Between Portland and Seattle. The civilized monster in Grimm and iZombie

Las ciudades contemporáneas se han convertido en un espacio recurrente en la ficción televisiva. Muchas de estas urbes representan escenarios de la realidad pero introducen seres fantásticos que desestabilizan los cimientos de la cotidianeidad, lo cual supone un inevitable enfrentamiento entre el discurso del logos y del mythos. Con el fin de comprender cómo se produce esta dialéctica entre la ciudad y los monstruos, el presente artículo analiza las series Grimm y iZombie, desarrolladas en Portland y Seattle respectivamente. Ambas ficciones muestran seres fantásticos de distinta índole; el primer ejemplo recupera monstruos de las fábulas germanas y el segundo explora los estragos de una infección zombi. Así pues, el objetivo del presente estudio es la realización de un análisis narrativo de los ambientes y los personajes, viendo en qué medida se condicionan mutuamente y si se modifica la percepción de las ciudades reales representadas.Contemporary cities have become a recurring space in television fiction. Many of these cities represent real-life scenes, but they introduce fantastic beings, which sometimes destabilize the foundations of everyday life, meaning an inevitable comparison between the discourses of logos and mythos. With the aim of understanding how this dialectical relationship between cities and monsters is produced, this paper analyses the TV shows Grimm and iZombie, which are set in Portland and Seattle respectively. Both fictions show different types of fantastic beings, thus the first example recovers German fable monsters, while the second case explores the ravages of a zombie infection. Therefore, the goal of this study is the completion of narrative analysis, focused on the settings and characters, analyzing how they interact and if the perception of the real cities represented is changed

Elaboración de programa experto en detección de fallas para área de suministros Viña San Pedro Castillo de Molina

115 p.La presente memoria consiste en la elaboración de un programa experto en la búsqueda de fallas,desarrollado en Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 basado en árboles de decisiones, con el objetivo de ayudar al mantenedor en la detección de fallas simples para la posterior reparación de los equipos con problemas. Este programa se desarrolla en la Viña San Pedro Castillo de Molina con la ayuda de un mecánico experto en el área de suministros de esta viña. Este experto, con el paso de los años, fue adquiriendo los procedimientos de detección de las fallas y su posterior reparación, además de guiar a los mecánicos novatos a realizar estas tareas, pero su tiempo no era ilimitado y se le requería para otras tareas dentro de la organización. La aplicación permite almacenar este conocimiento, editarlo y ponerlo al alcance del usuario, para diagnosticar las causas de fallas con su solución, para usarlo tanto en el mantenimiento como en el entrenamiento de personal nuevo o cuando la ocasión lo amerite.PALABRAS CLAVES: Sistema experto, mantenimiento, suministros./ABSTRACT: This thesis consists the elaboration of an expert program in search for failures, developed in Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 based on decision trees, with the aim to help the maintainer in detection the simple failures for subsequent repair of the equipments with problems. This program develops in the Viña San Pedro Castillo de Molina with the help of a mechanical expert in the area of supplies of this vineyard. This expert, with the passage of time, was acquiring procedures for the detection of failures and its later repair, in addition to guiding the Beginners mechanical to perform these tasks but his time was not unlimited and was required for other tasks inside the organization. The application allows to store this knowledge, edit it and put it within reach of the user, for diagnose the causes of faults with its solution, for use both in the maintenance and training of new staff or when of the occasion warrants it
